Chapter 28: IS AK A DOG

The car ride had only just begun, but the silence lasted barely a minute before Hazzy leaned forward, resting his chin on the back of AK’s seat.

"So," Hazzy drawled with a grin, "how does it feel, Romeo, having Maya send her personal guild car to pick you up?"

AK kept his eyes fixed on the passing streets outside, his expression calm, but the faint blush on his ears betrayed him. "It’s not like that," he muttered.

"Not like that, huh?" Phaphy smirked from the other side. "The way you sprayed half a bottle of perfume before stepping out... yeah, totally not like that."

Ash, seated beside Aisha, laughed so hard he nearly choked. "Hazzy, Phaphy, stop. Poor guy’s already rehearsing love letters in his head."

AK snapped his head around, glaring. "Shut up, Ash! You’re single too, don’t act like you’re some romance guru."

Ash raised a hand in surrender. "True, true. But at least I’m not drooling over my guild leader."

Aisha, the quiet one, finally let out a small laugh, covering her mouth with her hand. Her shoulders shook as she looked at AK with amusement. "They’re not wrong, though..." she whispered softly.

Hazzy clapped Ash’s shoulder. "Exactly. Look at him—trying to act serious but secretly waiting for Maya to pat his head after training."

Phaphy joined in. "Or maybe he wants a reward every time he lands a hit. ’Good job, AK, here’s a smile just for you.’"

Everyone burst out laughing.

AK groaned and sank deeper into his seat, muttering under his breath. Why did I even agree to come with these idiots...

From the driver’s seat, Ajay cleared his throat sharply. "Enough chatter. This isn’t a comedy club. You’ll need your energy for training. Save the jokes for after you survive today."

The laughter died instantly, replaced with awkward silence.

But a moment later, Hazzy whispered just loud enough for Ash and Phaphy to hear, "Ajay must be single too. Look at that grumpy tone."

Ash covered his mouth to stifle another laugh, while Aisha shook her head, chuckling softly.

Arrival at Hunter Guild Headquarters

The guild headquarters loomed into view, towering like a fortress of steel and glass. Its presence dominated the street, its emblem of a roaring beast gleaming proudly on the front gates.

As the car pulled up, AK felt a familiar heaviness in his chest. He had walked through these halls in another timeline, when he was RED—the strongest hunter. Now, he was here again, but this time weaker, having to claw his way back up.

The car stopped, and Ajay’s voice cut through his thoughts. "We’re here. Out."

Everyone climbed out, stretching their legs. Together, they followed Ajay through the massive front doors into the heart of the guild. The marble floor gleamed under their feet, and guild members bustled around, carrying weapons, scrolls, and crates of supplies.

As they walked, the teasing started again.

Hazzy leaned closer to Phaphy. "Bet you ten gold coins, the first thing AK does is look for Maya."

Ash grinned. "No bet. We already know that’s gonna happen."

True to their prediction, as they passed a corridor, AK’s eyes flicked toward Maya’s office. The door was slightly open, but the room was empty. Disappointment tugged at his chest.

Ajay caught him red-handed. "Don’t worry, lover boy," Ajay said dryly. "The guild leader is already waiting in the training room. For all of you."

AK’s heart skipped a beat. Waiting... for us. No—waiting for me? His mind spiraled instantly, painting scenarios that had nothing to do with reality.

Hazzy caught his expression and whispered to Ash, "Look at him. He’s daydreaming again. I swear, if he trips on the stairs, I’m blaming Maya."

Aisha laughed quietly, shaking her head.

Training Room Confrontation

They finally reached the vast training room, its floor covered in reinforced stone tiles, weapons racks lining the walls.

In the center, Maya stood tall, her long hair tied neatly behind her, her aura calm but commanding.

Before anyone else could move, AK stepped forward quickly. "Guild Master Maya," he greeted with a slight bow, his voice steady but warmer than usual.

Maya raised an eyebrow. "You’re punctual this time. Good."

Hazzy elbowed Ash. "Look at him—greeting her like a loyal dog."

Phaphy snickered. "If he wags his tail, I’m leaving."

Aisha, trying to keep her composure, covered her mouth again, though her eyes sparkled with amusement.

Maya glanced briefly at the others. "What are you three laughing at? Did I miss a joke?"

All three stiffened. "N-no, nothing!" Hazzy stammered.

"Good." Maya clapped her hands. "Positions. Training begins now."

The Training

Ajay moved to the side, arms crossed, watching like a hawk. Maya picked up a practice sword and demonstrated the stance.

"Feet shoulder-width apart. Grip firm, not stiff. Control the blade, don’t let it control you." She slashed gracefully, her movements smooth and precise.

"Hazzy, you first."

Hazzy stepped forward, gripping the sword like it was a bat. Maya frowned immediately. "Wrong. If you swing like that, you’ll lose your arm before you land a hit. Loosen your wrist."

She corrected his posture, then moved on to Ash. "Too stiff. Relax your shoulders. The blade is an extension of you."

Phaphy was handed over to Ajay for magic practice. "Focus on your mana core. Don’t just dump power into the spell. Channel it evenly. Imagine pouring water through a funnel—controlled, steady."

Sparks of energy flickered at Phaphy’s fingertips, exploding too early. He yelped, shaking his hand.

Ajay smirked. "Too much. Again."

