Side Story Chapter 28

While the southern region of the Avalon Empire was the national breadbasket because of its fertile lands, the western part was full of steep mountains. Very little of it was flat.

The castle of Marquess โ€œBlack Turtleโ€ Turtler, the head of the western rebel army, was on one of those precipitous mountains. The mountain was over four hundred meters tall, rendering the castle practically impregnable.

โ€œTry that again. What did you say?โ€ Turtler asked.

โ€œThe First Prince cut off Dargo rane Suspenโ€™s head.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆHave I stayed in the mountain for too long? It hasnโ€™t been that long since the First Prince became an adult,โ€ Turtler mused.

โ€œThe report came from our spy in the south, and I double-checked the information through the Moonโ€™s Gate before I reported you.โ€

โ€œSo itโ€™s true. With enough money, those guys are capable of finding out the color of the Queen Consortโ€™s undergarments.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m sorry.โ€

โ€œIdiot. If he was going to be killed by a boy just like that, then why did he try that hardโ€ฆ?โ€ Turtler quietly clicked his tongue. โ€œWell, everyone on the continent knows how talented Selim Sanders is.โ€

With his tanned skin and muscular physique, Turtler looked like the typical big-hearted warrior, but his appearance was deceptive. He was actually crueler than a snake.

There was a very famous story about him from when the rebellion had first started in the west. Turtler decided he needed to set an example and had ripped apart one hundred knights he had captured as prisoners with his bare hands. He had the strength and temper to do it. On that day, one hundred corpses had been butchered between two piles to his left and right with, and crows feasted for days. The rebels with weak stomachs had vomited; it had been worse for the troops of the national army who had to face Turtler in battle.

โ€œThey might have lost their leader, but they wouldnโ€™t have given up right away. I actually met Mendes, Dargo rane Suspenโ€™s aide, so I know. He must have pretended to surrender and now heโ€™s waiting for a chance to backstab the national army.โ€

โ€œUmmโ€ฆ my lord. If youโ€™re talking about Viscount Mendes, heโ€™s already been killed by the Second Prince.โ€

โ€œWhatโ€ฆ?โ€ Turtler's eyes widened in surprise. โ€œThe Second Prince? Wait, are you talking about the one who recently returned to Avalon?โ€

โ€œThat is correct, my lord.โ€

โ€œI thought he had zero talent in martial arts.โ€ Turtler tilted his head in confusion.

โ€œThat turned out to be a false rumor. It turns out that Kireua Sanders is a true son of the Martial God.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆHehehe, thatโ€™s funny.โ€ Turtler chuckled.

The knight who delivered the report was confused; nevertheless, Turtler continued to laugh quietly to himself.

โ€œA tigerโ€™s cub is still a tiger, huh?โ€ he eventually continued. โ€œI didnโ€™t expect it, of course. Isnโ€™t this the first time in the history of Avalon?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m sorry, my lord. Iโ€™m too incompetent to understandโ€ฆโ€

โ€œWhen did the princes Avalon with the same father ever work together like them?โ€ Turtler smiled.

โ€œAhโ€ฆโ€

โ€œIโ€™m really looking forward to it.โ€ Turtler licked his lip with his scarlet tongue.

At that moment, a faint screaming came from underground.

โ€œArggghhh! Kill me! Kill me pleaaaase!โ€

โ€œTo think that the Martial Godโ€™s son will be screaming like thatโ€ฆ Itโ€™s really exciting,โ€ Turtler said.

โ€œIโ€™ll slit his throat right now.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s fine. Leave him be. If heโ€™s in pain, he should scream. When one is sad, one should cry. Laugh if youโ€™re happy. Smash everything around you if youโ€™re angry. That is human nature. Is there anything else you need to report?โ€ Turtler asked.

