Chapter 83: Chapter 83: Which Eye Saw Me Spreading Rumors and Slander?

Mrs. Yates pointed an angry finger at Annabelle Linton and raged, "You wretched girl, raised with no manners! How dare you say such a thing? Our Vivian treated you like a best friend, always thinking of you, and what do you do? You incite your sister-in-law to spread vicious rumors and slander her. Is this how the Linton family raised you?

Have you no shame? Stirring up all this trouble, throwing our families into chaos... Aren’t you afraid of a little karma?"

Ashley Grant gave Annabelle Linton a roguish nudge with her shoulder, a smirk playing on her lips. "Well, sister-in-law, it seems we’re shameless rumor-mongers."

She looked at Mrs. Yates with disdain. "Ma’am, before you call other people shameless, you should take a good look in the mirror. You’ve got some fucking nerve, accusing others of having no shame."

Mrs. Yates was stunned that Ashley Grant would dare to speak to her like that. It only solidified her belief that Annabelle was a bad influence on the girl. ’She must be the one who taught Ashley to say all those awful things to Vivian,’ she thought.

"You are the company you keep, Ashley. Did your mother send you abroad for the finest education just so you could associate with people like *her*?! I am so disappointed in you!"

Then she turned to Leona Grant, who was sitting nearby. "Leona, just look at your sister! As the second young lady of the Grant family, she’s disrespecting her elders and spewing vulgarities. Is that how a well-bred young woman is supposed to act? She’s young and impressionable, and this appalling lack of manners is clearly something Annabelle taught her!"

At Mrs. Yates’s words, Leona Grant’s expression darkened, his thin lips pressing into a hard line.

’Annabelle is my wife, for God’s sake. Is this woman just going to stand here in front of me, calling her a slut one second and shameless the next, all while lecturing my sister? Does she think I’m a corpse?’

It was only then that Annabelle Linton noticed Leona Grant sitting beside Vivian Yates, along with Mr. Yates and Faye Sheffield.

Seeing his stormy expression, Annabelle met his gaze with an icy stare of her own.

’Does he believe Mrs. Yates? Or is he just angry that Vivian is being insulted?’

’Well, too bad. If he’s not happy, then I’ll just have to make a point of scolding them.’

Annabelle gave him a brief, sarcastic glance before looking away with studied indifference.

"You must be bored out of your mind. Do I need your permission to decide who I hang out with?" Ashley said mockingly. "Who the hell are you to be ’disappointed’ in me? In my eyes, you and your daughter are nothing but a pair of clowns. How dare you even show your face and run your mouth? If I were you, I would’ve bashed my head against a wall long ago instead of coming out here to frighten people!"

Mrs. Yates was left speechless.

With a sharp SMACK, Annabelle Linton slapped away the hand Mrs. Yates was pointing at her, her face an emotionless mask.

’I will not be lectured by some shrew pointing a finger in my face.’

"With a mother as clueless as you, it’s no wonder your daughter is constantly threatening to kill herself.

You should have some actual proof before you make accusations. Tell me, Mrs. Yates, which one of your eyes saw us spreading these so-called rumors? Who, exactly, are you calling a homewrecker? And another thing—if you have a problem with me, then talk to me. Why are you dragging my family into this?"

Before Mrs. Yates could respond, Faye Sheffield stepped forward. "It’s because you have no class, of course. Oh, I almost forgot—you don’t even have a mother. Your father was cheating on her while she was still alive. What kind of upbringing could you possibly have?

Annabelle Linton, you’re just like your mother. Destined to be nothing more than an accessory to a man your entire life. You have no ability to hold a man’s heart, so you resort to cheap, underhanded tricks. Calling you a homewrecker is a compliment. You’re just pathetic."
