Reincarnated as the Baron's son: My Infinite Card Upgrade System-Chapter 113: The purge
Bash!
Ava slammed the door open and ran into the room, immediately desperately trying to find where she kept the box Alaric had given her.
She flipped the bed over, almost sending it crashing into the wall.
Not even a second wasted, and she picked up the wooden plate, revealing the magic box that she had hidden under it.
A smile formed on her face, but it didn’t last long as she soon heard a voice behind her.
"So you finally returned, and here I thought you had died in the war or something."
Turning around, Ava realized it was Velmo who had walked into the room.
He didn’t look in good form, as his entire body seemed to be covered in bandages.
"Velmo..." Ava blurted out.
"That would be me..." He walked into the room and calmly sat down on the single lone chair he could find, "You look shocked to see me... were you also expecting me dead?"
Ava looked to the side; for one, she didn’t have time to meddle with Velmo’s mind games.
Getting ready to stand to her feet—
"You know, I tried to kill Alaric twice. And both times, I failed. Badly. One of my strongest assassins went poof! Nowhere to be found."
Ava paused, giving him the side eye.
"He warned me; his words were quite simple at the time, but now I understand it all too well. Alaric is going to be a problem in the future. I knew it too; that man simply knew how to manipulate his chances. While I didn’t think he was pure evil, I knew no one in the kingdom would stand a chance against him if he chose to be one."
He continued,
"And now that your boyfriend is out there blowing things up, even going as far as helping the duke from another region, I must say, my fear was pretty valid, don’t you think?"
"Why are you here?" Ava asked, clearly not trying to entertain the discussion.
"Quite the bold girl." Velmo smiled, "My county is under attack, so it’s not like I can go home. So I guess, just like you, I am trying to understand why that little rascal is trying to commit mass genocide."
Ava didn’t trust his words, but at the same time, it didn’t seem like he was lying either.
Taking a deep breath, she stood up.
It was then Hina and Erica walked in.
Hina looked a tad bit sad, which could only mean she had received some questioning on her way here; Erica, on the other hand, seemed to have a bit of hope now that Ava was back.
Without saying a word, Ava held the box outward, while also doing the same with the paper with her other hand.
Velmo recognized the box, being the one who gave it to Alaric and all.
When he discovered the box in the ancient ruin, he didn’t expect anything from it since it didn’t give out any type of threat whatsoever.
Still, he wanted his curiosity satisfied; as such, he wanted to know what was inside said box.
Not like he did a good job hiding it; his devious smile already gave that fact away.
Focusing deeply on the writing, Ava could understand it was a single character, probably another language from another world, or maybe it was just Alaric playing with lines.
Either way, it was a bit complicated to rewrite.
’Where is it?’ she was desperate.
She continually turned the box, trying to find anywhere said writing could fall under.
And then she found it, a small green flat space at the lower part of the box. 𝚏𝕣𝐞𝗲𝐰𝕖𝐛𝐧𝕠𝕧𝚎𝚕.𝐜𝚘𝗺
Pulling the box closer, she could tell the green spot had the same writing as the one on the paper.
"Uhh..."
At this point, she didn’t know what to do; even if the box had the same writing, how would that help her unlock the box to begin with?
A small sad frown played on her face for a while, before she then looked at Hina, slightly asking for an idea that would work.
"Let’s see here, you clearly have the same writing on the box and paper. And there doesn’t seem to be a spot where you can write what was written on the paper on the box as you were expecting..."
All eyes immediately fell on Velmo.
"Which means, it could be one of two things, or at least I think it is... One, probably the box might scan the writing when you either put the paper close or you push the green space, and secondly, voice activation; you need to pronounce what is written on the paper."
Hina looked at Ava, "Try it; it’s not like we have any choice here."
Nodding her head, Ava did as she was told.
She first pushed the green space on the box with her finger and then placed the paper above the box.
Still, nothing happened.
"Oh? Then it should be voice activation then," Velmo hinted.
While it sounded like a good idea at the time, there was simply one issue.
No one knew what the character was to begin with.
For a brief moment, Ava had hope; while it wasn’t certain, it was still enough to keep her going.
Once again, she looked to Hina, hungry to know what their next move would be.
At this point, Hina was already in deep thought, trying to remember if there was anything Alaric had told her that could help them in their current situation.
Alaric wasn’t the type to hand out a half-assed clue. He probably didn’t want just anyone to have access to the box.
After a while of hard thinking, a thought finally occurred to her.
"Yeolda," Hina blurted out.
Before anyone could understand, the box gave out a weird glow, almost like it was loading from the bottom up.
"Ohhh?~"
Velmo turned his attention to Hina after the box suddenly started giving out light.
"Lord Alaric once said a strange language to me; I didn’t think it would work. You can wipe that smirk off your face," Hina immediately retorted at him.
Blip!
There was a huge hologram playing in front of them, one that showed Alaric sitting inside an empty room filled with nothing but a white abyss.
*Clears throat*
{I assume you have opened the box, Hina? Good, took you long enough to do that. If you have already done this, that means I must have completed my task.}
All eyes were fixed on the screen, all with different emotions, from entertained curiosity to a saddened gaze.
[Now then, I shall explain the situation in a way you can understand; not that I have too long anyway, this damn goddess isn’t one to joke around.
Okay, I’ll keep it simple: our world is at risk of getting destroyed, or should I say eaten? Either way works. Apparently, there is energy, Yin and Yang, one of happiness and the other sorrow, something like that. This said monster feeds off happiness, and I mean that literally; it eats whoever has this Yang energy, and then the world will follow. As long as Yang energy suppresses the Yin, this world is gone, and there’s not a thing any of us can do against a god. Trust me, I have thought this through.]
Ava remained calm; she already knew the better part of this story, so she wasn’t too shocked to hear it.
Velmo, on the other hand, was already losing his mind at the concept.
Not only was the box a way for Alaric to communicate in a weird way he hadn’t seen before, he was now hearing there was a god that wanted to devour the whole world.
[There is only one way to defeat this god: that is to starve it. So, I chose to carry that burden myself. Not because I am a hero or anything, but I never belonged to this world to begin with. Not in the way you think of, at least. When push comes to shove, any of you would have collapsed from the thought. And I don’t blame you. The only reason I allowed Hina to come with me was because, for my plan to come true, I needed to continuously heal myself. But now that I have gained the ability, she is free to join you guys; she is not a bad person, neither are the demons under me. Once all this is done, I want you, Ava, to reunite the world to what it once was.]
He continued,
[Once I have wiped out 90% of the world, or more, people would most likely see me as the villain here, since before they die, I will be the last thing they see. But it doesn’t matter, because I’ll be dead by then.]
Ava and Hina were terrified; that was not something they could dream of. Alaric dying was not something anyone close to him could dream of.
[Oh, and also, once I’m dead, you should see a weird-looking material on my corpse. It’s a way to revive everyone who died from the chaos I caused. Having to keep so many souls from dying isn’t an easy task; as such, my soul will get damaged in the process. A small price to pay, I guess. But one I’m willing to pay if it means you guys get to live free from death.]
