Chapter 9: Isn't he just a human?!!

Hitoshi stumbled out of the dense bush, swatting stubborn leaves off his hair and sleeves. "Not here either, just where is she anyways....." he grumbled, puffing out his cheeks in frustration. His sandals squelched against damp grass as he dusted off the remaining foliage clinging to his clothes. "I think we've looked everywhere, No. 4!"

" We checked the servant quarters, all those twisty hallways on the first floor and even those creepy corridors... ugh." He shuddered at the memory of the strange undead creatures they had passed along the way.

Zombies with milky white eyes had groaned and dragged their somewhat decayed limbs past him.

Sights of Specters and ghosts hovering soundlessly above the cold, stone floors, their corporeal yet semi transparent forms flickering like candlelight.

Ghouls with fang filled jaws that conversed calmly as they chatted with each other in passing disputes, and multiple Wraiths cloaked in shadows who whispered unsettling words into the wind.

' Just why on earth did I end up in such a spooky place..." When recalling all those things, he couldn't help but think that even Skeleton No. 4, plain and bony as he was, seemed downright pleasant by comparison.

Hitoshi grimaced. ' Why does it seem like everyone here looks like they could eat me whenever they felt like it? ' But at the thought of a beautiful frosty faced maid with raven black hair, a light smile emerged on his cute little face. " We'll at least not everyone" he mumbled softly.

Skeleton No. 4 didn't bother saying anything nor did he feel like comforting him, instead his flaming green eyes were busy scanning the grounds like one who was completely focused on finding a really precious artifact as if his life depended on it.

His expression was, unsurprisingly, as plain as bones could be, but Hitoshi convinced himself the skeleton was probably worried.

Trying to be encouraging, Hitoshi puffed up his chest and declared, "Don't worry, No. 4!, I promise We'll find her no matter what!"

Just as the words left his mouth, he sneezed violently, nearly doubling over from the force of it. "Achoo!"

' Huh...what was that about.' Hitoshi thought, using his wrist to wipe his nose.

Before he could fully recover, glowing blue screens popped up before his eyes in rapid succession.

The flood of notifications left Hitoshi slack-jawed, not knowing that they were supplied by Eri Onee-san who had discovered his little handy work back at the scullery.

"Huh?" he muttered, blinking his adorable big blue eyes at the shimmering text floating midair. When he suddenly thought of his status window, it materialized before his eyes, displaying his current progress:

His lips twisted into a pout as he scrutinized the bizarre skill names again. "Who even comes up with this stuff?" he muttered, cringing at the overly cutesy title Admiral Squeaky Fingers.

Before he could dwell further, Skeleton No. 4's fiery gaze fixed on him with unsettling intensity. " Are you done staring into the distance, if so then hurry it up, we still got an heiress to find remember..."

"Uh... yeah, yeah! Let's keep looking," Hitoshi stammered, clearing his throat and straightening up. "Maybe she's around the back of the estate, I remember we haven't checked there yet!."

Skeleton No. 4 nodded silently and turned to lead the way. Hitoshi jogged to catch up, the soft crunch of grass under his foot, filling the quiet air.

As they walked side by side, Hitoshi's curiosity got the better of him. "Hey, No. 4, what's this Young Miss even like anyway?"

" You've been acting kinda strange everytime you mentioned her...is there something wrong with her or something?."

' is this boy insane?!!! ' The skeleton suddenly felt as if the child beside him was beyond fearless!, to suddenly dare to imply that the Countess's daughter was defective was such a bold claim!.

His head rapidly shifted left and right, as if looking out for anyone who might've heard them, when he saw a few other servants not to far away, his teeth began chattering in fear.

At that moment, Skeleton No 4's little soul flame was flickering uncontrollably like a trembling rat before a viscous cat.

He stared at the Servants while trembling, only When he saw non of them reacting as if they hadn't heard the little human boy did he let out a rare sigh of relief before glancing back at the cute little boy beside him, who was currently staring at him with a curious gaze, as if expecting his answer.

' This little human...he's not insane.., no!, he's completely evil, asking me?, does he want to drag me into his mess?!'

' No, that can't be it, could it be that I accidentally offended him earlier so he's now thinking of slandering me in public to instigate a rumor?!' Skeleton No 4's bones turned chilly at the thought, unconsciously shivering a little as his thoughts ran wild. Staring at Hitoshi, he felt as if this harmless little adorable munchkin beside him was more dangerous than he expected.

Realizing that he had wasted too much time in his thoughts which looked completely suspicious, he replied hurriedly.

"How could you think that the Young Miss has any problems?, She's the young miss?!." his voice even blunter and louder than ever as if trying to prove that he didn't dare to harbour such thoughts.

Hitoshi blinked, confused. "That's it?. You sure? Cause it looks like you think she is...."

' hahaha, you think I'll fall for your trap?!, DREAM ON!!!'

' if I explain I'm sure you'll look for a way to twist my words you little brat!.'

