Chapter 423: Chapter 423: A Different Kind of Silence

The days following the battle passed in a way that felt both slow and fast at the same time.

At first glance, everything seemed calm.

No portals tore open the sky.

No alien commanders descended like gods of destruction.

No hordes of zombies crashed against their defenses.

Yet beneath that calm surface, something fundamental had changed.

Before the battle, silence had meant fear.

It meant waiting. It meant uncertainty, like holding one’s breath before an inevitable storm.

But now, silence was carried as resolve.

The survivors no longer moved like people barely clinging to life.

They walked straighter, spoke louder, and worked harder.

They weren’t just going on with their lives as survival, they were living like they used to before the apocalypse.

They refused to let intruders force them into living like refugees in their own homes.

Early in the morning, the training grounds were already filled with activity.

They had cleared a space outside the community that used to be a park and turned it into a training ground.

Now, everyone headed there to train after breakfast.

This had become their daily routine.

"Again!"

Ouyang Jin’s voice echoed across the open space.

A group of fire ability users stood in formation, launching synchronized fireballs toward a reinforced target wall.

BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!

The explosions caused the ground to shake, but the wall didn’t collapse.

Also, the attacks launched by the ability users were no longer as chaotic as before.

Now, they controlled their power better and the attacks were coordinated.

Nearby, the water ability users practiced forming compressed blades, sending them slicing cleanly through rows of wooden stakes.

"Faster!" one instructor shouted. "You won’t get a second chance in real combat!"

These were techniques Leng Pan had created for them.

Once mastered, a single attack could take down a regular alien.

Across the field, earth ability users were raising and lowering walls in rapid succession, practicing defensive formations.

Metal rods shot through the air as the metal users trained to control multiple weapons at once.

Even the ordinary survivors were not idle.

They practiced coordinated movements like dodging and flanking.

They were using physical weapons like swords and spears to train.

No one wanted to be the weak link again. And Leng Pan and Lu Zhen’s plan was to build the strongest army.

Before, many of them had fought out of desperation.

Now, they fought with purpose.

The difference showed in everything they did.

"I want to join the combat team," a young woman said firmly to one of the team leaders.

"You don’t have to," he replied gently. "Support roles are just as important."

She shook her head.

"I know. But I don’t want to hide anymore."

These were people who had been recruited into the base later.

At first, fear limited them because they were afraid of dying.

But now, they didn’t want to hide behind others.

More and more survivors volunteered for training.

Not because they were forced to.

But because they wanted to be stronger.

Beyond the base, several teams had already been dispatched to collect supplies.

Unlike before, these missions were no longer rushed or chaotic.

They were organized and strategic.

"Stick to formation," Sonny reminded his group as they moved through the abandoned streets.

Their movements were quiet and fast.

They cleared buildings methodically, collecting useful materials and eliminating stray zombies without unnecessary risk.

Even when they came across large groups of zombies or encountered aliens, they didn’t panic. Instead they changed their formation so fast the enemy didn’t have time to react.

Their combat was coordinated with each member of the team understanding their role.

Now, even supply runs were used for combat training, especially reaction time, change in formation, and strength.

It was as if the battle with the aliens had forced everyone to grow overnight.

Above the base, the two dragons hovered lazily in the sky from time to time.

They had become a constant presence.

A symbol of strength for the base.

They also went out to hunt for zombies or aliens alone at times, bringing back thousands of crystal cores.

Because of this, their bodies had become more solid.

Even though they were still blue and red, they didn’t look like a mass of water and a ball of flames shaped like dragons. They had become real dragons.

Now, they were no longer just weapons.

They were guardians.

For the first time in days, Leng Pan allowed herself to step away from the chaos of command.

She stood on the rooftop, watching the training in the distance.

Her expression was calm, but her eyes remained sharp, constantly observing the battles and analyzing.

"You’re working too hard."

Lu Zhen’s voice came from behind her.

Before she could respond, his arms wrapped around her waist.

She could feel the warmth of her husband’s embrace and it comforted her.

She leaned back slightly into his embrace.

"You’re one to talk," she replied softly.

He chuckled, resting his chin on her shoulder.

"I’m working hard too, but I still know how to take breaks."

"Is that so?"

"Yes," he said confidently. "For example, I’m taking one right now."

Leng Pan couldn’t help but smile.

They hadn’t had time to spend together for a while now.

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

They simply stood there, watching the base come alive below them.

"You’ve noticed it too, haven’t you?" Leng Pan said quietly.

"The way everything has changed?"

Lu Zhen nodded.

"They’re not afraid anymore."

"Not completely," she corrected.

"They’re still afraid... but they’re not controlled by fear anymore."

It was a welcomed change.

Fear no longer paralyzed them. Instead, it pushed them to work harder and become stronger.

Lu Zhen tightened his hold on her.

"That’s because you are a good commander. You showed them what is possible."

The wind was gentle that afternoon.

The air didn’t carry the oppressive heat that had plagued them before.

It seems that the extreme heat was behind them, but it wasn’t known what disaster would follow.

Everything felt normal, almost peaceful.

However, this illusion couldn’t deceive anyone.

It was just the calm before the storm.
