Chapter 250: Chapter 250: A Pleasant Surprise

"Xiao Yun, bring some snacks over to Xiao Mei. We need to start cooking!" Lin Xue instructed her little sister.

"Got it, big sis, I was just about to go! But big sis, did you notice? Xiao Mei doesn’t seem to talk to us like she used to!" Lin Yun whispered to her older sister.

The two were in the main kitchen, while everyone else was in the living room, so they spoke very quietly to avoid being overheard.

"Hmm, your cousin Xiao Mei might be in a bad mood. That old hag almost sold her off, and only stopped because Second Uncle paid up, you know that! It’s understandable she’s a bit shaken. Grandma said the suitor the old hag introduced was both old and ugly! Alright, hurry and take the snacks over, then talk to her properly!" Lin Xue pushed her sister out.

The snacks they ate were kept in their own rooms; the adults at home didn’t eat stuff like that, so they wouldn’t be taken out.

Lin Xue started cooking with Lin Xia and Lin Shuang.

Nothing particularly special, mainly focusing on meat dishes.

The seafood was mostly gone except for large prawns, as the rest had been polished off by several others, leaving just this one seafood dish. Lin Xue also prepared sweet-and-sour fish, braised pork belly, dried beans and ribs stew, chicken and mushroom stew, and dry-fried duck meat.

The portions were generous, split between two tables — one for the adults and one for the younger generation.

Then she steamed two large pots of dumplings, preferring steamed ones herself, feeling they smelled better steamed.

The dumplings had three kinds of fillings: pork and sauerkraut, beef and radish, and chicken and mushroom. However, today they only steamed the pork and sauerkraut and beef and radish fillings.

For no reason other than the two gluttonous and possessive little ones refusing to eat the chicken ones, wanting to keep them for themselves.

With six major dishes fearing it’d be too greasy, Lin Xue mixed a cold dish for seven dishes, feeling odd with an odd number, so she opened a few canned fruits to add to the plate for a tally, mixing salty and sweet, which she quite enjoyed.

By the time all the dishes were done, it was almost time for lunch. Being winter, the days were short, and they usually didn’t eat lunch, but it was New Year’s and the home had guests.

Once the two tables were set, and the food was served, Bai Dajiang and his wife were completely dumbfounded.

This... they’ve never had such a good spread from birth till now. All their New Year’s meals combined couldn’t compare to this feast.

Bai Dajiang grew even more embarrassed. Should he have come? How could this be okay? Is the elder brother’s family using all their good fare to host them?

They only brought a few meager gifts over, feeling embarrassed to eat.

In truth, those were the best things their family could bring out, but compared to this, it was just nothing to look at.

Just then, Lin Daliang returned from work, and Wang Yongsheng followed.

In the morning, Niu Yingying hadn’t even been allowed to go back to the dorm; she stayed on the warm bed in Wang Cuihua’s room, playing with the two kids, she was having so much fun.

With the whole family gathered, they sat at the table, but Bai Dajiang and his wife held their chopsticks, not knowing where to start, feeling a bit embarrassed to pick anything up.

"Come, second brother, have a drink with your big bro. I have to work this afternoon, so I can’t drink too much, but you shouldn’t hold back! Drink more!" Lin Daliang poured his brother a drink, as they were familiar, working together regularly, even if not blood-related, they were still cousins.

"Big brother, just a little, I have to drive the ox cart back later! Can’t drink too much!" Bai Dajiang held up his cup.

"Drink more. If not, stay over for the night, don’t rush back!" Grandpa Wang chimed in from the side.

Lin Daliang first poured his father-in-law a drink, already having taken a sip and enjoying it with blissful eyes. 𝑓𝑟𝑒𝘦𝓌𝑒𝑏𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝘭.𝒸𝘰𝑚

He used to not dare imagine having alcohol readily available to drink whenever he wanted, or being able to eat fish and meat every day till full, now feeling somewhat like he’s floating.

"Old man, drink less! You already drank this morning!" Li Xiuying said worriedly.

"No worries, this wine tastes great and doesn’t even affect my head!" Grandpa Wang waved it off, loving his drink.

"Hahaha..."

Everyone in the room laughed at the sight of Grandpa Wang enjoying his drink, as he was once quite a serious old man, now resembling a child.

Lin Xue noticed the siblings were similarly a bit reserved, unsure about serving themselves, so she quickly gave her younger siblings a look.

The youngsters understood her glance well. Once it passed, they promptly and enthusiastically served food to the three, piling it in their bowls resembling little mountains.

"Sister and brother, make sure to finish all the food in your bowls, otherwise it’ll be wasteful!" Lin Shuang cutely added.

Lin Xue covered her face; this little girl really could switch between salty and sweet, able to speak well.

At the other table, her parents diligently served Second Uncle and Aunt, while this table’s little ones were equally attentive.

And so, the whole family was stuffed to the brim, experiencing their first wonderfully delicious and immensely filling meal.

After the meal, Wu Zhaodi couldn’t sit still and helped clear the table before finally settling in the living room.

Lin Daliang and Wang Yongsheng weren’t due to start work yet, so were still around.

Even though Lin Daliang’s bicycle had been borrowed and not returned by Bai Dajiang, the little ones at home all had bikes, so he could ride any of theirs.

Wang Yongsheng used Zhang Yuan’s bicycle, which was given to him upon Zhang Yuan’s departure.

Thus the two were in no rush to leave, and with Bai Dajiang’s family visiting for the new year, they all chatted together.

"Second uncle, take this!" Lin Xue pulled a piece of paper from her pocket to hand Bai Dajiang.

"What’s this?" Bai Dajiang accepted and looked at it, but unable to read, couldn’t understand and looked up at Lin Xue.

"This is a temporary job quota at the textiles factory I arranged for Xiao Mei. The factory opens after the fifteenth; take this back, have the brigade leader sign and stamp it, then take it to the commune to get signed and stamped! Bring Xiao Mei to the textiles factory for reporting!" Lin Xue patiently explained the process.

"What? Quota at the textiles factory?" Bai Dajiang suddenly stood up, embarrassingly trembling slightly with excitement.

Wu Zhaodi reacted similarly, standing up in disbelief, staring at Lin Xue without averting her gaze.

White Rumei responded the most noticeably, slowly raising her head to see the paper in her father’s hand. Able to read after finishing first grade, she saw the recruitment indicator words, her expression shifting from lethargic and hollow to energized and vibrant.

"I originally wanted to secure a permanent position, but they said our Xiao Mei’s age didn’t qualify, so she’ll have to start as a temporary worker. But don’t worry, with hard work, she’ll have a promising future!" Lin Xue encouraged Xiao Mei with a look, watching as she perked up, relaxed with relief seeing her return to her lively self.

"Thank you, big sis!" Bai Rumei’s voice cracked with emotion, unable to control her tone in front of everyone.

No one could understand her internal turmoil, as the family was finally getting better, yet because of her, the grandmother took thirty bucks. She could see her parents’ worried faces.

But she had been stuck overthinking, believing her parents fretted over the thirty bucks, unaware it was due to their concern for her.
