Rejected by the Campus Belle, I Find My True Love-Chapter 413 - 411: The Village Chief Arrives
The rumor grew more absurd as it spread. It eventually morphed into a story about the first wife showing up with her child to demand an explanation, only to run into Xue Yang bringing Si Wen home. Then, a supposedly fierce fight broke out.
Almost the entire village came to watch the drama unfold.
Yet what they saw was Lin Xi happily embracing Si Wen.
"Si Wen, you’re finally here."
"Did you miss me?"
"I missed you to death."
Si Wen’s eyes curved into crescents, and she seemed to be enjoying the affectionate welcome.
What is happening? This drama isn’t very juicy. Maybe if we watch a bit longer... the spectators wondered.
After catching up with Lin Xi, Si Wen immediately went up to Xue Yang’s parents and greeted them politely, "Hello, Uncle and Auntie."
No matter how impressive you were out in the world, you always showed respect to your elders.
Xue Yuanqing and Zhong Hailan hurriedly welcomed her. "Hello, hello, welcome to our home."
Si Wen had her driver bring out all the gifts she had prepared.
"Si Wen, this is too much. We can’t possibly accept all these gifts," Zhong Hailan said, pushing the items back toward her.
"That’s right, we can’t accept these." Xue Yuanqing and Zhong Hailan shook their heads in unison.
"Uncle and Auntie, they’re nothing expensive. I specifically chose these gifts to thank Xue Yang, but there’s something for everyone else too."
"Thanking Xiao Yang?" Zhong Hailan and Xue Yuanqing were surprised. What has our son done now that we don’t know about?
"Yes, so please, accept them."
"Xiao Yang, what’s this all about?"
"Si Wen had to take her college entrance exams, so I helped out at her company for a while," Xue Yang briefly explained.
"So young and already running a company! That’s impressive."
"Auntie, Xiao Xi is the truly impressive one. She’s a hugely popular web novelist now, and her books are already being adapted for the screen."
Mrs. Zhong was impressed, though she didn’t quite grasp the details. Girls from the big city really are something else.
"By the way, where’s Xue Xing?"
"I’ll call him over," Zhong Hailan said.
Before long, Xue Xing hurried over. Seeing Si Wen, he paused for a moment before saying politely, "Sister, you’re here."
"Yes, I am. These are for your family. Take them home with you."
Xue Xing was taken aback. "I told you yesterday you didn’t need to make such a big fuss. You’re going to scare our entire family with all this."
Si Wen waved her hand dismissively. "Simplicity isn’t my style. Just take these and hand them out however you see fit."
If she weren’t worried about frightening them, she would have prepared even more valuable gifts.
"If I take these home, my mom will definitely scold me."
"Don’t worry. Just say they’re from your brother."
"Huh?" Can I really do that?
"Go on, now!"
After sending Xue Xing off, Si Wen entered Xue Yang’s home and sat on the couch. In truth, her gift-giving was strategic. The gifts weren’t so expensive as to overshadow Lin Xi, the true leading lady in this home, nor were they so cheap as to be rude.
"Do you all understand now?"
At the hub of village intelligence, the gossips were sharing insights.
Everyone shook their heads. "We don’t get it."
"She seems like she could be that kid Xue Xing’s girlfriend, but then she went into Xue Yang’s home." Who could possibly understand this?
"What are you all gathered here for?"
Suddenly, a man of about sixty appeared among the crowd.
"It’s the village chief!"
The village chief walked into the center of the group, his hands clasped behind his back.
One of the women, also around sixty, said, "It’s nothing, Chief. We just came to see if Xue Yang’s girlfriend is pretty."
"Whether she’s pretty or not is none of your business. With all this free time, you’d be better off worrying about whether your own sons can find girlfriends."
The chief’s words immediately sent everyone scattering back to their own homes. It was a sore subject. If girlfriends were so easy to find, they wouldn’t need to stake out the village entrance every day, looking for suitable unmarried young women.
The Xue family was entertaining their guest when they saw the village chief approaching. Xue Yuanqing immediately went out to greet him. "What brings you here, Village Chief?"
The village chief didn’t beat around the bush and got straight to the point. "I hear you’re here, so I came to discuss the matter of rebuilding the ancestral hall."
Hearing this, Xue Yang seemed to understand. He said to Lin Xi, "Xiao Xi, why don’t you take Si Wen upstairs first? I need to handle something."
"Alright. Si Wen, let’s go."
Si Wen nodded and followed Lin Xi upstairs.
Once upstairs, Si Wen took a look around. "Did Auntie Zhong just have this redecorated? It looks quite nice."
Although the decor wasn’t luxurious, it felt warm and suited Lin Xi’s personality perfectly. It was clear that a lot of care had gone into it.
"Don’t tell me you two slept in separate rooms last night," Si Wen asked, noticing that Lin Xi’s things were in a different spot from Xue Yang’s.
"Of course not..." Lin Xi’s cheeks flushed.
Thinking about the night before on the rooftop made her whole body tingle. They had almost... on the roof... Thankfully, Xue Yang had stopped them just in time.
"Tsk, tsk, tsk. You two are practically an old married couple. You should stop blushing at the drop of a hat," Si Wen teased, clicking her tongue.
"Si Wen, you just feel uncomfortable if you don’t tease me for a day, don’t you?"
"I heard them mention something about building an ancestral hall. What’s that about?"
"This is the first I’m hearing of it, too. I don’t know."
"Let’s go eavesdrop."
"That... that doesn’t seem right, does it?"
"Oh, come on, just a little listen. It’s not like it’ll hurt. Besides, Xue Yang’s business is your business, right? What’s wrong with staying informed about things that concern you?"
Lin Xi considered it and decided that made sense. She resolutely joined Si Wen at the top of the stairs to listen in on their conversation.
"Yuanqing, your son Xiao Yang has really become successful."
"Not at all, not at all. Xiao Yang just finished his first year of college. He’ll be starting his sophomore year in September," Xue Yuanqing said while brewing tea for the village chief.
"Stop trying to hide it from everyone. I already know that the New Energy Auto Market is your family’s business. This is a good thing. After so many years, our village has finally produced a successful young man. Our award back then wasn’t given in vain."
"Yes, yes."
Xue Yang sat to the side, silent the entire time.
The village chief grew a bit anxious. The older man was deflecting his questions like a master of Tai Chi, and the younger one wasn’t saying a word. It was difficult to get to the point.
"As I said when I came in, our village’s ancestral hall needs to be rebuilt this year. We hope your family can take the lead."
Taking the lead sounded simple, but in reality, it meant contributing the lion’s share of the cost. A contribution of that magnitude was no small matter. Anything less than several hundred thousand would be out of the question.
Xue Yuanqing’s expression soured. This is just brazen extortion! The auto market hadn’t even opened yet, and its future profitability was still uncertain. He wasn’t sure how much had been invested upfront, but it definitely wasn’t a small amount. They hadn’t even started to recoup their costs, and now this. Do they really think we’re made of money?
"Village Chief, everyone knows our family’s situation. We can’t take the lead on this."
"If your family can’t lead, then no one in the village can."
