Roadmap to the Boundless Sky-Chapter 137: Processing
On the twentieth of February, which was a day off for everyone, Chen Chuan and his teammates gathered in Douyi Hotel for a meal.
Most of the people had only joined the mission for Chen Chuan’s sake, but he knew what they liked, so before they had their meal, he checked the accounts and distributed the rewards based on their contributions to the mission. He also told them that he had not sold the implant and cashed in the gold certificates yet, so he would seek them out again after some time.
Clearly, he did the right thing, because after they got their money, the group became happier, and the atmosphere livelier.
Wei Changan toasted to Chen Chuan and said, “You’ve learned how to drive now. Why don’t you get a license and buy a car?”
Chen Chuan thought about it and decided to set it aside for now, because cars were expensive, and he had to take many things into consideration. While he had quite a lot of money, he needed to spend a lot of it for his training.
Besides, he could take the company car when he went out for missions, so he did not need to worry about transport. If it was a team mission, he could rent a car too. It was convenient and less of a hassle.
“I’ll think about it in the future, but there’s something I have to tell you, Changan. Due to certain reasons, the mission won’t be credited to any agent yet. The Foreign Affairs Department will only reveal it in a year. You will have to wait a little longer to get promoted to a high-ranking agent.”
Wei Changan leaned against his chair in a relaxed fashion and said with a smile, “Why even mention it? I still owe you one. Even without this, it’d only be right for me to help a friend. As for becoming a high-ranking agent? It’s not that important.”
Lin Xiaodi sat next to Ren Xiaotian. She had not participated in the ambush, but stayed in the city and sent information to them via telegrams. She was given a share of the reward, and she was currently happily counting how many snacks, hair decorations, and new dresses she could buy with it.
The moment everyone decided to dig in, Wei Dong started stuffing his face full of food without care for anything else. If he had to say how he felt about the mission, then it would be that he had not had his fill. Aside from being able to punch some people right after they snuck in, the rest of the ambush was a gun fight. He had learned how to use a gun, but he soon emptied his magazine and not one person fell from his bullets. Instead, he had better success taking out crossbow wielders barehanded. Not a single gang member was able to fight him head-on.
Wu Han sat next to him, and he really liked Wei Dong after working together with him during the mission. Wei Dong just hit whoever Wu Han told him to. He never asked for a reason and fought swiftly and efficiently.
In the future, I’ll bring him along on my missions, Wu Han thought.
Ding Liao toasted Chen Chuan and said, “Chen Chuan, if you ever have missions like this again, please bring me along.”
Chen Chuan clinked glasses with him and said with a smile, “I wouldn’t be able to hire an ace sniper like you even with money. If you’re willing to help, I’d be more than happy to have you on my team.”
“That’s settled, then.” Ding Liao laughed and drank his beverage in one go.
Most of the people present were martial artists, so they didn’t take any alcohol, and Ding Liao was no different. He firmly believed he could only shoot accurately with a clear mind.
The meal lasted for a little over two hours. Once it was over, they left the hotel together.
When Chen Chuan walked out of the building, he looked up. Last year, before he went to study at Martial Valor University, he had come to the hotel for a student gathering. In the blink of an eye, he had already experienced so many things.
Back then, he was focused solely on passing Martial Valor University’s follow-up exam. Now, he was already planning on how to go to Central City.
He looked down and trained his gaze ahead. His footsteps became even steadier.
Then, he heard a honk. It was Wei Changan. He had driven over and was waving at Chen Chuan and the other freshmen plus Wu Han. “Why don’t I send you guys back?”
Chen Chuan did not reject the offer. “Thanks, Changan.”
They got back to the university and Chen Chuan returned to his room. He took a shower and sat down in the living room before taking out the bone bead bracelet. He had been observing its effects over the past few days and found that one bead could stimulate his mutated tissue for around five days. There were still thirteen of them. If he used them sparingly, he could make them last for around two months.
Even though the time seemed short, he had gotten it for free, so he didn’t find it a pity. He had to continue doing missions to earn loads of money for his medicine, so he didn’t have to use up the bone beads right away.
While Chen Chuan waited for a reply from Gao Ming, he started taking up supernatural-related missions from the company.
The company provided him loads of benefits, so he had to return the favor. He decided to first raise the number of completed missions to increase the company’s evaluation points at the Department of Administrative Affairs, so he picked those that were easy to deal with.
The first one he chose was the Neverending Corn. This mission came from a hamlet outside Yangzhi City. It started off with a hamlet resident leaving behind a half-eaten corn due to an emergency, only to come back and find that the corn he had eaten had grown back.
In the beginning, he thought that someone was pulling a prank on him, but after a few times, he noticed that no matter how much of the corn he ate, it would grow back the next day. This wasn’t the case with just one corn either. All the corn he brought back were the same.
The corn he had altogether weighed a total of fifteen kilograms, and there weren’t a lot of them. Corn also didn’t sell for a lot of money, and if he really brought it to the shelves, he would have to worry about people stealing it, so he decided to just eat it. He also shared them with some of the hamlet residents he was close with. Some of them were worried that there might be some problems with the corn, but he brushed off their worries.
