Chapter 290: Chapter 290: Drunk

The night finally wrapped up when Lin Xia was too tipsy to carry on.

This kid gets greedy when she drinks, and the more she drinks, the greedier she gets, until she’s too drunk to stand.

"Big sis, are you okay?" Lin Yun looked at Lin Xue with concern.

Xiao Xia, for some reason, was hell-bent on having her big sister drink with her, ignoring everyone else.

"I’m fine, let’s go! I’ll carry her on my back!" Lin Xue was also a bit drunk; though she was awake, she was a little unsteady.

"Big sis, I’ll support you. Let Sun Bing carry Xiao Xia! You’re already wobbly; how can you carry someone?" Lin Yun stepped up to support Lin Xue.

Lin Xue thought it over, decided it should be fine for her brother-in-law to carry, and waved her hand in agreement, letting Lin Yun help her walk out.

They stumbled their way back home, and just as they reached the front door, Liang Mancang couldn’t hold back any longer and called out to Lin Xue. He felt that if he didn’t speak up now, he wouldn’t get another chance — after all, it was a two-month break.

"Comrade Lin Xue! Wait a minute, I have something to tell you!" Liang Mancang nervously rubbed his hands together, sweating despite the freezing weather.

Hearing this, Lin Xue, who was feeling hazy, turned around to look at Liang Mancang, nodded, though her vision was a bit blurry.

She had not meant to drink so much, knowing she had things to do today, but Xiao Xia had pushed her to drink more, and it was good liquor, which was stronger, so she couldn’t handle it.

"What do you want to say?" Lin Xue let go of Lin Yun’s hand and just looked at Liang Mancang, unsure where exactly her eyes were focusing.

"Uh, Brother Sun Bing, you guys go inside first. I just have a couple of things to say. I’ll take Lin Xue in myself in a bit!" Liang Mancang then looked at Sun Bing, who was carrying Lin Xia.

"That won’t do! I have to support my big sister, so get it out quickly!" Lin Yun asserted, refusing to leave.

"This..." Liang Mancang was in a bind.

"Go in, go in! All of you go in! I can manage to get inside myself in a moment! Hurry up and carry Xiao Xia in to sleep!" Lin Xue waved her hand.

She was a bit under the influence now, her judgment clouded.

"Big sis..." Sun Qianqian spoke up, but her drinking capacity was weak; having been coaxed into a cup by Lin Xia, she was already doing well to walk back by herself.

"It’s fine! Liang Mancang is our classmate; you think he can gobble me up? If I don’t come in in ten minutes, come out and find me!" Lin Xue assured the couple.

"Liang Mancang, can’t you say what you have to tomorrow? Does it have to be now? My big sister is drunk! And it’s so cold!" Lin Yun still didn’t want to leave her big sister alone there.

"I won’t have time tomorrow, let him speak now!" Lin Xue waved her hand, cutting off her sister.

Joking! In a bit, Brother Yuan would be back, and with the whole family to deal with, she’d be lucky to get a moment’s break, let alone have time to compare answers with Liang Mancang.

She just thought Liang Mancang hadn’t managed to compare answers with her that afternoon and was still thinking about it.

She knew Liang Mancang felt differently about her, but she was drunk now, clouded in thought.

"Alright, let’s go inside! Inside!" Sun Qianqian nudged Lin Yun, giving her a look.

Lin Yun sensed something, and with Sun Qianqian, she helped make sure her big sister was leaning safely against the doorframe before going in.

However, Sun Bing paused after stepping through the courtyard gate, not going further, while Sun Qianqian leaned against the gate, peering out.

"Hurry up and say it! What is it?" Lin Xue, a bit impatient, leaned against the wall, not even bothering with eye contact. 𝐟𝕣𝕖𝐞𝐰𝕖𝚋𝐧𝗼𝚟𝐞𝕝.𝗰𝐨𝐦

"Comrade Lin Xue, I... I..." Liang Mancang suddenly got so nervous he couldn’t get the words out.

