Return of the King, Dominating the City-Chapter 1340 - 1325: The Objective
"Sure, sure, Hua Mulan, Dongfang Bubai, aren’t they all like that?" Song Yun said, chuckling at Wen Changlin for having such an eccentric daughter.
"Let’s go, Shen Yan, let’s meet my big brother!"
Wen Ting invited.
"Uh..."
Shen Yan glanced at Song Yun, seeming to sense that Song Yun didn’t quite get along with this so-called leader of the military district’s top three.
Song Yun also frowned. If he went with Wen Ting to meet Lei Chenyu, would he be exposed too quickly?
Just then.
Wen Ting’s phone rang.
"Bro! Are you here yet?"
Picking up the phone, Wen Ting asked with a smile.
A little while later.
"Oh! Got it, alright, tell me when you come next time then."
After speaking, Wen Ting hung up the phone, unable to hide the disappointment on her face.
"What happened?"
Shen Yan asked.
"My big brother can’t come." Wen Ting shrugged helplessly, "They have something going on, so we’ll have to wait for the next time. I was hoping to show you what a real expert looks like, but... oh well, it’s fine. You can come with me to the military district, lots of experts there, not as good as my brother, but still quite impressive, especially those special ops teams, they’re really something!"
Song Yun looked at Shen Yan, who knowingly nodded and said, "Let’s skip the military district. They’re busy training and stuff. How about this, let’s find a place to grab a drink?"
"Drink? Is there any good place to drink in SH? You know, I haven’t been here long, I’ve mostly been abroad," Wen Ting said.
"I know SH well."
Shen Yan replied with a smile, "Just follow us!"
"Alright then."
Wen Ting hesitated for a moment and agreed.
Then, the three of them left the outdoor real-life CS training base together.
At the entrance.
"Let’s take this car."
Wen Ting climbed into a camouflaged Hummer and said, "I’ll give you guys a ride."
"Is this car yours?"
Shen Yan asked curiously.
"Yeah, would it be yours? Haha, it’s been modified, come on, I’ll give you a ride!"
Wen Ting gestured for them to get in.
Shen Yan and Song Yun exchanged a glance and climbed into the back seat.
Vroom.
The Hummer roared to life, shooting forward.
The strong acceleration slammed Song Yun and Shen Yan back into their seats.
Driving up front, Wen Ting put on a pair of sunglasses and asked, "Alright, direct me, where to?"
"Straight ahead, head to the Bund."
Soon, the trio arrived at the Bund. Led by Shen Yan, they entered a hotel next to the Bund and made their way to a rooftop restaurant.
"I just don’t like these refined places."
Sitting down while feeling the Huangpu River breeze, Wen Ting pouted.
"What do you prefer?"
Song Yun asked.
"I like eating large chunks of meat and drinking big bowls of alcohol. Back when I was in a foreign military academy, we all lived like that."
Wen Ting said proudly, "That’s a man’s life."
"You seem to be a woman though?"
"I’m a woman on the outside but have the heart of a man."
Wen Ting took off her sunglasses, hanging them to the side, "Back in West Point, I was the leading figure of our Shen Zhou Academy. Many people followed me back then."
"West Point Military Academy? You graduated from there?" Song Yun asked curiously.
"Yes." Wen Ting nodded and said, "Graduated with full honors, specialized in close combat."
"Have you been to the battlefield?" Song Yun asked.
"Battlefield? The North African battleground or Southeast Asia battleground? Or Mexico over there?" Wen Ting’s eyes sparkled as she asked.
Now Song Yun saw Wen Ting in a new light. Initially, he thought she was just a pampered rich girl wanting to experience something new. But hearing she graduated from West Point changed his perspective.
Song Yun realized Wen Ting might not be as superficial as he assumed, because in the world of military education, if you had to name the best school, the first would be Hunter School, and the second would be West Point. Graduating with full honors from West Point isn’t an easy feat, though Song Yun thought he could achieve it effortlessly.
Then when he asked if Wen Ting had ever been to the battlefield, and she could immediately name several well-known international battlegrounds, proving her knowledge.
Even though the world is mostly at peace today, there are many localized battlefields, like North Africa with its tribal conflicts, where many mercenaries train and complete missions. Then the Southeast Asia battleground against warlords, the Mexico battleground against drug lords, and the Middle Eastern battlegrounds like Syria, against certain regimes, along with Iraq and Afghanistan. Common people might know about Iraq and Afghanistan, and some who follow the news might know Syria, but places like North Africa rarely come up.
"Which battlefield have you been on?" Song Yun asked.
"I haven’t been to any."
Wen Ting shook her head a bit helplessly, "Right after I graduated, my father had me brought back, saying I needed to stay put for a while."
"Oh!"
Song Yun nodded. What was Wen Changlin’s identity? A descendant of the top echelons within the Red Wall, so naturally, Wen Ting is one of those elite offspring. Even if Wen Changlin wanted to let his daughter on the battlefield, it wouldn’t be allowed. If she were captured and used as leverage, who could bear that responsibility? 𝘧𝓇ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝘣𝓃ℴ𝓋𝑒𝑙.𝑐𝘰𝑚
"From how you talk, have you been to the battlefield?" Wen Ting looked at Song Yun with keen interest.
"No, I’ve just heard people say battlefields are places for mercenaries and bounty hunters to hang out."
Song Yun shook his head.
"I thought so. With your slight build, you’re good with daggers, but without strength and a killer instinct, you couldn’t kill anyone." Wen Ting shook her head disdainfully, suddenly remembering that suffocating feeling from before. On second thought, she figured it was an illusion. How could such a skinny man give her that feeling?
"Haha, I’m just Shen Yan’s sidekick, and daggers are a mere hobby, just a hobby." Song Yun said with a smile.
"Men should be more masculine, with some swagger. Like when I criticized you, even if I was right, you should have argued back if you were truly manly!" Wen Ting shrugged.
"Haha."
Song Yun laughed, giving no reply.
"Wen Ting, does your father have any free time tonight? How about we invite him for dinner?"
Seeing Wen Ting and Song Yun getting along well, Shen Yan finally voiced his main reason for the day.