' damnit!, why did I even allow this human runt to accompany me in the first place!.' Skeleton No 4 couldn't help wondering whether his luck had finally run out.

" If you've got time to keep spouting nonsense then you definitely have time to keep looking for her so stop asking questions and help me find her." No 4's voice carried a rare irritated tone.

He didn't dare to offer any further elaborations, his bony steps clattering as he unconsciously picked up his pace.

Hitoshi frowned before hurrying to keep up, monologuing inwardly. ' Is he too scared to talk about her or something?' Hitoshi came to this conclusion when watching Skeleton No 4's reaction at his simple question. He obviously didn't know of the young miss's reputation within the estate so it was naturally he'd behave in such a way.

' Could this Aiko person really be that scary.' Hitoshi thought, his brows furrowed, his teeth bitting his lower lip.

Unknowingly, even he was beginning to feel traces of fear. He was so deep in thought that he didn't notice the large tree directly in his path.

Wham!

Hitoshi collided headfirst with the thick trunk, falling flat on his backside with a yelp. "Ow, ow, ow!" he winced, rubbing the sore spot on his forehead.

Grumbling, he glanced upward and froze.

High up on one of the branches stood a young girl with silky silver hair cascading down her back. Her milky pale skin glowed faintly in the dappled sunlight filtering through the leaves. She wore an elegant purple dress that contrasted sharply with the rugged tree bark beneath her feet. But what truly caught Hitoshi's breath was the glimpse of pink-striped cotton panties peeking out from beneath her dress.

His face turned bright red. "W-what the heck?!" he stammered, hurriedly scampering backwards on his but. When he had backed up a bit he quickly rubbed his eyes as if that would undo what he'd just seen.

Yet his gaze shamelessly drifted back up, this time taking in the full view of the girl's poised stance atop the branch.

' Huh?..' A soft sound of confusion escaped her lips, Her scarlet eyes gleamed coldly as she turned to glance downward as if detecting their presence.

" And who might you be?." The young heiress Aiko asked coldly, her frosty expression sending a shiver down Hitoshi's spine when her gaze fixed on him.

' hahahaha, serves you right you little brat!.' Skeleton No. 4, seemingly not bothered about Hitoshi's plight, instead satisfied, quickly bent a knee in greeting.

"Young Miss Aiko. " he said, relief evident even in his monotone voice, having, finally found her.

The girl, Aiko, regarded them both with a regal air, her expression unchanging yet her gaze still remained fixated on Hitoshi, inwardly wondering where this human boy had come from since as far as she could recall, the estate had no dealings with any humans nor human servants to begin with.

Hitoshi who felt the brunt of her icy gaze gulped, his mind racing.

' So this is the scary Young Miss?, So that's why no 4 was so scared....her eyes looks scary but..... definitely not scarier than Eri Onee-san's...' he thought to himself.

Despite his initial fear, a tiny spark of curiosity flickered within him. One thing seemed clear now, this search had just gotten a whole lot more interesting.

Meanwhile..... Somewhere else within the estate.

Eri Onee-san's sharp heels clicked against the polished marble floor of the manor's endless corridors. The cold air clung to the walls, carrying with it the faint scent of ancient wood and lavender polish.

Her expression, as always, was composed, though there was a slight crease between her brows, a rare sign of concern no one within the estate would've ever expected to see on her face before.

' Just where could that little rascal have gone?' she wondered, her thoughts flickering to the mischievous boy with messy hair and seemingly boundless energy.

Hitoshi had vanished without a word, leaving her to comb through the expansive estate like a mother hen searching for a stray chick.

As she turned a corner, voices echoed faintly from ahead.

" Hmm?." She raised a brow, instinctively slowing her pace, her ears sharpening to catch the conversation ahead.

The deep, guttural tone of a ghoul mingled with the raspy drawl of a zombie and the hollow clattering of a skeleton's speech.

"I'm telling you, that little human brat must've gotten into the estate by accident." the ghoul snickered, its gravelly voice scraping the air. " I mean, just think about it, What's a weak little flesh bag like that doing in the estate, I'm sure No. 4 must've caught him snooping around for scraps and was going to kick him out?"

"I betcha, you ain't too far from the truth, Maybe he's some kind of lost pet," the zombie croaked, wheezing between words as if breathing was a chore. "Looked pretty tasty, though. All soft and pink. Bet his meat would've fallen right off the bone kekekeke." He laughed sinisterly.

The skeleton cackled, its jaw rattling noisily. "Doesn't look like much muscle, but hey, a snack's a snack right?."

" Hahahaha, you said it!." The other undead cackled amongst themselves.

Eri Onee-san's lips thinned into a hard line after having gotten the gist of their conversation.

' These useless fools...instead of working their here talking about grabbing a bite?!." Moreover they were planning on harming the servant which she herself had gone out of her way to pick, though out of leisure, he was still her's non the less and hearing these useless piece's of shit joke about harming him so openly left a revolting taste in her mouth.

