Chapter 45 - Monster

"I want you dead!" one of the assassins shouted, initiating a coordinated group attack.

Two of the assassins dash from each side while the remaining three attacked forward.

'I might truly meet my end this time,' Sidius muttered with a hint of worry.

However, he did not have time to think about it because of the rapid movement of the assassins.

Although Sidius appeared like a formidable chosen, the tough pretense was just an act, meant to intimidate his enemies. In reality, the accumulated fatigue and injuries had pushed him dangerously close to the brink of defeat.

The assassins refused to fall for his facade and had already cut off any escape routes. Sidius was left with an option but to fight.

'They are well-trained,' Sidius observed, noting their quick decision making.

Even in the face of a dire situation, Sidius maintained his calmness and aloof. He still saw that although the assassins found out his act, they still feared him to some degree.

Seeing this, Sidius smirked.

He looked coldly at the approaching assassins and made a remark, "You need to have the ability for such actions. Come at me."

With a subtle infusion of his dark element, he tightened his grip on his dagger and threw it forward.

'I must survive,' he reminded himself, maintaining his composure.

Sidius closed his eyes to concentrate. He gathered all of his remaining mind power to control his mana.

In a mere seconds, he unleashes his second technique— Thousand Cuts, which he had not yet mastered but he had this bold idea in mind.

He planned to couple the teleportation of the Phantom Throw to reinforce his speed, enhancing the efficiency and preparation time of Thousand Cuts.

The assassins, who were poised to strike Sidius, suddenly felt a gush of wind past them.

- Shua! Shua! Shua! Shua!

Within moments, they sensed several cuts in their body. Their black clad were torn and small wounds and bloods spurt out from their skin. The wounds were far from being grievous but it does have its own merits.

However, one of the assassins let go of their formation and lunged at him, successfully hitting him at his side.

Sidius retreated a few steps, holding his wound, which was dripping in blood.

"Nullifying poison again!" He gritted his teeth, this time, he was really annoyed.

Flung his dagger once more, he unleashed his dark energy. Forcefully using his life force to mend the poison and his broken meridian.

"W-what is he trying to do?!" The assassin who slashed him asked, "H-how can he still move?!"

"Don't ask! Maintain the formation!"

However, Sidius did not give them time.

With a swift motion, he unleashed another wave of Thousand Cuts and passed through the midst of assassins.

This time, the dripping bloods of assassins worsened, but it still paled in comparison to the toll Sidius exacted upon himself for forcefully using his torn body to unleash the combined attacks.

Sidius even nearly damaged his own foundation.

"M-maniac..." one of the assassins muttered unconsciously.

They obviously understood the situation very well. Despite Sidius being more gravely injured than they were.

They had already possessed a solid grasp of his skill set from fighting him before, but they still couldn't hold a candle to him.

Sidius seemed like a fly that they could never catch.

"Did he drink the antidote?!"

"That's not important!" someone interrupted. "We need to kill this brat!"

"Cut him!" one of the assassins shouted, dashing towards Sidius.

Sidius slipped through them but one of their daggers still found its target on his left shoulder.

He did not care about it, unleashing another wave of Thousand Cuts and another set of slashing sounds can be heard.

"Who is this kid? A core disciple of some powerful faction or something?!" the assassin, next to the first speaker, commented.

'Also, how is he even cutting the same set of wounds from before?' one assassin from the left muttered, dumbfounded.

'What a monster!'

After the two consecutive combined technique attacks, while they had only caused minor injuries, the second one precisely hit the previous wounds, worsening the damage.

'Good, my mastery in Thousand Cuts increased!'

'As I thought, training with your life on the line is still the best,' Sidius thought.

'However, although lowering the damage output of Thousand Cuts allows me to sustain the use of combined attacks for a few more rounds, my body can crumble at any moment now.'

'I need to finish this battle quickly!'

Sidius resolved. This time, he was determined to launch another attack even if he had to spend a huge price.

Poising the same stance, he unleashed all of the dark.energy he could possibly muster.

"A-again?!" the assassin from the back exclaimed, noticing Sidius was preparing for yet another attack.

'If this continues again, we will succumb to blood loss!' the assassins collectively realized, crying inwardly.

"L-let's talk boss, you know you will also die from blood loss right?" one of the assassins suggested.

The other assassins also looked at him and agreed.

"Right... right—?"

However, Sidius did not listen to their pleas and had already darted past them, followed by the slicing sounds.

- Shua! Shua! Shua! Shua!

However, Sidius did not listen to their pleas and had already darted past them, followed by the slicing sounds.

- Shua! Shua! Shua! Shua!

The assassins groaned in pain, collapsing one by one. They were trembling purposely with blood, continuously gushing out from their body.

Sidius did not underestimate the situation and launched a finishing move. He took advantage of the awkward, falling position of the assassins and dashed through them once more.

This time, he did not lower the damage of the technique's damage output anymore and went all out.

"Fuck... I feel like dying," he chuckled. Nonetheless, he still continued his attack.

He prepared so much for this situation. From getting the assassins angry to lowering their guards.

Using the Thousand Cuts' full damage output needs longer preparation time so he strategically created a situation where the assassins could not counter attack within those crucial moments.

Tightly clutching the dagger, Sidius executed Thousand Cuts, this time without incorporating the Phantom Throw.

- Swish! Swish! Swish!

With swift and precise movements, he flashed through them more slowly than the combined attack earlier but with certainty.

It forced the assassins to breathe their last and meet their doomed.

"What kind of m-monster did we offend?" the last one to perish muttered, gripped with remorse.

Simultaneously, the illusion array was deactivated, revealing the real dimly lit street.

"Guwaaack!"

Sidius dropped on his knees after the attack. One hand supported him to prevent a collapse as he continued to cough up blood.

'I think I spent more than I expected,' Sidius muttered with serious eyes.

The Nullifying Smoke took its toil on him, leaving him torn and exhausted. He had no choice but to forcefully unblock his meridians to restore the flow of his mana, lest he meet his doom at the hands of the professional assassin.

After the fit of coughing had subsided, Sidius turned his head and summoned his remaining strength to lift his heavily injured body, which he had grown numb, in an effort to get out of the perilous situation.

As he took several cautious steps along the narrow alley, Sidius heard a faint sound.

He stopped and complained inwardly.

"Don't tell me... another ambush?!"