โ€œโ€ฆAh, come to think of it, I received information from the Moonโ€™s Gate that Kireua Sandersโ€™s next destination is here, the west.โ€

Turtlerโ€™s eyes lit up. โ€œHeโ€™s voluntarily coming to his grave. Does he seriously think that weโ€™re the same as those trash in the south?โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll lead our soldiers and knights and cut off the arrogant Second Princeโ€™s head.โ€ f(r)eeweb(n)ovel

โ€œHow dare you covet your masterโ€™s prey?โ€ Turtler sharply replied.

โ€œI-Iโ€™m sorry. I didnโ€™t mean to do thatโ€ฆโ€ The knight sweated profusely. Many people had been ripped in half when Turtler made that expression.

โ€œHehehe, Iโ€™m joking.โ€ Turtler chuckled. โ€œBut does that mean the southern rebel army is finished?โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll look into it.โ€ ๐˜ง๐˜ณโ„ฏโ„ฏ๐‘คโ„ฏ๐‘๐‘›๐‘œ๐‘ฃโ„ฏ๐‘™.๐‘๐‘œ๐˜ฎ

โ€œWas the southern rebel army weak or is the Second Prince strong? Just in case, send a โ€˜welcoming committeeโ€™ to the border. Considering everything, sending two of my knightly orders will be enough.โ€

The knight quietly heaved a sigh of relief and bowed at a ninety-degree angle.

โ€œYes, my lord.โ€

Meanwhile, Kireua was bidding his farewells after taking care of all his business in the south.

โ€œIโ€™ll get going too,โ€ he said.

Charlesโ€™s big eyes instantly turned teary. โ€œRun away immediately if things get too dangerous, sweetie.โ€

โ€œI will.โ€

โ€œIf bad guys say that theyโ€™ll surrender, donโ€™t believe and follow them right away, okay?โ€ Charles stroked Kireuaโ€™s hair.

โ€œโ€ฆWhat am I, a baby?โ€

โ€œOf courseโ€”youโ€™ll still be my baby even after you become a wrinkled old grandpa,โ€ Charles teased.

Kireua frowned, but still, he felt touched. He knew better than anyone that Charles was saying all this because she cared and was worried about him.

โ€œAre you sure you donโ€™t have to bring some of our soldiers and knights?โ€ Charles asked.

โ€œWell, the national army is in the west too, and Sir Ranger is also there. Besides, the southern region hasnโ€™t been stabilized, so you need all the manpower you can get.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m sorry. If your father had been here, I would have at least sent our knights with you.โ€ Charles gave Kireua an apologetic look.

The knights and soldiers werenโ€™t with them right now, so Charles didnโ€™t hesitate to blame Joshua.

โ€œYou seemed to miss him to death yesterday,โ€ Kireua joked.

โ€œI do miss him. Heโ€™s my loving husband.โ€

โ€œBlargh.โ€ Kireua lightly shook his head. โ€œThatโ€™s too much information for your son.โ€

โ€œCome on~ Get a girlfriend and see if you donโ€™t turn into me.โ€

โ€œSeriously, what part about His Majesty do you love that much? If I were you, I would hate him to death,โ€ Kireua pouted.

โ€œHeโ€™s handsome.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆGosh.โ€ Kireua gaped blankly at her.

Charles giggled. โ€œHeโ€™s also my one and only prince charming who always saves me from danger.โ€

โ€œMom, I might throw up now.โ€

Charles smiled gently. โ€œSo he must have a good reason.โ€

Kireua shut his mouth because he did resent the Emperor of Avalon on some level. Without any explanation, even to his family members, the Emperor of Avalon had vanished from the Palace.

โ€œYour Highness!โ€

Kireua was jerked away from his thoughts. From afar, a group of people were riding their horses toward Kireua and Charles. Kireua recognized them right away.

โ€œTheyโ€™re the knights of the south,โ€ Kireua mumbled.

There were five hundred of them. They had once been his enemies and fought against him. Up until a few days ago, Kireua had been worried about them backstabbing him, but they were now his allies, leading the way in stabilizing the southern region.

โ€œI need to deliver you a report!โ€ Sparc Murtan, the ex-commander of the White Tiger Knight Order, jumped off his horse.