However, once they ate the corn, the hamlet residents soon realized that they could not stomach anything else aside from the corn. After a few days, they also became abnormally weak and exhausted. They lost a lot of weight, but they didn’t think that there was anything wrong with it. Even when other people told them about these things, they didn’t care.
The hamlet only realized something was really wrong when these people died of starvation. The remaining residents all believed that the corn was the problem, so they burned it all. Yet that did not solve their problem. After some time, the corn showed up again, and something similar happened once more.
Multiple repeats of this incident were required for the hamlet residents to finally admit that they were unable to solve this problem. They reported it to the Village Management Bureau, and the bureau made this mission public, but no one ever took it up. It had been two years since then.
When Chen Chuan arrived at the hamlet, he found that it was already empty. There was a warning sign placed at the entrance. The government official from the Village Management Bureau who came with him didn’t even dare to go in.
Hence, Chen Chuan went in alone. When he got close to a house, his second self started blurring a little.
Chen Chuan pushed open the partially shut wooden door and went inside. When he got to the kitchen, he saw a few fresh ears of corn sitting on the kitchen counter. The corn kernels were full and golden, and they let out a fragrant smell, as if they had just been cooked. Just the sight of them made Chen Chuan’s mouth water.
He paused to observe them, then moved on, combing through the hamlet and uncovering corn in practically every house.
Before he came, he had read through the information about the mission. It wasn’t as if normal people couldn’t get rid of the corn, but that they couldn’t just burn it and call it a day. If they did, the corn would just spread to other areas.
If the person who discovered it first had eaten everything, including the corn cob, this problem would have been settled. This meant that if they had received guidance from the beginning, the subsequent tragedies could have been avoided.
Now, it was a little more troublesome to get rid of the corn. They had to feed all the corn to cattle, then eat it all within a day with the help of others.
After observing the hamlet, Chen Chuan knew what he had to do. He went back to the company and told Ren Shu what help he needed to take care of the problem.
When Ren Shu heard that he could participate in getting rid of the Neverending Corn, he was really excited. His business partners were also really pumped up. They immediately hired people to buy cattle and got rid of all the corn within a day. After they came back, all of them felt fulfilled.
Chen Chuan, however, shook his head at this. While getting rid of the Neverending Corn was indeed something worthy of joy, he felt that if they could provide consultation on how to get rid of these supernatural beings, they would be able to avoid such things from happening.
He brought it up with Ren Shu. Any other company wouldn’t have agreed to it, because it meant they would be losing business, but Ren Shu and his business partners didn’t think so. They were not going to be able to finish all the missions they had taken within a short time, but even if they ran out, they could go to the Department of Administrative Affairs to get more. Besides, normal people could only take out a handful of supernatural beings on their own, so offering consultation wasn’t a problem. It would even boost their company’s reputation.
The most important thing was that Chen Chuan was the one who made the suggestion, and he was an important business partner of theirs, so they had to take his suggestion seriously. That was why Ren Shu agreed to it so easily.
Since he didn’t use much energy doing the mission, Chen Chuan took care of a few more easy missions.
The next one he took on was an old case, because not only had the clients disappeared, but even the supernatural beings were nowhere to be found.
Yet as long as he could verify that the supernatural beings were gone, the mission would be considered to be completed. This was really useful for getting evaluation points for the company, and Chen Chuan got money for it, so he didn’t make the trip for nothing.
Soon, the end of the month arrived.
In the morning, right after Chen Chuan woke up, his phone rang. He picked up the receiver, and he heard a familiar voice. “Hey, cuz. It’s me, Gao Ming.”
Chen Chuan perked up. He had never urged Gao Ming to work faster, because he knew that his cousin was responsible with his work. If he didn’t call Chen Chuan, it meant that he hadn’t finished his investigation. Since he called now, it meant that he had results.
“Hey,” he greeted Gao Ming back.
“Cuz, I’ve finished my investigation, but there are certain things I can’t tell you over the phone. I’m going to come back during the first day off of next month. Let’s meet up and talk then,” Gao Ming continued.
Chen Chuan knew this was important, and that talking over the phone wasn’t convenient. After some thinking, he said, “Alright. Let’s meet next month.”
Once he hung up, he started walking away, but after just a few steps, his phone rang again. He picked up the receiver. This time, it was Ren Shu. “Mr. Chen, are you free today?”
“A mission?” Chen Chuan asked.
“Yes. Jia County’s Department of Administrative Affairs came to us and asked us to help them get rid of a supernatural being. Do you have time for it?”
Jia County’s Department of Administrative Affairs, huh?
Even if it was just a county-level department of administrative affairs, it was still a governmental department. While Chen Chuan had gotten the necessary evaluation points, it didn’t mean that getting more from other governmental departments would mean nothing. If he could complete their mission well and get more evaluation points, it would be beneficial for him when trying to get the armor permit after the unrestricted defense permit.
Hence, he said, “Alright. I’ll go over right now.”