' Tsk....no, there's no point in getting angry. Fools will forever be fools, what's best is finding out where that little rascal ran off to' Her hand twitched at her side, but she forced herself to remain composed.

The trio rounded the corner, their laughter grating against her nerves. When they spotted her standing there, serene yet imposing in her crisp uniform, their merriment died instantly.

" E.e..eri San?!!!."

The ghoul's eyes widened, its dark sockets flickering with unease. The zombie's jaw slackened, and even the skeleton's rattling bones stilled. They stumbled over themselves, bowing awkwardly in deference.

"Please forgive us for not noticing you sooner Head Maid!!!." they chorused, voices trembling.

' Tch....at least they know when to act like the dogs they are...' a mocking glint flashed past her eyes momentarily.

Eri Onee-san feigned a delicate cough, her expression unchanging. " If i may be so frank as to ask, Who were you all talking about just now?"

The ghoul shifted uncomfortably. "Uh, just... uh, a kid. A Little human boy Head Maid. We saw him with Skeleton No. 4 earlier."

Eri's heart eased slightly. Finally, a clue. But her relief was short-lived.

"He sure was scrawny Eri-San" the ghoul sneered, emboldened by nervous energy. "The feeble brat looked like he couldn't even lift a broom properly, right fellas"

' couldn't lift a broom?, that little human could clean up more rooms in a single afternoon than you could in a whole year!.' she felt like cursing out loud at this ghouls ironic sentence yet before she could say anything.

The zombie beside the ghoul wheezed out a laugh. "Right, One good shove and I bet you the little meat bag would've gone flying!"

The skeleton clattered its jaw in agreement. " It's to be expected, those weak Humans are so fragile. Wouldn't mind seeing what his soul taste like though hehehe." The skeleton chuckled yet unbeknowst to him, his simple words was all it took for Eri's composure to finally crack.

A chilling air suddenly blew against their bodies, all the way to their bones as the temperature within the room began dropping at a rapid rate.

"..!!!!" They all became alarmed raising their heads to then see Eri's frosty expression which sent their minds into panic.

Sadly before they could react, A frigid wave of rage rolled through her chest, threatening to spill over. She clenched her fists, her nails biting into her palms.

But then the ghoul made its fatal mistake, thinking that Eri Onee-san was mad about them talking about their next meal Infront of her, he said.

"Please forgive us head maid, but we're sure if you took a bite of him you'd surely be satisfied!" He said earnestly. " The boy's flesh was the softest I'd ever seen, I'm sure someone as magnificent as yourself would've been stunned by it, not to mention what sort of wondrous blood lies beneath—"

Before the ghoul could finish his sentence, The air around Eri thickened, turning suffocatingly heavy. A low, almost imperceptible hum vibrated through the corridor as her aura flared to life instantaneously.

The feeling similar to a cold, menacing, and overwhelming blizzard!.

The ghoul, zombie, and skeleton had no time to react. They were all simultaneously slammed to the ground with brutal force, their bodies pressed flat against the marble floor as if crushed by an invisible weight.

The ghoul wheezed, its voice strangled. "C-can't... Move..."

Spiderweb like cracks spread across the floor beneath them, a testament to the sheer intensity of Eri's fury. The polished surface groaned under the pressure, each fracture spreading like a warning to their impending doom.

Eri's voice was icy, each word laced with lethal intent. "That 'little human boy' happens to be my hand picked servant. Hired personally by me. To think that repulsive maggots such as yourselves would dare to have thoughts on what is rightfully mine?!!"

"N-no, Head Maid!" the ghoul gasped, its face pressed painfully against the ground. "W-we were just joking!, Please!"

"Jokes," Eri echoed flatly. "Interesting sense of humor." She sneered wickedly, her sinister expression almost causing the undead creatures themselves to die of fright!.

The zombie's voice was high-pitched with panic. "We didn't mean it!, Honest!, Please, forgive us Headmaid!!!"

The skeleton, unable to move, simply rattled its bones in what might have been a desperate plea.

Noticing their cowardly and terror stricken figures, Eri's lips eventually curled into a disdainful sneer. "Pathetic."

Seemingly unable to stay within their presence a moment longer, She lifted her aura slightly, just enough for them to avoid being squished to meat paste but not rise. "Clean this mess up," she ordered coldly, gesturing to the cracked floor. "And remember, next time you think about touching one of my possessions, you'll wish for a punishment as mild as this."

The trio didn't hesitate to sputter hurried apologies, groveling like cowards who'd been given a new lease at life.

" Hmph!, a bunch of maggots indeed.."

Without another glance, Eri Onee-san turned on her heel, her heels clicking sharply against the fractured marble as she strode away. Her figure vanished into the shadows of the corridor, leaving behind only the trembling forms of the ghoul, zombie, and skeleton.

They lay there for a moment longer, gasping for breath, before dragging themselves up when her aura eventually dispersed, to begin the arduous task of repairing the damage.

As they prepared to get to work, one thought echoed in their minds.

NEVER MESS WITH THE HEAD MAID...