โ€œWhatโ€ฆ?โ€

โ€œDo you know why the rebels in the north suddenly withdrew their army?โ€ Sparc asked.

โ€œWhy are you suddenly talking about the northern rebel army?โ€

โ€œI just heard this.โ€ Sparc didnโ€™t even pause to catch his breath before he began rattling off his report. โ€œItโ€™s not been confirmed, but the rebels in the north have found His Majesty's tracks.โ€

Kireua's eyes widened. โ€˜What the hell,โ€™ he thought.

Charles beat him to the punch.

โ€œWh-What?โ€ She strode forward. โ€œWhere did this information come from?โ€

โ€œThe thing isโ€ฆ itโ€™s not clear. Some heard it from their colleagues while there are other people who say that they heard birds talkingโ€ฆโ€

โ€œBirds? Birds talking in a human language?โ€ Charles tilted her head in confusion.

โ€œโ€ฆThatโ€™s the rumor thatโ€™s spreading among the troops right now.โ€

Kireuaโ€™s face darkened. Although they had no way to authenticate the rumor, it made everything make sense. It would be a disaster for the rebels if the Emperor of Avalon revealed himself now.

โ€œWhere were the signs of His Majesty found?โ€ Kireua asked.

โ€œHeโ€™s in the north.โ€

โ€œThe north?โ€ Kireua repeated.

โ€œYes, in the northernmost regions. In fact, itโ€™s above Lemegeton, the land of demons.โ€

Kireua needed to check this out, but in order to get to the north from the south he had to go through the lands of Turtler.

โ€œYour Highness, weโ€™ll go with you,โ€ Sparc declared.

โ€œHmmโ€ฆ?โ€

โ€œWe were just rebels, but you gave us a chance, Your Highness. Therefore, we wish to atone for our crimes and repay your kindness by assisting you.โ€

Just then, the Black Knights that had tried to protect Selim at the cost of their lives flashed across Kireuaโ€™s mind. He actually hadnโ€™t seen this coming.

โ€œYou could die,โ€ Kireua said quietly.

โ€œYou already killed us once, Your Highness.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™ve gone through all that trouble to save your lives, but youโ€™re voluntarily throwing them away.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s for our own good.โ€ Sparc shrugged.

Kireua tilted his head in confusion. โ€œFor your own good?โ€

โ€œWe had no choice but to leave the Palace because of the new emperor, we had to pick up our swords because of our familiesโ€ฆ Weโ€™re sick of it. We donโ€™t want to live that way anymore. We wish to lead a life where we can hold our heads high.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆAnd Iโ€™m your solution?โ€

Sparc nodded. โ€œYes. Youโ€™re the choice we wonโ€™t regret, Your Highness.โ€

Kireuaโ€™s smile deepened, but he didnโ€™t realize it.

Cain had come to keep an eye on the knights because he was worried that they would try to attack Kireua and Charles. However, Cain ended up chuckling.

โ€œYour Highness, youโ€™ve started down your path as a hero,โ€ he declared.

โ€œWhat are you suddenly talking about, Sir Cain?โ€ Kireua asked.

โ€œYou donโ€™t try to charm people, but they come to you anyway. That is the start of becoming a hero.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆHer Majesty Charles and you have a way of saying cringy things without flinching,โ€ Kireua grumbled.

โ€œIt was the same for His Majesty.โ€

Kireua's eyes widened after hearing that Joshua Sanders had walked down the same path, but he quickly regained his composure.

Although Kireua was Joshua Sandersโ€™s son, he couldnโ€™t and didnโ€™t want to understand his father. He might be the hero of the century for the people of Igrant, but he was just a heartless father to his children. Therefore, Kireua wanted to find out why his father had made such a choice and see if it was the right decision.

With his next goal decided, there was no reason for Kireua to hesitate.

โ€œWeโ€™ll subdue the rebellion in the west at once and head to Lemegeton right after,โ€ Kireua declared.

The knights saluted with bright faces.