"I honestly forgot the answers, so if it’s about that, drop it!" Lin Xue waved dismissively, "It’s freezing! I’m going in!"

"Comrade Lin Xue, I’m... it’s not about the answers, I..." Liang Mancang stumbled over his words even more.

"If you don’t speak, I’m going in!" Lin Xue had already started to walk inside.

"Comrade Lin Xue, are you going home tomorrow? What time are you leaving?" Liang Mancang mustered the courage to ask.

"Probably not heading back! But I don’t have time to compare answers tomorrow! Hurry back; don’t want you freezing to death!"

Having said her piece, Lin Xue pushed open the courtyard door and walked inside, with Lin Yun quickly coming to support her.

Seeing the others had been standing just inside the gate, Liang Mancang was glad he had not said more earlier.

Tomorrow, he decided, he’d come over first thing in the morning. Comrade Lin Xue was drunk now, so it would be better to speak once she was sober.

So he did not dwell on it and left once the gate had closed behind him.

After settling Lin Xia down, the Sun siblings were about to head back to school when Lin Xue waved them to stay over.

The only spare room just had enough for Sun Qianqian to stay with Lin Yun.

Earlier, she had checked with Zhang Yuan in the space; he said the train was delayed and might only arrive around midnight. Seeing his little wife drunk, reeking of alcohol, he decided not to come over in the middle of the night. Instead, he’d find a guesthouse for the family and wait till morning.

He also grilled her on why she drank so much.

Lin Xue explained truthfully that it all began because a classmate wanted to compare answers and invited them to dinner, but Xiao Xia went wild, insisting on drinking with her, and that’s how it came to this.

Zhang Yuan couldn’t stay long and left quickly, although he’d learned the reason Xiao Xia drank with his wife.

It was all because he’d neglected to write to his little sister-in-law!

They meet in the space, but outsiders don’t know, so it was expected the little sister-in-law would overthink. He’d have to make amends.

On the train, the ones causing a ruckus were Lin Cuifen and her daughter. It seemed like there was always something happening, but Zhang Yuan had no need to intervene.

Zhang Haijun took charge; the journey was enough of a hardship.

"Mom, I’m so tired, but it’s so cold that I can’t sleep! I’m sore all over; when will we get there? What a dump! Worse than the village where I did my volunteer work!" Zhang Ting complained for the nth time, curled up with a quilt on the bed, looking displeased.

"Who knows, mom’s arm is getting stiff from the wind, hurting badly! Hang in there!" Lin Cuifen was at a loss faced with her daughter’s constant complaints.

She looked at Zhang Haijun, giving him a very aggrieved look, but Zhang Haijun was done even looking at her.

This whole journey, whenever Lin Cuifen looked at him like that, there was always a task behind it, and he wasn’t willing to deal with it anymore. Compared to his two sons, this mother-daughter pair was indeed delicate and needy. They couldn’t even get used to the train’s boxed meals and whined about hunger, but their eldest son just wouldn’t care.

He’d caught sight of Xiao Yuan snacking occasionally, but there wasn’t much he could do. They were not in the same compartment; he and the mother-daughter were in one, and the other five were in another, making it inconvenient.

He had asked, but Xiao Yuan claimed there was nothing more. What was he to do?

With Xiao Yuan around, Tingting didn’t dare to whine and demand food from the old lady.

The old lady simply said, "Isn’t there a boxed meal provided on the train for every meal? How can you still be hungry?"

This put Zhang Haijun in a very awkward spot, but his wife didn’t get it; she just kept complaining to him.

Complaints about too much dowry or saying some country girl wasn’t worthy and the like.

It puzzled him. The dowry didn’t come from him, the father, but the stepmother kept nagging about it anyway.

Could she be thinking of taking the dowry for herself? Even if she dared, he wouldn’t. If the old man found out, there would be hell to pay.
