Saving the Heartthrob Frenemy-Chapter 509: ’Stranger danger’
After he calmed down Jolie asked, "Where did he tell you to go?"
Qie Xieling who only read the ’I left’ said, "You read it. I don’t care anymore. We are broken up from now on."
Jolie had little to no reaction as she read the letter. "You are being too brash. He said that his father’s people are hunting you down and it’s not safe to come with him. He gave you lots of money and said you should go to this place to hide for a while. He will look for you when he has sorted everything out and... he said he will keep his promise," said Jolie summarising the letter.
Qie Xieling finally looked at her before taking the letter back. He was even more furious than before. Instead of riding the wave together as husband and wife, Luo Muchen chose to face the music by himself. So what was the point of the words for better or for worse?
"Fuck," he swore as he got up, "I need to go help him."
Jolie laughed softly before asking, "Didn’t you say that you are broken up?"
Qie Xieling pulled up his outer robe while saying, "Help him first then break up with him but how do I get into the martial arts competition? I have to participate to protect him."
"Okay... just let me sleep for ten minutes," said Jolie but Qie Xieling dragged her out of bed.
"No no! Let me sleep. I am still hungover," yelled Jolie while holding on to the door frame refusing to barge as he pulled her into the corridor.
Qie Xieling knew she was being dramatic on purpose. Unfortunately, her act led to them receiving suspicious looks. Qie Xieling looked like a roguish brute trying to deceive a young innocent girl to go with him against her will. "Young miss, is he bothering you? Do you need help?" asked one of the friendly faced brawny men. The two of them froze and Jolie was seriously considering yelling ’stranger danger’ so she could buy herself more time to sleep.
Qie Xieling saw that expression in her eyes and knew what she was thinking. "Don’t you dare," he said through gritted teeth. 𝑓𝘳𝑒𝑒𝓌𝘦𝘣𝘯ℴ𝑣𝘦𝑙.𝘤𝑜𝑚
Ten minutes later Qie Xieling was storming ahead with Jolie running after him. His dishevelled appearance was a stark contrast to what he looked like when he woke up in the morning. His once-crisp outer robe was wrinkled, the perfect lapel undone. His unkempt hair spoke of the fight that occurred earlier. Jolie laughed nervously as she explained, "I didn’t mean to. I just wanted to sleep a little longer."
Qie Xieling didn’t pay attention to her. He continued walking away and Jolie was at a loss. She ran in front of him and blocked his path before saying,
"You are going the wrong way."
Qie Xieling, "..."
"Then show me the way," he said and Jolie happily led the way to a carriage near the inn.
"Your husband didn’t do heartless to leave you without transportation. Did you even read the rest of the letter?" she asked when she saw the look of surprise on his face.
Luo Muchen indeed left a horse-drawn carriage for him. It seemed he had bought a new one because this wasn’t the one Qie Xieling used before.
It was more lavish than before. It had rich, ornate furnishings, silk and embroidered cushions, intricately carved wooden panels, and gilded accents. The interior included delicate paper lanterns, silk draperies, small ornamental sculptures and artwork depicting scenes from nature. The overall ambience exuded opulence and reflected the wealth and status of the previous occupant. Inside was another letter. Luo Muchen had placed enough snacks for days and a change of clothes for Qie Xieling to wear.
"How thoughtful," said Qie Xieling as he settled down. "Should I consider this a parting gift?"
Jolie wanted to call him out for being too dramatic. Luo Muchen clearly stated that he would look for him so why was he making a fuss? The hired driver of the carriage had been given clear directions on where to head but the pair inside the carriage had other plans. Midway through the journey, Jolie had discovered something odd about Qie Xieling’s game character.
Qie Xieling’s character was abandoned by his mother when he was young but from the game panel, it seemed something had changed. His story wasn’t as simple as an orphaned ger abandoned by his mother because he was a ger and then sold to merchants by those he trusted.
Qie Xieling’s character did have a father. After the families rebelled and chose to rule their own territories the Black-hearted King as they called him had managed to escape their ploy.
The man who had no strength or the will to reign had been easily betrayed by the ones closest to him. When he was finally free of the throne which he never wanted in the first place he traversed the world and along the way fell for a spoilt young miss.
Her personality was nothing to be admired but as the saying goes, the heart wants what it wants. He loved her and did everything in his power to woo her. She didn’t even bat an eye in his direction so he let her know his deep secret. He promised her that he would take her to the palace one day and she would be his queen.
Sold on the idea of becoming queen she told her family about it but they objected for her to marry someone without status and family background. Who would believe that a man with old clothes and no money to be the missing King? They didn’t even take him seriously enough to report him to any of the major families. But she was stubborn. She ran away with him and vowed that one day her family would beg her when they realised that she was the new queen.
He took her with him to one of the secret royal mercenary clans loyal to the king. He wanted to get his throne back but not because he had the drive but because he wanted to fulfil his word to her. If not for her he would have continued living carefree. The leader saw right through him but they were still obliged to listen to his command.
