Chapter 42: Chaos At The Academy

BOOOOM!!!!!!!

An explosion goes off towards the direction of the academy and I find myself already looking that way. There isn’t really anything for me to notice from this far away since the darkness blocks so much of my vision.

Without thinking I start to run towards the direction of the academy, keeping my sword ready in my hand.

Footsteps are also all I can hear running behind me as I continue to make my way.

"I hope you don’t mind me tagging along, I don’t really like waiting around during stuff like this," She says while running alongside me.

"It doesn’t matter to me. I just don’t want to let people die," I reply without slowing down.

I didn’t expect anything bad to happen at the academy since it is protected by the light bearers... But it seems like it isn’t enough against whatever attacked.

I’m sure some strong people should be there to help protect the students and some of the non awakened people.

At least it doesn’t hurt to be kind of optimistic about it for now.

But continuing to navigate through the dark while running is definitely quite a challenge right now; luckily I can see some sort of light in the distance.

Flames can definitely bring some more light in to protect them from zierel... Or at least that’s what I think.

"An explosion within the academy is kind of strange. That tells me that the enemy is trying to lure someone in," The woman speaks up.

I didn’t think about it like that at first but I can’t say it is surprising. This could be quite the risk for me to be heading back if it is a trap to lure someone in.

I’m guessing they want to get a light bearer there somehow... But who could they be aiming for?

"I don’t know who they want, but my guess would be Airi," She responds.

Airi did mention having something to handle before joining me out here.

I end my conversation with the woman as I find myself standing a few feet away from one of the walls to the courtyard.

"The fire is coming from somewhere within the center of the courtyard," The girl speaks quietly.

I completely forgot that she came along with me for a second there since I got lost in my thoughts. This girl also didn’t give me any name, not that I had the chance to ask either.

We were just in a fight before I ran here.

"Then I don’t see a reason to waste time out here," I reply while approaching the wall.

She jumps over the wall after hearing my response, leaving me on the other side. I take a second and then follow behind her.

Thump.

I land without an issue and notice that people are running around in a panic in the center of the courtyard. No threats are clearly visible at the moment but it does strange here.

Almost like someone is lurking in the shadows.

"I’ll look around for any sign of Zierel while you check on the people here," The girl says before running off.

"Guess I’m taking orders now," I speak quietly to myself.

After taking a few glances around I can notice that some of the students are fighting amongst themselves in front of the academy.

Arguing about what to do here.

I don’t know what they think is going to happen here when none of them know how to use their power... Or maybe I’m just assuming that since I haven’t been here.

They might be stronger than me in that sense. I don’t have a single clue on how to use my actual power yet.

"What do we do about this?" A kid asks.

"I don’t know!" Another shouts.

"Maybe panicking isn’t exactly the right thing to be doing here," A girl speaks up with a calm tone in her voice.

As I get closer to the group of students by the entrance I notice a familiar face leaning up against the wall by the steps. The short purple hair is definitely hard to miss... It is Tess.

She’s standing there with her arms crossed as the others try to calm down enough to make a plan.

I grip my sword as the sound of footsteps shuffle behind me.

It doesn’t sound anything like the zierel I dealt with earlier... It definitely seems more like human steps. Or maybe the girl from before is making some noise from behind me.

Without hesitation I turn away from the students and look back towards the center of the courtyard. Ahead of me I can see her standing before multiple zierel.

The fire is extinguished... Almost like they put it out the moment we arrived.

"She’ll probably die if she has to fight them all by herself, you should give her a hand," the woman suggests.

I already have the intention of doing so since she did heal the wounds she inflicted on me earlier. Plus she doesn’t seem to be on the wrong side of the battle.

She could be a good ally to have if everything goes well. We’ll just have to see when it is all over.

"Just be careful since a hybrid could be lurking around too," She advises with caution in her voice.

In a few moments I reach the girl, keeping my sword up and ready to strike.

I didn’t realize it at first but the zierel around us are definitely a lot like the ones I saw on the first street, except they look a lot bigger. The claws are also extending a bit further than the monsters from before.

1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 9, 12. The number of them seems to be going up with each second that passes by.

"We should probably get started so we don’t get overwhelmed by the amount of zierel that are pouring in," I say with a serious tone.

Instead of responding she rushes past me with her knife in hand; I watch as a flurry of slashes go across one zierel after another.

Splat!!!!

Blood begins to hit the ground as she slices across their throats, slowly taking down their numbers. This gives me the perfect opportunity to lend a hand in this situation as well.

I rush in as well, swinging my sword around while keeping calm.

No matter what I need to remain calm here so that I can keep the upper hand against these monsters. There’s no guarantee that the win will be ours yet.