Meanwhile, Aisha practiced her stance silently, precise and calm. Maya nodded approvingly. "Good form. Keep at it."

Finally, AK stepped forward. He gripped the sword naturally, his past life as RED guiding his hands. He swung once, cleanly, earning a brief pause from Maya.

"...Not bad," she admitted.

Behind him, Hazzy groaned. "Of course he gets praised first try."

Ash leaned to Phaphy. "It’s the perfume. She’s being nice to him."

Phaphy snorted. "Next time I’m wearing perfume too."

Aisha laughed softly, shaking her head.

Training Intensifies

An hour passed. Sweat poured down their faces, muscles burning. Maya pushed them through sword drills, sparring matches, and reaction exercises.

"Hazzy! Faster footwork, or you’ll get cut down!"

"Ash, stop swinging like you’re chopping wood!"

"Phaphy, breathe! Magic isn’t brute force, it’s precision!"

By the time Maya finally called for a break, everyone collapsed onto the floor, panting.

Ajay’s phone buzzed, and he stepped outside. "Don’t move. Rest, but don’t slack off," he ordered before leaving.

Hazzy flopped on his back. "I’m dying."

Ash wiped sweat off his face. "This is worse than military school."

Phaphy groaned. "Why does my body feel like it’s been run over by a truck?"

Aisha, though exhausted, only smiled faintly. "Because you’re weak."

That earned her a half-hearted pillow throw from Hazzy.

---

Lunch Time

After another brutal round of training, Maya finally declared, "Enough. Lunch break. Ajay will show you to the cafeteria."

Relief washed over everyone as they followed Ajay down the hall.

The cafeteria was massive, filled with hunters chatting, laughing, and eating. The aroma of roasted meat and fresh bread made their mouths water instantly.

Hazzy grabbed a plate piled high with food. "I didn’t know the guild cafeteria was this good!"

Phaphy stuffed his mouth. "Mmm—better than restaurants outside."

Ash nodded. "If this is training food, I don’t mind suffering every day."

Aisha, delicate as always, ate quietly but smiled at their antics.

AK, meanwhile, couldn’t help but glance around, searching for Maya—even though she had said she’d eat later. She’s probably still in the training room... or maybe in her office. Who was she talking to yesterday?

Hazzy caught him staring off and grinned. "Thinking about Maya again?"

Ash and Phaphy snickered. "Of course he is."

Aisha laughed softly. "You’re hopeless, AK."

---

And this was only half the day. The training had just begun, but already, bonds were forming, rivalries sharpening, and AK’s obsession with Maya growing stronger.

Return to the Training Room

After lunch, the group strolled back toward the training hall, their stomachs full but their bodies already dreading what awaited them. Ajay walked ahead with his usual stiff posture, while AK, Hazzy, Ash, Phaphy, and Aisha followed close behind.

Halfway down the hall, AK suddenly froze mid-step, his eyes widening as a realization struck him. He turned sharply toward his guildmates, lowering his voice to a harsh whisper.

"You idiots!" he hissed.

The others blinked at him in confusion. "What now?" Hazzy asked, raising an eyebrow. 𝘧𝘳𝘦ℯ𝓌𝘦𝒷𝘯𝑜𝑣𝘦𝓁.𝒸𝘰𝓂

AK rubbed his forehead, groaning. "Back in the car this morning... why the hell did you all keep saying Maya’s name out loud?!"

Phaphy tilted his head. "So?"

"So?!" AK snapped, trying to keep his voice down. He pointed toward Ajay’s broad back. "Ajay was the one driving the car! He heard everything! I forgot in the moment, but I just realized it now—I’m doomed!"

Hazzy smirked, waving a hand dismissively. "Calm down, AK. Don’t panic. Ajay was actually the one who said it first, remember? He was the one who joked you’d blush whenever someone mentioned Maya’s name. We only... expanded on it."

AK’s face paled. "Wait—you’re telling me Ajay started it?!"

Ash leaned in with a mischievous grin. "Yup. And not just that... Ajay also told us something else."

AK’s stomach sank. "...What did he tell you?"

Ash’s grin widened. "He said Maya herself told him that you’re in love with her."

The words hit AK like a thunderbolt. He stumbled on his feet, nearly tripping over the polished floor tiles. His face burned crimson as his voice cracked. "M-Maya told him WHAT?!"

Hazzy and Phaphy snorted with laughter, while Aisha covered her mouth, her eyes sparkling with quiet amusement.

"Y-you’re lying," AK stammered, shaking his head furiously. "There’s no way Maya would say something like that!"

"Believe what you want," Ash teased, shrugging. "But that blush on your face says it all."

AK groaned, covering his face with both hands. "This is not the issue! Forget it! Let’s just focus on training before I die of embarrassment."

Hazzy, Ash, Phaphy, and Aisha exchanged sly glances, their eyes sparkling with unspoken laughter as they silently communicated with one another. Their expressions said it all: Our leader is totally hopeless when it comes to Maya.

---

By the time they reached the training hall again, AK’s heart was still pounding from embarrassment. The heavy wooden doors creaked open, and the group stepped inside. Maya stood at the center of the room, her arms folded, waiting like a general about to drill her soldiers.

Without wasting a moment, she barked, "Positions!"

The group scrambled into their stances, and the second round of training began—more intense, more brutal, and with Maya’s piercing gaze watching their every move.
