Chapter 189: Chapter 189: Survivor in the Dark_1

"Damn it, those freaks are catching up!"

Wang Hu raised his torch, his face flush with anger as he cursed. Ahead in the pitch-black darkness, imperceptible to the outstretched hand, one could see humanoid creatures that walked on all fours like animals.

Their skin was pitch-black, blending into the night; their eyes were bloodshot, and they boasted snow-white, shark-like fangs.

They moved much faster than any normal human. Under the cover of night, they were like gecko-like humanoids scurrying about.

Their movements could be heard everywhere...

At this moment, these monsters didn’t rush them directly but used various items they could find nearby, like stones and glass, to hurl at them.

Of course, their main target wasn’t the people but the peculiar torches in their hands.

These creatures, they feared the light!

Although experiments had been conducted showing that light could not actually harm them unless set aflame, for some unknown reason, they were terrified of flames.

If there was an ordeal, these not-so-intelligent creatures would always prioritize attacking the source of the flames.

For this reason, they held their torches very high, two meters up, so they wouldn’t fear the enemy’s ability to hit them.

"Don’t let them catch you, head to Shelter No. 24, there’s a corpse of that thing there, they wouldn’t dare come close!"

Wang Hu yelled out, then swung the crossbow arrow in his hand at the dark-skinned monsters to fend off their attempts to extinguish the fire.

He then led the other twelve people in his team towards Shelter No. 24.

But he hadn’t taken more than a few steps when Wang Hu suddenly felt alarmed, noticing something flying towards him from the darkness. It wasn’t aimed at the two-meter-high torches but at him...

His pupils contracted, and as he attempted to dodge, he felt a severe pain in his knee.

Crack...

It was the sound of his kneecap shattering.

Wang Hu’s body stumbled due to the inertia of his run and crashed to the ground, falling heavily. The broken lower leg bone was connected to the thigh.

"Ah!"

The intense pain made him let out a wail, veins straining in his neck, but quickly suppressing the pain, he lifted his head in desperation and unwillingness, looking ahead.

At that moment, he felt a pulling force on both arms and, momentarily puzzled, looked up to see two young rookies from the team apparently trying to drag him along.

Although moved inwardly, he knew all too well that with a broken leg at such a time, there was no chance of survival.

Wang Hu tried hard to break free from the grasp of the two men: "How were you taught when we left! Run now! Run fast! Everyone else has already run! Keep up, don’t fall behind!"

His voice was filled with desperate unwillingness but also helplessness.

"No, we’re almost there, just a hundred meters..." the person pulling him refused to let go.

"You... get out of the way!"

Wang Hu was about to curse out loud when he suddenly noticed something was wrong; he saw something in the darkness stand up, getting ready to swing a stone and smash it towards them. 𝕗𝐫𝐞𝕖𝕨𝐞𝗯𝚗𝕠𝘃𝐞𝚕.𝐜𝗼𝚖

Wang Hu’s breathing paused, ignoring the pain from his broken leg. He forcefully pushed away the rookie trying to drag him to escape.

It was then that another stone came whistling through the air, aimed accurately at them.

However, Wang Hu dodged in time this time, avoiding the attack. He only received minor scrapes with a small piece of flesh sheared off his arm by the stone.

Unstoppable stones smashed behind the people, shattering and exploding on impact, a testament to the tremendous force.

"Forget about me! There’s something wrong with these mutants! Run for it!"

Wang Hu shouted, realizing at that moment that there was definitely something off about these mutants.

From his years of experience, he knew mutants should not be able to cross flames and directly attack humans. The occurrence of such an event meant there was something wrong with this group of mutants.

Although he didn’t know exactly what had happened, he was clear that if this intelligence didn’t get back,

then every night, the search teams would likely suffer heavy casualties.

"Run fast, tell them about the situation here." Wang Hu stuffed crossbow arrows into the hands of two people, pushed them away, and then saw a humanoid mutant with similarly dark skin in the darkness bending over to pick up a piece of broken stone, ready to strike at him.

He looked up unwillingly at that spot, also picking up a stone, shouting in despair and anger:

"Come on!!!"

In the midst of shouting, he hurled the stone in his hand and saw the other also swing their stone.

However, just as his stone flew out and he was about to despairingly close his eyes, he saw the monster’s head suddenly explode, red sauce, white brain matter, and shattered eyeballs bursting out...

He was stunned by the sight—how could I be this powerful? Could it be that I’ve awakened superpowers?

No, that’s not right, Wang Hu suddenly remembered that his throw was incredibly awkward and hadn’t hit the target at all...

It was at that moment that the intense sound of rapid gunfire erupted; he saw several figures sprinting from the darkness towards Shelter No. 24, holding firearms as they charged out.

Between the flashes of their gun muzzles, he could vaguely make out that these people were wearing combat suits and that there were faint mechanical and hydraulic sounds accompanying their movements.

In just a short span of time, those black humanoid mutants that considered this area their territory after the apocalypse scrambled to escape in panic.

"Special forces?" Wang Hu was startled. He was familiar with these people, having once been one of them.

But equipment this... "sci-fi," he had never seen before.

"Covering fire!" Someone shouted loudly, and he saw someone from that team dart out at an extremely fast speed, come to his side, grab his shoulder, and drag him towards Shelter No. 24.

Though the figure didn’t look very large, their strength was abnormally great.

Quickly, he was dragged into the middle of this squad that appeared out of nowhere, and then he saw several of the people who had fled towards Shelter No. 24 among them.

However, compared to the original team of thirteen, there were only seven here.

"The others are already inside the shelter, no need to worry," Colin explained next to him.

Now with the "Purification Heart" BUFF as his cover, he could once again run and jump openly...

"Thanks..." Wang Hu started to say when he suddenly noticed on the second-floor balcony of a building, another black mutant unreasonably picked up a stone and aimed to throw it at them.

He was about to give a warning when he suddenly saw the creature throw the stone, but as it left its hand, it flew in an utterly unnatural direction, smashing right back into its own face and smashing its head...

What was that?

Lifting a stone to smash one’s own head?

And as he stood there in shock, Colin, as if he hadn’t noticed anything, quietly continued the retreat, secretly pinching a golden card in his pocket.
