Ruling the Historical Romance Novel as the Female Supporting Character-Chapter 294: Different Eras Bring Different Perspectives
"I don’t go out much, so I don’t provoke them," Su Yijia said. She wasn’t sure if their warnings were out of genuine concern or if they had some ulterior motive to form factions.
As soon as she entered the room, the conversation immediately shifted to the conflict between city and village aunties. They complained about how the village aunties were unhygienic and always looking to take advantage. The most troubling thing was their unity--if one was provoked, the rest would join in.
City aunties, no matter how capable, would find it difficult to gain any advantage. Su Yijia could easily imagine that if she were a village girl, those same village aunties would be praising her. The city aunties would be criticized as being high and mighty, always nitpicking.
Indeed, the different backgrounds shaped different habits. It was like she, coming from fifty years in the future, found it hard to relate to any of them. But she wouldn’t label them all as bad people because of this. At most, it meant she had less patience and was less inclined to spend time with them.
Noticing that Su Yijia seemed to be losing patience, the aunties quickly changed the topic. "Commander Qin’s health is better now. When are you two planning to have a child?"
"Just go with the flow," Su Yijia replied, pursing her lips. She did want to have a child soon, as after the college entrance exams were reinstated, there would only be the first two years when it was feasible to be pregnant and attend school. By the third year, there would be age limits for candidates.
She hoped to have a son and a daughter, not only to form a good family but also so that the older brother could protect his younger sister. Ideally, she would start preparing for pregnancy in two months. By the time the October college entrance exams rolled around, she would be newly pregnant and not suffer from morning sickness. Since they would be enrolling in school right after the New Year, she would be three months pregnant by then, and could endure the pregnancy sickness at home. The timing would also align with a July or early August delivery, during summer vacation. After a month of confinement, she could return to classes.
Although the weather would be hot at that time, her space had spring and autumn all year round. Without wind, she wouldn’t feel cold while bathing. Confinement would be very comfortable.
By the time she graduated in her senior year, it would be 1981. She would have to quickly have another child to complete her family plan before the implementation of strict birth control policies. But children weren’t like business or studying; no matter how well you planned, it all depended on fate.
"You must pay attention to this!" Auntie Ju patted Su Yijia’s hand, giving a serious reminder. "Even though you’re only twenty, Commander Qin is already twenty-six. His family won’t think that not having children yet is due to his late marriage. If you’re not pregnant in two months, his elders will surely say you’re unproductive and that he’s already twenty-six without being a father. I’ve seen this happen many times. Even if a couple has a good relationship, they can’t withstand this kind of pressure from family."
"Auntie, I know you’re looking out for me, but whether or not I can conceive really depends on fate. I can’t just sit here and worry," Su Yijia said with a hint of helplessness. She hadn’t expected that the issue of having children would be such a constant topic of discussion. After all, she had only been married for two months, and the previous two months had been spent with Qin Kaize recovering.
"Listen to Auntie. If you’re not pregnant in two months, go to the hospital for a check-up. At the very least, you need to be pregnant before the New Year; otherwise, Qin’s relatives will nag you to death," Auntie Wang added quickly.
In truth, Auntie Wang thought Su Yijia seemed too young to have a son. But if she had a few more pregnancies, surely she would eventually have a son. Otherwise, how would she establish herself in the Qin family?
"Let’s see," Su Yijia responded perfunctorily.
Could Qin’s relatives really come to pressure her? They were probably praying daily that she wouldn’t remember them. After all, her husband had no connection to the Qin family.
If her grandparents hadn’t been held back at the farm and the environment wasn’t so uncertain, the Qin surname would have long been changed. Su Yijia’s hand was getting warm from being held. She tried to pull her hand back, but Auntie Ju instinctively tightened her grip.
Feeling suddenly irritated, Su Yijia exerted a bit of force to free her hand. Meeting Auntie Ju’s slightly cold gaze, Auntie Ju felt a chill down her spine and quickly closed her mouth.
Auntie Wang, not noticing the subtle exchange, continued to chatter. "Also, Miss Su, it’s not that Auntie is criticizing you. Commander Qin may be caring, but don’t let him handle household chores. He’s a great hero and will do big things outside. Our role as women is to manage the household and not let our men be distracted by trivial matters."
"Mm," Su Yijia responded even more perfunctorily. Although she rolled her eyes internally, she chose not to argue about such matters. A person from one era can’t impose their views on another era. Even if she thought their mindset was problematic, there was no point in arguing over it.
What’s the use of arguing? In this era, not ninety-nine but at least ninety-five out of a hundred people would think that their way of thinking was correct. If a dispute arose, her arguments would only cause others to ridicule Qin Kaize.
Once the door was closed, how they lived their lives was their business, unknown to everyone. Su Yijia didn’t feel the need to argue with these transient figures or diminish Qin Kaize’s reputation.
However, some people truly lacked awareness. Auntie Wang noticed Su Yijia’s straightforward response and became even more enthusiastic, wanting to offer more advice as a seasoned person. But sensing Su Yijia’s change in mood, Auntie Ju quickly pinched Auntie Wang.
Auntie Wang winced in pain. "Why did you pinch me?" she asked, frowning and trying to suppress her anger. The force was so strong it almost twisted her flesh.
While rubbing her waist, Auntie Wang glared at Auntie Ju. She hadn’t even had the chance to mention bringing her grandparents to live with them. Even mentioning the mother-in-law was pushing it; talking about bringing the grandparents was out of the question. If the Qin family elders knew, it would surely cause a huge uproar.
Commander Qin had always been the most dedicated in his team, so he must have accumulated quite a bit of bonus. But no matter how wealthy the men were, it was their own family’s wealth. There was no concept of supporting the grandparents.
Right now, the newlyweds were happily settled, but such matters could become the subject of endless complaints from family elders once things cooled down.
