Chapter 355: Chapter 355: The Grief of a Mother

"Yeah, the heat is killing me. Honestly, it could have given us a few days to adjust from the extreme cold. ๐™›๐“ป๐’†๐“ฎ๐’˜๐™š๐™—๐’๐™ค๐™ซ๐“ฎ๐’.๐“ฌ๐’๐™ข

But plunging us into so much heat after enduring the cold weather for weeks. How many humans can survive this?" Momo complained as she opened the freezer and grabbed a bottle of green juice.

This was part of the supplies Momo had suggested making using the vegetables harvested during the cold winter.

It is a healthier choice to drinking the packaged ones.

Even though being picky now was almost ungodly, Momo never cared about these things.

If she could make a choice, she would choose the best for herself.

While the three of them chose their preferred cold drink, Leng Pan walked into the apartment with a downcast mood.

Everyone there noticed immediately that something was wrong with her.

Even though they wanted to know what had happened, they chose to give her space to sort out her emotions.

If she wanted to talk about it, they would listen.

The whole family sat down for breakfast like always, but today the menu had changed.

Instead of the usual hot meals on the table, most of them were cold.

There was a plate of vegetable buns mixed with lean pork, another one with sliced fruit, and a jug filled with fresh cold fruit juice.

No one was in the mood to eat too much with how much the heat was making them uncomfortable.

So, the few dishes were enough for the whole family.

Leng Pan forcefully pushed the image of the drowning children to the back of her mind and focused on eating.

Lu Zhen could tell that she was just pretending and was still conflicted inside but chose not to say a word.

They had just finished their meal when shouts were heard from a building a short distance away.

The building was within their community and was one of those least affected by the meteorites that had fallen and crashed many structures.

The shouts sounded like many people trying to talk at the same time, which confused Leng Pan.

"Someone is trying to jump off a building." Lu Tao suddenly informed them.

Gasps filled the room at the mention of what was happening outside.

"After surviving for so long, why would anyone want to end their lives now?" Li Yunjia asked, obviously stumped because she didnโ€™t understand such reasoning.

โ€™It probably has something to do with what happened that morning.โ€™ Leng Pan thought to herself.

Even though not a very large number of people died and most of them were children, this might actually increase the possibility of suicide after.

Parents who couldnโ€™t take the loss of their children would probably find it hard to survive.

Even though some parents were heartless and abandoned their children to save themselves, not everyone was so devoid of humanity.

"She keeps saying she doesnโ€™t want to live anymore, and is carrying a child of about a year old." Lu Tao explained.

He was the perfect surveillance for the team with his X-ray vision and super hearing.

So, even though the incident was taking place a distance away, he could still see and hear clearly what was happening.

"Is she out of supplies?" Auntie Li asked while at the same time she stood up and walked over to the window.

The others followed behind her including Leng Pan, who found another reason to blame herself.

When the window was opened, everything could be heard clearly.

"No need to convince me. I canโ€™t keep on living anymore. I know itโ€™s selfish, but I canโ€™t." The woman attempting to jump said tearfully, her voice cracking as she uttered those words filled with despair.

"What happened?" Someone sitting in a rubber boat parked a short distance from the building asked.

"I heard that her husband and ten-year-old son died this morning.

They were playing on the ice when it suddenly melted and no matter how her husband tried to swim to save their son, he failed and both drowned." Another person shouted from the window of the floor below the one the woman was standing on.

"What!? Thatโ€™s tragic." Even Lu Tao shouted in shock.

"Itโ€™s the apocalypse. Many more incidents like that will happen because more natural disasters will follow.

Sometimes, it is impossible for humans to fight against nature." Lu Zhen said calmly as if everything going on around him had nothing to do with him.

However, his explanation was just a way to comfort his wife, who seemed to have been hit by another wave of guilt.

"What Ah Zhen said is true.

Now, even protecting oneself is a challenge. Finding food is a huge problem, and the issues will keep piling up.

In fact, I usually think that those who left in the first wave were lucky.

They didnโ€™t have to struggle and didnโ€™t even know what hit them.

They left in peace, and with the dignity humans deserve." Uncle Li supported his nephewโ€™s thoughts completely.

As they spoke, the woman in the other building took a dive with her baby crying in her arms and plunged herself into the water below.

Because all the ice seemed to have melted completely, her body disappeared as soon as she entered the water.

The ice had been as high as seven floors and the water was no different.

So, falling in, meant certain death, especially if someone was trying to commit suicide.

Leng Pan watched as that woman took her life, dragging along her child with her.

In a single morning, a family of four perished and would probably be forgotten in a few days.

A sigh escaped her lips as she turned to look at her family. She suddenly felt the heavy stone pressing on her heart disappear.

Her family was still by her side. Now wasnโ€™t the time to mourn others and feel sorry for them. She had to focus on what was important.

Even though this apocalypse was a little different from the last one and they had prepared earlier in advance, a significant problem still remained.
