Chapter 36: a warning

"If you continue to pressure her to accept you, I will be the first to oppose your relationship," Adriana said calmly, but her eyes gradually sharpened as if emphasizing her disagreement with their relationship.

"What is your reason for doing this? On what basis do you dislike my intention to have a relationship with Valerie?" Samuel wondered.

"Well... I have many reasons," Adriana replied.

"Tell me..."

Adriana sighed and leaned back in her black chair.

"I don’t like it because you are a traitor. I appreciate you helping Valerie all this time; without you, she might be homeless. But what you did is also wrong. You helped her in the wrong direction, letting her hide while you knew Damian and our family were so confused trying to find her. It’s like showing that you have a tough, heartless, selfish attitude... you only care about yourself," she said.

"I did it because I respect her decision, I respect her feelings as a hurt girl. You can’t blame me or her for hiding too long... You’re not in her position; you’ve never seen the man you love sleep with your friend!" Samuel said with frustration, then leaned back against the chair.

"I know I’ve never felt what Valerie feels," Adriana nodded. "But this is not the time to compare fates. It’s about how they solve problems without thinking about their feelings. We all live in a family; some people care about us... If she doesn’t have a family, then it’s fine for her to go wherever she wants, and you are right to help her. But look, she has a family, and at that time, her family was confused searching for her... Even you know Damian was confused looking for her, and he didn’t continue his madness with Clara... you know Damian regrets that action... but maybe you hid it from Valerie, so she keeps hating him and wants to hide!" she continued.

"I didn’t say anything to her about Damian; I repeatedly talked to her about her decision... I often asked her if she was sure or not because she had to talk to her family..."

"Why didn’t you mention Damian? Are you intentionally covering it up so she won’t go back to him?" Adriana wondered.

Samuel remained silent, his gaze stern as if he didn’t like this conversation.

Adriana smiled thinly. "Without you answering me, I already know the answer. It’s a pity; my sister spent two years behind you while you’re not good for her. You make her feel like she’s losing family love, suffering..."

"She’s not suffering!" Samuel hissed.

"Of course, she is suffering; she’s pregnant, she needs attention..."

"I give her attention... She doesn’t feel lacking at all," Samuel said before Adriana finished.

"You don’t know if she’s happy with what you’re giving her!" Adriana retorted sharply, furrowing her brow as if she couldn’t act casually anymore. "Now, I understand even more that you do want to keep her away from Damian!"

"I’m not keeping them apart, but she indeed doesn’t want to be with him anymore!" Samuel asserted.

"Okay, fine!" Adriana nodded. "It doesn’t matter if she doesn’t want to be with Damian anymore, but it’s not you, the man who will be her husband one day. I don’t want her constantly in trouble!"

"How can you say that? I have a good plan for her; I can make her happy..."

"You can’t!" Adriana exclaimed before Samuel finished speaking.

Samuel narrowed his eyes.

"Just at the beginning of your relationship, she already feels very pressured. She doesn’t recognize her feelings... But now she realizes that she doesn’t love you, and being in a relationship with you will only get her into more trouble because Damian doesn’t like you. It will only make her confused... She will never be at peace if she continues a relationship with you because, after all, you are Damian’s former friend... She doesn’t want to keep dealing with Damian or be seen as a cruel woman!" Adriana explained firmly, then pointed at Samuel. "And you... I don’t know what you’re thinking. If you’re truly a friend, you wouldn’t pursue a girl still liked by your friend. But what you did made you look like an enemy... Maybe before, you were just an enemy in disguise, but now you’re not. I won’t let Valerie continue to be close to you... It will only get her into trouble again!" she continued, then stood up.

Samuel just remained silent, letting Adriana leave in haste.

’What is this? I think she has influenced Valerie... Now maybe Valerie doesn’t want to be with me because she thinks I deliberately kept her away from Damian... She knows my intentions,’ he thought angrily, his gaze so cold as if harboring anger, that even Adriana’s shadow seemed to dominate his thoughts.

--

In the cake shop, Adriana sat in a chair, watching Elena sitting with Daniel, who was holding a phone, probably watching funny videos.

She felt curious about Damian but hesitated to ask, feeling embarrassed and prideful as she had been the cause of irritation and distance between them.

"Valerie," Elena called.

"Uh, yes..." Valerie snapped out of her thoughts.

"I want to take Daniel shopping... But it’s better if you come too," Elena said, then glanced at Daniel. "I want to buy him new clothes... And there are a few other things. So, you should come," she continued.

Valerie hesitated, seeming reluctant to agree to Elena’s request.

"It won’t take long, maybe just 2 hours," Elena said.

"Um, okay..." Valerie stood up quickly. "I need to pick my bag first." She quickly entered the rest area in the shop and took a medium-sized bag, probably containing urgent items always needed by Daniel and herself.

Elena carried Daniel and then headed towards the red car, where a driver was already opening the door.

"Take us to the supermarket, then to the house we visited yesterday," she said.

"Alright, Ma’am." The driver nodded.

Elena got in and sat down while holding Daniel.

"It’s a shame you don’t have a seat for yourself yet," she said with a smile. "But don’t worry, one day, you will have a car for yourself and your mother. Complete with a baby seat," she continued, then kissed Daniel’s neck.

"Dada!" Daniel said, his eyes wandering as if looking for someone. "Where’s Dada?" he asked, turning to his grandmother.

Elena sighed immediately and embraced Daniel. "You will meet him, but not today. He’s very busy," she said, then kissed Daniel’s head, but suddenly tears fell as if she was sad.

’Oh God, what is this? I can’t let my grandson be far from his father and his mother. But why is the situation getting more complicated? Damian shouldn’t have listened to his father’s request... It could make Valerie hate him even more.’ She said in her heart, her gaze then shifted to Valerie, who was walking towards them in a hurry.

Valerie quickly entered the car after the driver opened the door for her, sitting next to Elena and occasionally looking at her awkwardly.

"Have you said goodbye to your mother?" Elena asked.

"Yes..." Valerie nodded. "She doesn’t mind us going together..."

"It would be more fun if she would join us."

"That’s impossible, she’s busy making cakes. Some customers want her creations, not the employees’... so she can’t go with us," explained Valerie, trying to get rid of her awkwardness.

Elena nodded. "Your mother’s cakes are always delicious and have a special taste."

Valerie just smiled and then looked ahead, the car was slowly moving, making her guess what would happen after this. Suddenly she remembered Darius who asked her not to be close to Damian or his family anymore.

’I hope this doesn’t cause new problems,’ she thought worriedly...
