Chapter 302: Chapter 239: Faith

A few days ago, in a beautiful land filled with flowers and floating little people, a pink-haired woman sat under a tree. Her name was Paige, the goddess, and she was currently watching the human world through a screen.

She yawned lazily, bored. She often looked for something interesting, but sadly, nothing was happening.

As her boredom peaked, the sound of heels clacking caught her attention. The peaceful environment twisted. The bright sky turned dark, and the grass and trees withered.

Paige sensed something was wrong and looked up to meet a pair of rainbows coloured.

Paige quickly bowed. "Greetings, High god."

Before her was a person cloaked in darkness. Only the eyes, mouth, and masculine outline were visible. No one in the god realm had ever seen the High god’s true appearance.

Paige trembled as the darkness suffocated her, but she couldn’t turn away from the High god’s gaze.

"How have you been, Paige?" the High god asked.

Paige clenched her fists, calming her nerves. "I’ve been well, High god."

"Could you do something for me?" the High god asked, smiling widely.

"And what would that be?" Paige asked, curious.

"I would like you to make that child Aurianna Vanluad of the Sandeph kingdom the Saintess."

Paige trembled upon hearing the High god’s words. The human girl from the World Summit, the one he was so interested in. Just hearing her name made her angry. For the first time in years, someone could rival her beauty.

"Oh, you don’t like her? Is it because she’s more beautiful than the goddess of beauty?!" the High god said mockingly, his gaze piercing.

Paige gritted her teeth. Ever since Aurianna appeared, people had compared her beauty to Paige’s. Some even claimed she was more beautiful. Jealousy had taken root in Paige’s heart. She had secretly wanted Aurianna to be killed or suffer in the worst ways possible.

If the High god hadn’t appeared, she might have taken matters into her own hands, whether through a vessel or directly.

"If there’s actually a child more beautiful than the goddess of beauty, then you don’t deserve that title," the High god said with an evil grin.

"I can make you more beautiful," he said, and tears flowed down Paige’s face.

"Don’t cry, don’t cry. I can make you more beautiful. All you have to do is make that child Aurianna the Saintess. I want my niece to be someone important, after all," the High god said, smiling. Paige understood him, as he spoke the language of the gods.

"Why are you so concerned about this human? Why is she your niece, High god?" Paige asked, wondering about the High god’s motives. Why would the highest being in the Realm care about a mere human he called his niece? He was even willing to give her one of his marbles and saved Aurianna from whatever was trying to kill her.

"My matters do not concern you, so just do what I ask and I shall make you more beautiful," the High god threatened, glaring at Paige, who trembled in response.

"Yes, High god," Paige replied, the darkness surrounding her dissipating as the peaceful environment returned.

Paige lay there, pondering the High god’s words, her fist clenched. "I don’t deserve that title. Why would you say that?" she muttered to herself.

She closed her eyes and drifted back to the time she first met the High god. Humans, a hopeless bunch, sought a new belief, a new deity to replace their perished god. They sculpted a statue of an exquisitely beautiful goddess and named her Paige.

Fueled by the fast growth of the people’s faith in her, Paige came into existence. She blessed the human kingdom with prosperity and good health, grateful for their devotion. However, their focus shifted when she chose a human to be the Saintess. Praised as a kind soul and a messenger of the goddess, the Saintess garnered the people’s adoration, which made her proud at first. But yhey begun neglected their prayers to Paige, turning to the Saintess instead. Their faith, which was once always given to Paige, now shifted to the Saintess’s hands.

Unable to endure the neglect, Paige confronted the first Saintess.

"Are you serious?" the Saintess scoffed, glaring at Paige. "A goddess jealous of her people, loving me more than her? That’s a fun sight to see."

"You don’t understand! Without their faith, I can’t sustain the divine power to help the humans!" Paige retorted, her brow furrowed.

"Don’t worry, I’m the Saintess. I can protect them. What’s the need for a goddess like you?" the Saintess replied dismissively.

"Paige stared in confusion, "Huh?"

The Saintess, arrogance dripping from her tone, sneered, "What do you even do as a goddess? Sitting all day just looking pretty?"

Paige’s eyes hardened. "I see...You’ll regret this, I swear," she muttered, disappearing into thin air.

"As if," the Saintess scoffed. "With the spirit god by my side, why would I fear a mere goddess? I might even become a goddess myself one day."

Paige returned to the god lands, retreating to a private room. She slumped to the ground, a defeated expression clouding her face. Gazing at a screen displaying the human kingdom, she spent a hundred years observing them. Being a goddess and all, she didn’t need sleep or food, so she just sat there.

During those hundred years she watched on as humans continued to follow the Saintess and by this time not one person gave her the proper respect she used to receive. Even the church neglected their prayers and prayed to the Saintess.

So what if she doesn’t come down to fight battles for them? So what if she can’t come down and heal their wounds? So what if she can’t save them from pandemics!? That’s why there’s a Saintess, a messenger to help the people in place of her!

If a goddess doesn’t get enough faith they’ll lose all their divine powers. That’s why they need the faith of the people to survive. Without that faith they’ll slowly grow weaker and weaker until they fade into nothing.

"Humans are truly selfish creatures," a voice echoed, breaking the silence.

Paige turned to see a figure cloaked in shadow, an evil grin plastered across his face.
