Richest Man: It All Started With My Rebate System-Chapter 53: An Unwanted Interruption
Lena frowned when she heard what the man said. She casually glanced at the woman beside him and looked back at the man.
"I can see you brought your hoe with you today. The two of you should go bang each other like you have always been doing and stop polluting the atmosphere," she said calmly, with a neutral tone like she couldn’t be bothered.
The woman standing beside the man, lowered her head in embarrassment, feeling ashamed of herself.
The man scoffed when he heard what Lena said. He didn’t say anything to her but turned to Steven.
"Hey, I want the seat. Get up and leave," he said with an authoritarian voice.
Steven couldn’t help but look at the man like he was seeing a kid. He said nothing and simply sipped his drink.
The man saw Steven ignoring him and a deep frown creased his face. He reached out to grab Steven but Steven’s next words stopped him momentarily on his track.
"Don’t you dare touch me," Steven said, without bothering to look at him.
"I shouldn’t dare to touch you?" The young man laughed mockingly. "Who the hell do you think you are you say that to me? Do you know who I am?"
Steven slowly turned and looked at the young man.
"What? Your parents didn’t tell you?"
The young man’s face squeezed in anger when he heard Steven’s dismissive tone and words. He couldn’t believe that someone could talk down to him, the son of a director of the biggest companies in the state.
He wonder who the hillbilly in front of him was for him to have such audacity or was it because he has no idea who he, Drew Mercer was.
As far as he’s concerned, almost every young person in River Oaks know who he is. The only things he could think was that this hillbilly is someone who just moved into the city. It’s the only reasonable explanation.
He found it very funny that a nobody who just moved into this part of the state dares to talk down on him. It was really funny and he made up his mind to make sure that Steven regrets what he just did.
He turned his attention back to Lena and spoke, "Lena, this has gone on long enough, Lena. Whatever point you were making, you’ve made it. Let’s move past this."
Lena looked at him like he was a fool and spoke, "You’re such a clown. You think just because your dad is one of the company’s director, that everything and everyone will be at your beck and call. You think just because of that that I will forgive you for sleeping around while we were dating? Not just with one woman but literally almost every low level female staff at the office. But newsflash Drew, you’re nothing and will always remain nothing."
The young man, Drew, closed his eyes briefly, with his face red from anger and his fist clenched so hard that his nails were almost tearing into his palm.
"Lena, take back what you just said," Drew said with a cold voice, with his gaze locked on her.
"What?" Lena chuckled. "Does the truth hurt that much? And what if I don’t take it back, what will you do? Treat me the same way you treated other girls who had refused your advances? Threaten to make my days in the office hell? Use your dad’s influence to fire me? Try to make sure that I don’t grow in my career? Well, go ahead and try it but be ready to face your roughest reality checks."
Drew’s anger increased with Lena’s word and he was just a single word away from grabbing her.
But he knew that she was right. Unlike other girls that he has been with, Lena was completely different and that was the reason he had done his best to woo her for for so long before she finally reluctantly agreed.
He had felt like a conqueror then but after he tried to get to bed with her, and she refused, he was infuriated. He felt like a man who go a prize but can’t enjoy.
After weeks of trying to get down to it and her constantly refusing, citing that they haven’t reached that point of their relationship, he got fed up and went back to his ways of sleeping around with other women. Lena found out soon enough and broke up with him in the presence of everyone in the office.
It had been a humiliating moment for him and he had been trying to get her back, in order to recover his slighted ego.
But there was nothing he could do because he had no leverage over her. Lena is the top acquisition in the company and the board love her so much that they would give into almost anything she asks, because of the connections and relationship she has built and maintained with her former clients, in her just over four years of working in the company.
That’s something Drew didn’t have. He only got his position in the company thanks to his dad, and he was aware that even his dad can’t use his influence to fire Lena. That would be a professional suicide.
Drew felt so powerless and extremely infuriated. Things were not going the way he wanted in the slightest.
Steven had been silently watching the whole drama and he finally got the gist of the situation. He understood that he and Lena had experienced the same thing but in different ways.
Her ex boyfriend has slept around with other girls, while his ex girlfriend had told him that he was barely her means of daily support.
He sighed internally and dropped his drink. He knew that with how things are, they need to leave.
There was actually no use staying any longer. The atmosphere has been ruined and it was already quite past midnight.
"Lena, it’s already quite late and you need to get to bed early so that you can wake up early for work tomorrow," he said, without a care that Drew was still standing there.
"That’s true. I would actually love to stay more but the atmosphere had been ruined by some lost pests," she said.
Steven nodded and stood up. He reached out his hand to help Lena up.
Steven’s words and blatant ignorance of Drew’s presence, pushed him past his tipping point and he flared up.
Without thinking and blinded by rage, he threw a punch at Steven, with the aim of pushing him off the guardrail.
Steven reacted to the attack that looked sluggish in his perception. He caught Drew’s hand and squeezed it, grabbed Drew’s head and smashed it hard into the table, effectively knocking him to the ground, unconscious.
He glanced at Drew, collapsed on the floor, said nothing and simply adjusted his jacket.
The lady with Drew, had been silent throughout the entire thing. And when Drew was knocked out, she stepped back so that she won’t get hit by Lena next.
"Let’s go," Steven said to Lena. 𝐟𝚛𝕖𝚎𝕨𝗲𝐛𝚗𝐨𝐯𝐞𝕝.𝐜𝗼𝗺
She nodded with a satisfied smile on her face, and stood up.
The two of them walked away from the scene.
The server approached them with a professional composure that suggested he had seen enough in a rooftop lounge on a Sunday night to have developed a high threshold for unusual situations.
Steven handed over his debit card without a word.
The server processed it on the portable terminal and handed it back.
"Thank you, Mr. Craig. I hope the evening was enjoyable."
"Most of it," Steven said. He glanced toward Drew, still motionless on the floor beside the overturned chair. "There’s a drunk man on the floor over there. You might want to have security take him out."
The server followed his gaze, looked at Drew for a moment, and looked back at Steven with the same composed expression.
"Of course, sir. That will be taken care of immediately."
"Appreciated," Steven said.
He turned to Lena.
She was standing a short distance from him, her jacket settled across her shoulders, with a calm expression on her face.
They walked together toward the elevator.
Behind them, Steven heard the server’s quiet voice calling for security through a radio. He didn’t turn around.
At the elevator, Lena pressed the call button. The doors opened immediately.
They stepped in and the doors closed behind them, cutting off the ambient noise of the terrace entirely. The elevator began its descent.
Lena looked straight ahead for a moment. Then she turned to him.
"Thank you," she said. "For tonight."
"It was a good evening," Steven said.
She looked at him for a moment longer, then smiled.
The elevator reached the ground floor and the doors slid open.
They walked out into the lobby and through the entrance into the night air.
