Secretly Married for 4 Years, He Regrets to Tears After the Divorce-Chapter 109: My Mom’s Not Home
Spencer Sawyer rang the doorbell a few times, but no one answered.
’Looks like Wren Sutton isn’t home.’
He took out his phone to call her, but before he could dial the number, a child’s sweet, innocent voice came from the intercom.
"Mister, who are you looking for?"
Spencer Sawyer froze. ’Who’s talking?’
He quickly realized the voice was coming from the intercom on Wren Sutton’s door.
That meant someone was home—and it was a child.
"Hello, little one. I’m looking for Wren Sutton. Is she home?"
Zoey: "My mommy isn’t home."
"!!!" The blood in Spencer Sawyer’s veins seemed to freeze. His breath hitched, and he was lost in a fog of stunned disbelief.
’Wren Sutton is a mother?! That means she’s married and has a new family.’
’No wonder she said on WeChat that it wouldn’t happen again and told me not to make her breakfast anymore. She didn’t want her husband to get the wrong idea.’
This sudden news struck him like a bolt from the blue, shattering the hope he had harbored deep in his heart.
The shock gave way to endless melancholy and disappointment.
After what felt like an eternity, Spencer Sawyer gathered his thoughts and reluctantly turned to leave.
「Ten minutes later.」
Wren Sutton stepped out of the elevator, her arms full of bags big and small.
She unlocked the door with her fingerprint and passcode. With a BEEP, the door opened.
"Zoey, Auntie’s back! I bought you lots of things."
Zoey came running over, ignoring the exquisitely wrapped gift boxes. She threw her arms around Wren Sutton and burst into quiet tears, which she couldn’t hold back.
"Mommy~~"
Hearing the little girl’s pitiful, aggrieved voice made Wren Sutton’s heart ache.
"Zoey, don’t cry. Auntie’s back. I’m not going out again today. I’ll stay home and keep you company."
Zoey held out her pinky, her voice small and soft. "Pinky promise."
Wren Sutton played along, linking her pinky with the little girl’s. They recited the words together.
"A promise is a promise."
"Of course."
Zoey’s tears finally turned to a smile, revealing her sweet little dimples.
Wren Sutton took out the things she’d bought for Zoey to see. "These pretty little dresses, hair clips, and little toys are all for you. Do you like them?"
Zoey nodded happily. "I love them."
"I’m glad you like them."
Just then, Zoey pointed to the door. "A mister rang the doorbell earlier, but I didn’t open the door."
Wren Sutton first praised Zoey for what she did, giving her a thumbs-up. "Not opening the door was the right thing to do. That was excellent."
Then, she asked, "What did the mister look like? Do you remember?"
"He was tall and handsome."
"Any other features?"
"His voice sounded nice."
Wren Sutton chuckled, deciding not to press Zoey any further. She let her go play with her toys.
She took out her phone, opened a certain app, and checked the log by time. She quickly saw that it was Spencer Sawyer who had rung the bell.
’So it was my senior.’
Wren Sutton closed the app and opened WeChat.
[Spencer, I just got home. Did you need me for something earlier?]
She waited for a few minutes, but the other side remained silent. There was no reply.
Wren Sutton hesitated for a moment, then dialed Spencer Sawyer’s number.
BEEP... BEEP... BEEP...
The call went through, but no one answered.
"..." Wren Sutton hung up and went to sit on the sofa, mulling things over.
’If he really had something urgent, he would have called me after no one answered the door. Since he didn’t, it must not be important.’
Just then, Zoey came over with a toy and sat down right next to Wren Sutton.
Wren Sutton snapped out of her thoughts and asked gently, "You want Auntie to play with you, don’t you?"
Zoey nodded emphatically, her eyes full of anticipation.
Wren Sutton put down her phone. "Okay, let’s play together."
「Several hours later, in the dead of night.」
Wren Sutton gave Zoey a bath, changed her into new pajamas, and carried her to bed.
The little girl wanted a bedtime story, so Wren Sutton obliged, beginning the tale of Snow White.
Before the story was even finished, Zoey had fallen asleep, clutching her rag doll.
Drowsiness washed over Wren Sutton, and she prepared to sleep as well. Just as she turned off the light, her phone screen suddenly lit up, accompanied by a BUZZ BUZZ BUZZ.
’Who could be calling so late?’
Wren Sutton picked up her phone and saw it was a call from an unknown number.
She answered reluctantly. "Hello?"
"Hello, am I speaking with Ms. Wren Sutton?"
"Who is this?"
"Your friend is drunk. We need you to come pick him up."
Wren Sutton asked warily, "Which friend? What’s his name?"
"I don’t know his name. I just heard him say he’s your senior from school."
Wren Sutton’s heart skipped a beat. She never would have thought it was Spencer Sawyer.
