Reincarnated To Evolve My Bee Empire-Chapter 243: See your death coming

Something was taking off the ground. At first, I couldn't make its silhouette out next to the forest around: the thing was green and red in exact shades of tree leaves, and blended perfectly with the background even when moving.

Then it flew higher and I could make it out properly: a twenty-meter-long (with half of it being the tail) feathered lizard with wings. Still not a bird, though—the shape of its body was too lizard-like, with a wide neck, tubular torso and almost disproportionately tiny paws.

There was also its status.

*This* was the thing that attacked us earlier!

A terrifyingly evolved skink—the second parent of these eggs in the burrow!

When my eyes scanned the traits of the skink, all questions about how it got past the scouts disappeared entirely.

'Camouflage VIII', 'Weak Smell V', 'Quiet Step V'… This skink had all the traits to sneak around despite its size. And its other traits were evolved as if specifically to counter the bees' strongest sides.

Actually, not "as if", it was definitely tailor-evolved to counter bees' strong points! Perhaps it was even instructed to attack me specifically—or maybe I was just unlucky.

Either way, it was flying after us.

"We lured the monster out!" the Sergeant Beemarine of my group shouted victoriously. "Prepare to attack and sting the beast!"

"No, wait!" I stopped her with a gesture of my golden spear. "Our venom is useless against it. Prepare to dodge its tongue or cut it! But better dodge… Destroyer, work with the rest."

I was so glad now that I never left the hive without my spear and my Forever Greatest armor. Electrocution could be the only thing that could take this thing!

At the same time, I hurriedly told the system to change my title to the 'Homeland Protector'. Immediately, its 10% bonus to strength and stamina on owned territories took action, and the surrounding bees looked slightly more energetic.

"Yes, Father!" the Sergeant Beemarine shouted. "Knives out, everybody! Spread around!"

Destroyer echoed the same commands, except she, and two other Beemarines, created a loose triangle around me.

The skink opened its mouth, showing a blue tongue inside, surrounded by a row of large triangular teeth. As I predicted, it wanted to shoot it and catch more bees—same as before. The beast was just big enough to swallow a bee whole.

Of course, with only 'Flight I' and its size, the skink was slower than me—but the Beemarines with me were from earlier generations. They only had regular flight genes, and since they were smaller, the skink would catch up with them quickly.

We had to accept the battle! For the girls' sakes, not mine. I could still escape…

The skink flew right at us, swooping closer. When it was thirty meters away, its blue tongue shot out like an arrow toward the closest bee around.

This time, though, we saw the tongue's approach from far away. The attacked Beemarine yelped and spun around, evading the attack, although missing the tongue with her combat knife.

I exhaled with relief—until I saw the skink still flying right at us, about to strike at us with its teeth, claws, and maybe even the long, whip-like tail.

"Surround it! Try to stab under the feathers!" I shouted, flying out of the direct way of the beast.

The next moment, it crashed into our formation like a sledgehammer. Its beating wings threw Beemarines aside (without heavy injuries, thankfully). The skink was flying like a barrel with wings, but the movements of its mouth and claws were agile and precise.

Although all Beemarines got away from the sharp parts of the skink's body, it shot out its tongue again. At this distance, dodging was impossible—with a shout, another bee was pulled into the skink's mouth.

But instead of swallowing it, the skink just closed its jaws with a snap. Blood poured out, mixing with the red of its snout feathers; then, the skink opened its mouth again and just let the mangled body fall out.

My eyes widened when I saw this, and a chill went through my entire body, turning into a boiling rage a moment later.

The bloodied girl, with her armor and body torn by teeth in many places, with her wings cut too much to fly… The system status still showed that she was alive when she began her fall.

She had 1 health left!

But that number turned to 0 before she even landed.

The skink wasn't even killing us for food. Perhaps it must've eaten the first two—or I'd smell their blood despite not seeing the hunter—but now it was just doing it for the sake of it.

Around me, other Beemarines shouted orders and battlecries as they charged at the skink with their weapons: knives and hammers. However, the skink was flying past them, and only a few managed to grab onto it.

It wasn't escaping, though—just preparing for another go.

"I won't let you get away with this!" I shouted, charging after it at 60% of my full speed. A moment later, my triangle of bodyguards caught up.

In an instant, I caught up with the creature and grabbed at the feathers on its forehead; but its bulging eyes focused on me as fast as I got there. My bodyguards spread around, raising their knives with determined expressions.

"Keep staring," I sneered at the skink, raising my spear. "Then you will see your death coming. Girls, don't get too close!"

The electrical charge surged in me. A single stab in the eye will fry this small thing's brain.

But before I could strike, the skink lurched mid-flight and its tail flew at me with a speed of an actual whip lash.
