Chapter 236: Chapter 236: Sneaking a Chicken Drumstick

The next day, Wang Zhiyong really came over at the crack of dawn. When he arrived, nobody else was up yet except for Wang Cuihua and Bai Xianglan, the mother-in-law and daughter-in-law pair.

Seeing Wang Zhiyong driving over in a tractor, Wang Cuihua hurried to wake up the children.

The two brothers who were going with their older sister today jumped out of bed instantly, quickly washing up and getting dressed.

Without any means of transportation, going out was inconvenient, and the children who had never been to places farther away were thrilled to hear they were going to the neighboring commune.

Lin Xue also quickly got up, though she hadn’t had enough sleep. She had been pondering things late into the night and had secretly taken out Xiao Bai for a bit. A vehicle Zhang Yuan had confiscated for research, as she wanted to line up a whole row of Xiao Bai in the warehouse, so whenever she had the chance, she’d sneak out the newest addition to her collection. This way, she could complete her set.

Four Xiao Bai a month amounts to forty-eight in a year, which is quite considerable.

She also organized the spices needed for making pickles, mostly using crushed dried chili peppers. The vegetable garden should have grown the extremely spicy sky-facing chilies. She planned to have them dried and ground into powder then. Everything could be self-sustained.

"Xiao Xue! Quit dawdling and hurry out, your mom packed some cured meat and food for your little aunt! If you three can’t find the place when you go, make sure to ask for directions. Your little uncle is called Feng Zhuangzhu, don’t forget!" Wang Cuihua urged Lin Xue anxiously. Going out at this time felt like rushing to market, full of excitement and haste.

"Alright, I know, Mom! I’m coming! Did you make breakfast? Going without breakfast leaves me drained!" Lin Xue had a habit of feeling lethargic all day if she didn’t eat breakfast.

"Made it, made it! Big white steamed buns! Take a few extra with you for the road! Mom also packed some salted pickled daikon for you to eat with the buns!" Wang Cuihua fussed as she packed a large cloth bag full of steamed buns and pickled daikon.

Lin Xue actually liked these pickled daikons quite a lot. They were made by drying the autumn-pickled mustard greens, soaking and cleaning them, then boiling them in soy sauce, and finally re-drying and steaming them.

Not only did they look appetizing, but they also tasted great, with oil oozing out from inside.

Because Lin Xue liked them, many pickled daikons from her second aunt’s house were sent over, all made by Wang Cuihua for the kids to eat.

Yesterday afternoon, Lin Xue took a special trip to town and bought back a lot of things—though technically she got them from the supermarket.

Among them were brown sugar, millet, cookies, candies, and a piece of cloth enough to make Xiao Aunt a new set of clothes.

However, she mentioned it was for Xiao Aunt, so the little ones didn’t bother searching through it. Perfect timing for her to sneak out a chicken leg from the package to eat during the tractor ride.

The three siblings hurried onto the vehicle, and as Wang Cuihua loaded up her prepared ten catties of rice, over ten scented melons, and a jar of cured meat, the tractor chugged towards Xiangyang Commune.

Lin Xue knew her mom, Wang Cuihua, wouldn’t listen even if she spoke up, so she didn’t bother saying anything. After all, ten catties of rice didn’t mean much to them, and once they delivered it, they’d just return, without attracting too much attention.

Although ten catties of rice might be more precious than gold to other families, if Xiao Aunt could recover and have a baby, taking this risk would be worth it.

Xiao Aunt was kind to her mom, providing no significant help but never bullying her, even secretly helping Wang Cuihua with things and at times sparing bits of her own food ration for the original little one to eat.

Saintly Wang Cuihua could even forgive those who beat, scolded, and bullied her, so surely she’d go to great lengths for a kind sister-in-law. Last time she came back, seeing her sister-in-law not having a good life and struggling to conceive, who knows how many secret tears she’d shed.

Once they left the village, there were hardly any people on the road. Those who fetched water to irrigate the fields hadn’t started work yet, and the sun was just rising.

The two younger brothers had already started eating their steamed buns, enjoying the feeling of eating on the moving tractor, their excitement palpable as they looked around.

Lin Xue hurriedly turned around to rummage through the package, quickly pulling out three chicken legs she had gotten from the supermarket’s deli section and handed them to her two brothers.

"Hurry, eat up!" she urged, worried Wang Zhiyong driving in the front would catch the scent.

Even though the rumbling of the tractor was loud, it couldn’t mask the smell.

"Big Sis, where did you get these chicken legs? They’re huge!" Little Chuan received the chicken leg with utmost delight.

"I bought them from town yesterday. One for each of us! Hurry and eat! Have it with the buns! Be careful not to choke!" With that, Lin Xue started eating hers.

Chatting along the way, they watched the drought-stricken crops. Sleeping was impossible due to the bumpy ride.

Amidst the chatter of the two brothers, they reached Xiangyang Commune.

Lin Xue watched with amusement as her eldest brother, who was usually taciturn, became animated and talkative.

No matter how steady and mature one is, age has its say, and encountering something you like still turns you into a child.

"Uncle Zhiyong, we’ll first drop by my little aunt’s house to deliver some stuff before heading to the brick factory. Wait here a moment while I ask for directions!" Lin Xue requested as Wang Zhiyong pulled over, and she quickly got off.

She patted her chest, relieved after the bumpy ride, thankful she didn’t get motion sickness.

Glancing at her two brothers, she noticed, to her amazement, they were perfectly fine, still gazing around.

"Alright, go ahead!" Wang Zhiyong nodded.

Lin Shan, upon hearing his big sister talking to Wang Zhiyong, turned his attention to him, watching intently. When brother-in-law left, he’d entrusted his big sister to him, and he couldn’t let down his guard, needing to keep an eye on Wang Zhiyong.

His big sister was getting more beautiful, and the task felt increasingly daunting.

Walking some distance, Lin Xue encountered someone who actually knew where her little aunt lived. Seeing they arrived by tractor, he was exceedingly friendly, offering to guide them.

She then let him join them on the tractor, directing them along the way.

It wasn’t that she lacked awareness, but given the relative safety of the era and the genuine simplicity of farming folk, there was little to worry about.

The man left after guiding them, having only wanted a ride on the tractor.

They arrived in the morning after ten, a time when everyone should have been out working. Assuming he was home as expected, they had anticipated it, but not that upon entering the courtyard, their little aunt would come out to greet them.

"Oh my, Xiao Xue, Xiao Shan, Little Chuan, what brings you here? Come in, come in!" Bai Xiaomei, hearing the tractor’s noise, came out for a look and found her three nieces and nephews had arrived.

Happily, she ushered them into the house.

Her family had never come to visit her before. Fortunately, her in-laws weren’t the fault-finding type; otherwise, she wouldn’t even be able to lift her head.

"Little Aunt, you’re not heading out to work? We were worried you might not be home." Lin Xue said as she followed her inside.

The two brothers tightly followed their sister, and behind them, Wang Zhiyong also went in.

Finally able to have a drink and rest a bit, the heat had made them thirsty long before.
