Reincarnated with an SSS-rank Tamer System: My Harem of Villainesses-Chapter 64 – Chaos and Coordination
The golem roared as its paw descended toward Gareth, who barely managed to jump to the side before the impact shattered the ground where he had been standing.
Fragments of rock shot out in every direction, and one of them struck Fernis in the shoulder as he tried to approach from the right flank.
"Damn it, be more careful!" Fernis shouted as he staggered backward.
"It’s not my fault you’re in the way!" Gareth replied irritably.
Adam ran toward the creature with his sword raised, searching for an opening in its defence. He had brought the weapon as part of the standard equipment for the mission, and now he was grateful he had.
However, when he barely managed to land a blow against one of the golem’s hind legs, the rock that made up its body proved far more resistant than expected.
The blade bounced off with a metallic sound that vibrated through his arms, and he had to retreat quickly when the beast’s tail swept the air toward him.
From a distance, Sophía launched a burst of ice that struck the golem’s side.
The crystals scattered across its stone armour, but the damage was minimal. The creature turned toward her, and from its mouth emerged a beam of crimson energy that forced the elf to throw herself to the ground to avoid it.
"Watch out!" Adam shouted, though the warning came too late.
The beam grazed past Sophía and continued its trajectory until it struck near where Lihua was preparing a wind attack.
The explosion made her lose concentration, and the spell she had been forming dissipated into the air.
"Control your attacks!" Lihua snapped at Sophía angrily.
"I didn’t fire that, the beast did!"
"Then stop provoking it toward where I am!"
Adam gritted his teeth as he dodged another swing of the tail. The situation was an absolute disaster.
Even though he had given clear instructions before they began, no one was following them.
Gareth attacked without paying attention to where the others were. Fernis was trying to show off with elaborate movements instead of looking for the cracks like Adam had asked.
Sophía was casting spells without coordinating with Lihua. And Lihua... well, Lihua was doing whatever she wanted, as always.
’This isn’t working,’ Adam thought as he rolled across the ground to avoid a stomp. ’They’re going to kill each other before the beast does.’
The golem raised both of its front legs and brought them down with tremendous force. The impact generated a shockwave that shook the entire chamber, and Adam had to drive his sword into the ground to keep from being thrown away.
When the dust settled, he saw that Gareth had been knocked several metres back, and that Fernis was bleeding from a cut on his forehead.
"We need—!" Adam began to shout, but his words were interrupted by another roar from the creature.
This time, the golem opened its jaws and fired multiple beams of energy in rapid succession. The projectiles flew in every direction, forcing the group to scatter chaotically.
Adam jumped behind a rock formation, Sophía conjured a shield of ice that barely withstood the impact, and Lihua used her wind magic to deflect two of the beams before they could reach her.
But Gareth was not as fast.
One of the projectiles struck him directly in the chest as he tried to raise his spear. 𝑓𝑟ℯ𝘦𝓌𝘦𝘣𝑛𝑜𝓋𝑒𝓁.𝑐ℴ𝓂
The impact lifted him off the ground as if he were a doll, and his body was hurled backward at a terrifying speed.
Adam watched as his companion tore through the air in a brutal trajectory, unable to do anything to stop it.
The sound was horrible.
A dull crack echoed through the chamber when Gareth slammed into the stone wall. The rock fractured under the force of the blow, and his body remained embedded in the surface as if someone had deliberately lodged him there.
His arms hung limply at his sides, the spear had fallen to the ground several metres below, and his head was tilted forward.
"Gareth!" Fernis shouted, genuine panic in his voice.
Everyone stopped attacking. Even the golem seemed to pause, as if evaluating the result of its attack.
The beast’s red eyes glowed with something that might have been satisfaction, though it was impossible to know for sure.
Adam looked toward Lihua, and their eyes met in the middle of the chaos. He didn’t need to say anything, because she was already moving.
The young woman ran toward where Gareth remained embedded in the rock, with the wind swirling around her to propel her faster.
Within seconds she reached him and began examining him while her hands glowed with a greenish light.
"He’s alive!" Lihua announced after a few seconds. "But I need time to heal him!"
Adam nodded and turned toward the others.
"Fernis, Sophía, I need you to keep that thing busy!" he ordered as he ran toward a position closer to the golem. "Don’t try to hurt it, just distract it while Lihua works!"
This time, neither of them protested. Fernis dashed toward the creature’s left flank with his sword raised, while Sophía began conjuring ice spells from a distance.
The golem roared and turned toward them, momentarily distracted from Lihua and Gareth.
Adam took advantage of the opportunity to approach where the improvised healer was. Lihua had her hands over Gareth’s chest, and the green light pulsed with each passing second. The blond young man’s face was still pale, but his breathing had stabilised.
"How much time do you need?" Adam asked without taking his eyes off the golem.
"One more minute," Lihua replied, her voice tense with concentration. "Maybe two."
Adam nodded and positioned himself between her and the beast, ready to intercept any attack that came their way.
Behind him, he could hear Fernis shouting and the bursts of Sophía’s spells as they kept the golem occupied.
The longest seconds of his life passed.
When Lihua finally removed her hands, Gareth coughed violently and his eyes snapped open.
The colour had returned to his face, and although he still looked dazed, he was clearly out of danger.
"What... what happened?" he murmured as he tried to move.
"I’ll explain later," Adam replied before turning toward the rest of the group. "Everyone, to me! Now!"
Fernis and Sophía retreated toward where the others were, dodging one last strike from the golem before regrouping.
The creature roared in frustration, but it did not pursue them immediately. It seemed to be evaluating the situation, deciding what its next move would be.
Adam used that brief moment to speak quickly.
"Listen, what we were doing isn’t working," he said as he looked at all of them. "We’re getting in each other’s way, and that thing is too strong to fight like this. We need real coordination."
"And what do you suggest?" Sophía asked with a frown.
"Fernis, you and Gareth attack together on the right flank. He distracts it with the spear, you look for the cracks. Lihua, I need you to support Fernis with your wind... you can increase the speed and power of his attacks, right?"
Lihua nodded slowly, and a smile began to form on her lips.
"Sophía, you and I take the left. You attack from a distance, I move in when I see an opening. And when someone finds a weak point, we all focus our attacks there."
The group exchanged glances for a moment. There was doubt in their eyes, that was obvious, but there was also something else. Something that hadn’t been there before.
Understanding.
Gareth stood up with a grunt, retrieving his spear from the ground.
"Let’s do it," he said, his voice hoarse but determined.
Fernis nodded without saying anything, and Sophía did the same. Lihua, for her part, gave Adam one last look before taking her position.
"Second round," she murmured with anticipation.
The golem roared, and the group prepared to attack.
This time, as a team.
