Reincarnation in the 60s: My Spatial Supermarket Brings Forth Wealth-Chapter 288: Mind Your Behavior in Public
A whole bunch of Zhang Yuan’s family got on the train, and over on Lin Xue’s side, the exams had already begun.
For Lin Xue, exams were a walk in the park. As the top student in her grade, she couldn’t have felt more at ease.
The level of education in this era was simply more basic than in later times. She handled it easily and happily, but that wasn’t the case for everyone.
"Comrade Lin Xue, can we compare answers? The questions were so hard; I’m really anxious!" After the exam, while waiting for the teacher to announce the holiday so they could go home, a dejected Liang Mancang came back and said this to his seatmate Lin Xue.
"I can’t remember my answers, so we can’t compare! The exam’s over, what’s the point of comparing? Better to go home happy, young man!" Lin Xue waved him off.
She couldn’t be bothered to compare answers, plus the little bit of unusualness about Liang Mancang made her want to avoid interacting with him more than necessary, to save herself some trouble.
"Oh... okay then!" Liang Mancang couldn’t help but nod with disappointment and sat down.
When the teacher announced the holiday, it was already afternoon. Many students couldn’t go home at all, but Liang Mancang’s family lived in the city, so he could be home in no time.
The Lin sisters took their bicycles from the garage to go home, and saw Liang Mancang standing outside the garage with his bicycle, waving as soon as he saw them.
"Comrade Lin Xue, Comrade Lin Xia, Comrade Lin Yun!" He greeted each of them.
"Comrade Liang Mancang, why aren’t you going home?" Lin Xue, as his seatmate, felt it wasn’t polite not to greet him.
But Liang Mancang was really strange. After being classmates for so long, he still called everyone "comrade." Lin Xue just went along with it, finding it funny.
"Well, since the exam’s over and we’re on break, I thought, we’ve been seatmates for so long, now that it’s the holiday, I’d like to treat you to a meal!" Liang Mancang finally voiced what he’d been pondering for a long time.
"Liang Mancang, you’re only treating the eldest sister to a meal? What about us?" Lin Xia chimed in quickly. She’s a bit rough around the edges, but she could tell.
Liang Mancang treated the eldest sister differently from others. The six of them got along well largely because Liang Mancang got along well with Sun Bing; otherwise, he wouldn’t have been part of the group.
Even though there was no word from the eldest brother-in-law yet, the two were already engaged. The eldest sister had no interest in Liang Mancang, but she couldn’t just stand by silently.
"Yeah, what about us?" Lin Yun also chimed in with her sister.
"How could that be? The six of us, Sun Bing will be joining soon, with his sister!" Liang Mancang waved his hands.
"Oh... that’s fine! We’re all classmates. You can’t just consider your seatmate!" Lin Xia nodded, seemingly satisfied with a smile.
Liang Mancang was sweating inside. Gosh, how can these girls speak so sharply? He couldn’t handle it.
Not long after, the Sun Bing siblings arrived. They stayed in the dorm, so they went to pack their bags to catch the early train home the next morning.
"Let’s go! It’s almost meal time! Let’s eat at the State-Owned Restaurant!" Liang Mancang said as he greeted Sun Bing and walked their bikes out of the school gate. Once Sun Bing came over, he wasn’t so nervous anymore.
"Brother Liang, not bad! You’re treating us to the State-Owned Restaurant? I thought it’d just be the school cafeteria!" Sun Bing laughed heartily.
"No way!" Liang Mancang replied absentmindedly, distracted by his own thoughts after Sun Bing spoke.
When the six of them arrived at the State-Owned Restaurant, it was just meal time, and there were lots of people, bustling and noisy.
Liang Mancang booked a private room, and the table was big enough, although it was just a small partitioned space. Still, it was better than sitting outside with so many people.
"Order whatever you want! Don’t be shy!" Liang Mancang sat down, making a generous gesture.
But this guy seemed to have misunderstood something about the State-Owned Restaurant.
Lin Xue mentally griped. She wanted to eat garlic butter lobster tail, spicy chicken wings... so many things. But clearly, they could’ve made such things at home, whereas here, there wasn’t much to eat at all. Just a few dishes: potatoes, dry tofu... cabbage and radish... with hardly any meat to be seen.
"Brother Liang, no worries, just order everything available today!" Sun Bing noticed the girls mentally grumbling and chipped in with a suggestion.
The two siblings often dined at small western-style buildings and knew the sisters’ meals couldn’t be matched by the State-Owned Restaurant. Still, they couldn’t refuse Liang Mancang’s invitation, so the five of them went along, mentally prepared for a less-than-appetizing meal today.
The Sun Bing siblings were alright with it, being used to eating at the school cafeteria, so the State-Owned Restaurant was quite good in comparison.
But for the three sisters, it was truly hard to swallow.
Lin Xia, being more of a meat eater, used to not mind when the family was poor and even wild vegetable porridge was hard to come by. But after conditions improved, if she could eat meat, she’d eat nothing else.
Seeing today’s menu, with potato stewed with cabbage, stir-fried dry tofu, stir-fried bean sprouts... not a single bit of meat, Lin Xia felt she was almost full just looking at it.
"Come on, pour it up! No one hold back, this is good wine!" Liang Mancang ordered the dishes, while Sun Bing helped bring them over. There were mixed-grain steamed buns and highland barley rice, but the girls didn’t want that; they only asked for buns.
Then Liang Mancang took out a bottle of wine from his bag, but it was bulk wine, poured into a wine bottle.
Once a cup was placed in front of Lin Xue, she recognized it as the bulk white wine from her own stash.
Does Liang Mancang’s family also buy from the black market? Looks like his family’s not as bad as he makes it out to be.
This wine wasn’t a necessity. The fact that her family could buy it on the black market meant they had some money.
But that’s none of her business, so she just took a sip, having little appetite today.
If anyone in her family was the pickiest eater, it had to be her. Her other siblings could eat coarse grains, but she was the one who least liked them. Lin Xia seemed to have a craving, but when hungry, she would eat anything.
"Comrade Lin Xue, eat something before drinking, or it’ll harm your body!" Liang Mancang quickly reminded when he saw Lin Xue start drinking as soon as the wine was poured.
Lin Xia saw this, looked up at her second sister, and saw that the second sister was indeed saying something to Sun Bing. She fiercely kicked her second sister under the table and, when Lin Yun looked up, quickly gestured to her to be more reserved and to look at their elder sister!
You have to admit, this little girl had an over-the-top sense of observation, thinking that just because the elder sister drank when she saw the wine, her second sister and Sun Bing must have provoked her, reminding her of her fiancé and thus putting her in a bad mood.
Lin Yun indeed sat up straight and stopped paying attention to Sun Bing, then started eating little by little.
Lin Xue saw her two sisters’ actions and didn’t catch on, thinking Xiao Xia was just reminding Xiao Yun to mind their manners in public.
She smiled, didn’t respond, and answered Liang Mancang, "It’s alright, a bit of wine’s nothing."
Then she took another sip, thinking that Brother Yuan and his family should arrive a little past ten tonight, and she needed to prepare well before going back.
She couldn’t go to the station to meet them, so she’d have to prepare well for when Zhang Yuan brought his family over.
