Chapter 60: We Need to Exterminate the Monsters

The forest was to the south of the capital, in the east and west there was a plain and it was divided according to the villages, some were larger and others smaller, and the development of each was variable, depending on the management it was a great place to live and work.

In the north, there was another forest, but it was avoided because of the growth of the trees, it was difficult to move around in, and it was too dense. And so far, no one has set out to clear it or create paths for trade, which would make it easier to get to the northern cities because it takes longer to go east or west.

The southern forest was easier to move around in, as it had always been used for roads, so at times some adventurers went in to collect wood and prevent too many trees from growing and damaging the path, and other workers were also called in to take care of the roads that existed within it.

In other words, the forest was what kept many families afloat, because there was always work to be done. Not just for the adventurers, but for all the other workers, who might no longer be in demand.

That’s why the raid mission was so important, and that’s why people were distressed when they saw the adventurers bloodied and with parts of their bodies amputated.

When they arrived, people were very frightened; no one would be reassured to see an S-rank adventurer in that state, nor to see a group of strong people return to that state.

This situation of injured adventurers was relatively common, often novices got involved in missions they couldn’t handle and ended up getting hurt. The situation eased when Darius started producing potions. On the one hand, this was good because it reduced the number of adventurers in serious condition, but on the other hand, it was bad because the adventurers began to challenge themselves more and more, taking on more difficult quests - after all, it’s easy to take more risks when you have a chance of reducing the damage.

The adventurers went to the Guild and the treatment began, those who were awake took healing potions, and those who were passed out received help from mages who used healing magic.

The mission had no contractor, it was created by the Guild to solve its problems, so the responsibility of each person was the sole responsibility of the Adventurers’ Guild and the death of any adventurer would result in fees for the families.

But the amount would be paid by the Kingdom, since the matter involved issues that could harm the entire Capital.

While Elara was bathing with the adventurers, Clara came in and said: "Several Guilds have reported monsters missing."

Elara sighed, she was tired, but she would have to report what she had seen to the King. As his daughter, she could simply go into the castle and speak to him in person, but she hated that.

At the Castle she asked to speak to the King, he was having lunch and she disturbed his lunch and began to tell him what she had seen.

A giant structure appeared in the forest, it was at least 300 feet long and almost 500 feet high, which was strange, as you could see it from afar, but looking out of the forest the structure was invisible and could only be seen when approaching.

It was like a tower, the monsters were all around it, some entered and it seemed that it was bigger on the inside, since several monsters entered without another leaving. When the adventurers got closer, the monsters started attacking, but when they moved away they simply ignored it, there was something there that was somehow controlling all the monsters and animals in the forest.

Even the slimes, which were considered harmless monsters to humans, were attacking.

They attack crops and animals and dead monsters, they avoid people and beings they can hurt, and they rarely approach living beings of other species, so to see slimes carrying out attacks was somewhat surprising.

Kael let her finish the report. He knew how to deal with monsters, in his youth, he had been an adventurer, but when he became Duke, he put that aside and focused on managing his land and looking after the family army. His daughter liked the stories and wanted to be an adventurer, in just over a year she became Guildmaster and then achieved the S-rank, Kael reached most of the A-rank, he saw talent in his daughter, so he didn’t force Ella to be a princess.

"What do you suggest we do?"

"I suggest a mission to exterminate the monsters and destroy the structure."

"Do you know what will happen tomorrow?"

She nodded.

"Tomorrow is the tournament that Darius organized, do you think any adventurers would accept the mission?"

"Possibly yes."

"Whoever wins will receive 3,000 gold coins, we can’t hire those who are competing, maybe not even those who will attend, because it’s a chance to see the best warriors on the continent, not even the tournament we held has people as strong as the ones he got."

"What do you suggest?"

"We’ll pay for mercenaries or wait three days to start our attack, until then we have to release subsidies to the adventurers who have been harmed."

"Don’t you think you’re giving him too much credit?" 𝙛𝓻𝒆𝓮𝒘𝙚𝙗𝒏𝙤𝙫𝓮𝒍.𝓬𝒐𝙢

"How many S-rank adventurers do you have in the Guild?"

"At least seven."

"Five of whom work for him. In other words, he has more S-rank adventurers working in a factory than you do. He knows what people want and that’s why he manages to have strong people working for him. If I call the adventurers, I know that the high-ranking ones won’t go, because they’re either in the tournament or working with Darius. That leaves those from other cities and countries, but they’ll want to watch the tournament, or they wouldn’t be here waiting."

Kael paused as he sipped his wine, staring into the crystal goblet.

"If I were to issue a decree that the tournament wouldn’t take place now, only after I’ve defeated the monsters, we’d certainly have a lot of people complaining, especially those who don’t live here. Even though I’m the King, having a lot of people against your decision is bad, it would only indicate that the King is getting weaker and when we could go to war with other countries, we would certainly be considered easy targets due to dissatisfaction."

Elara knew this was true, but she didn’t want it to be.

"All right, I’ll send some soldiers and you recruit some adventurers. Tomorrow we’ll start the mission, but we won’t get our strength until after the tournament."

He continued eating, and when he had finished he went into a room and signed some decrees, the first of which gave money to the adventurers who had been harmed, the amount was the same as the mission. The amount the Guild received was returned to the contractors and the adventurers were paid.

The second decree summoned all adventurers to the extermination mission, but it would only be valid one day after the tournament. That way, he avoided angry people, especially with an event that, in a way, helped the public coffers due to the movement of coins. As well as more tax being collected, such as entry fees.

Kael was afraid that the mission would end in a massacre and that the adventurers and soldiers would die, which would be a great loss of strength, as well as having to explain to the other countries that they had lost important adventurers.

"This is happening in every city in the Kingdom and I’ve received information that other countries are reporting the same thing."

Kael was getting up when he heard Elara speak. Then he sat down and thought.

"We can’t take care of everyone’s safety, an extermination mission is difficult enough, now carrying one out in every city is impossible. The strength and money to do it is absurd."

"We’re not sure about the structures, we only have information that the monsters have suddenly disappeared."

"But it would be safe to say that the same thing may have happened in all these places, at least it’s more likely than not, the problem would be if the reason is different and it’s worse than having these structures being formed."

Kael was even more afraid, but he issued the decree and a minister read it out and the voice was broadcast throughout the Capital.

The information about the mysterious structure was hidden, it was only reported that the monsters were more violent and they were in a deeper part of the forest.

Elara was asked to inform the other Guilds of what she had discovered and forbade the Kingdom’s Guilds from releasing this information. They could only create missions to check it out and had to stay away from the monsters for their own safety.

Kael was gathering the soldiers and Elara did as she was told. She got a few adventurers who were indifferent to the tournament, the others were either weak or didn’t accept the mission because they wanted to watch the tournament. Kael was right about that.
