Reincarnated as the Baron's son: My Infinite Card Upgrade System-Chapter 101: The god devourer
He saw a future.
A future that should never exist.
A future that seemed to be closing in on him, a powerless future.
"They are all dead."
Even confused, Alaric could not help but utter those words.
Not once did he ever imagine something like that could happen.
It was the only reason he was never worried about the war brewing between the two nobles. Simply because he knew at the end, everything would work in his favor.
An ego he should have never had to begin with.
Kneeling before the creator, he asked, his words laced with submission.
"How do I stop this?"
To which the goddess replied,
"It’s not something you have power over. I myself am powerless against it. Both I and the Devourer are of the same beginning."
She moved closer to Alaric.
"And while I cannot tell you why the Devourer god despises you, I can tell you this much. Every bad thing that has ever happened to you in your former world was due to his influence, and every good you have done was of his wish."
Alaric listened, pushing away any thoughts he could possibly have.
"Yin and Yang. A force that had existed before time itself. Yin, said to harbor suffering and futility, and Yang, said to harbor happiness and fruitfulness. You, my dear Alaric, have the Yin energy within you. You were always meant to suffer and have those around you attract the Yang energy." She continued, "Once the world has gathered enough Yang energy, and you have been completely shrouded with Yin, he will awaken to devour all. For he can only survive with Yang energy. In as much as he despises you, he needs you to survive."
Alaric looked to the ground, even more confused than ever.
"The only reason you are in this world is because he awakened and devoured everything in your former world. I was the one who saved you from him; I was the one who wanted to see you safe. I didn’t imagine the hatred of the Devourer god ran so far he would follow you to another world. But it doesn’t matter; as long as you are here, whatever goes on in the outside world is not of your concern. I shall send you to another world, where you can survive once again." 𝗳𝗿𝐞𝕖𝘄𝗲𝕓𝗻𝚘𝚟𝕖𝐥.𝚌𝕠𝕞
He began to connect the dots; the reason he got reincarnated in the first place was due to the influence of this woman, the creator.
If what she said was true, and indeed his former world had been devoured by the god...
"Does that mean I have been here before?" Alaric asked out loud.
"You ask if you have been to my sanctuary before?" The creator smiled, "Of course you have, before your reincarnation. Although, the moment you set foot out of this domain and enter a new world, you lose your memories of this place."
"Is that so?"
Haha!
Alaric laughed, falling to the ground, his back laid flat as he looked to the never-ending darkness before him.
Ahhhhhhhhhrggggggh!!!
Soon, his laugh turned into an antagonizing scream, slamming his fist multiple times on the ground.
The creator wasn’t bothered; she understood why Alaric was reacting the way he was.
After everything she had told him, and everything that had happened in such a short amount of time, it was only natural anyone would break down.
Except in Alaric’s terms, he was simply trying to calm himself down, as new ideas were dancing in his head.
Once his screams stopped, he took a deep sigh and sat back up.
The goddess was still there, observing him.
"You don’t intend on letting me leave? Am I right?" Alaric asked.
"You ask such a strange question despite knowing the answer." She suddenly moved closer, "Would you let your lover go if you knew she was going to die?"
Alaric replied, "No, I wouldn’t. Not unless she has a way to get herself out of the mess."
The goddess gave an immediate sassy expression.
"If you think I would allow you to leave just because you came up with a scheme, then I assure you, you are only wasting your time."
"No, it’s not a scheme. It will work, I know it." Alaric uttered with determination, "You said the Devourer god needs Yang energy to survive; without it, he would be dead, right?"
"Beings like us don’t die; we stop existing, but yeah, it’s something like that."
"So, what if the world was filled with Yin energy instead? If the Devourer god was to wake up to only meet Yin energy for dinner, what then?" Alaric stared at her intensely.
The goddess was speechless for a while.
"That can work, if I was to be 100% honest with you. The Devourer god is nothing but a child without food. Still, how do you intend to spread Yin energy around the world?" the creator inquired.
Alaric wore a sad look on his face as he gave his response.
A response that left the goddess surprised.
"I’ll plunge the world into destruction with my own hands."
Initially, the creator did not take his word to heart; she knew Alaric cared very much for the people around him.
But as she looked into his eyes and realized those eyes no longer held any bit of humanity in them, she threw her doubt to the side and focused solely on him.
"You would kill everyone in the world if it came to it?"
"If it means finally killing the god, then yes, I will."
"Your parents?"
"I’ll kill them as well if they get in my way."
"Your precious knight Ava?"
"I don’t have the option to pick favorites. She will die as well."
The goddess blushed, now hugging Alaric from behind with a smile on her face.
Ahhh~
She moaned.
"This is the you I’ve been waiting for, ahhh~ you’re back to me. This was my goal from the start; it’s why I brought back a you from the past I missed so much. Please don’t go again; stay like this. I love you like this."
Alaric did not give any response; not a single word left his mouth.
Moving towards his front view, she cupped her hands on his cheeks, taking a closer look at him.
"I do not detect any lies from you. And your mind is free of thoughts. You really do mean this?"
"I am not the type to make an empty bluff. If the god devours Yang energy, he will kill me. I don’t want to die; as such, I have to kill him first."
Once again, the goddess smiled.
"Hmm~ that’s what I want to hear. Very well done. Very well done indeed." She stepped back a bit, "I will assist you on your journey. I would like to watch the love of my life battle his true war against the Devourer god."
"Get a front-row seat."
"By the way, the system you use and utilize is my power configured into a video game for you to understand and use gradually without damaging your body. I will give you a boost so you can use the system more freely."
Hearing what the goddess said, Alaric did a dramatic bow.
"I won’t disappoint you."
"I know. You may go now."
Snapping her finger, a blue portal showed up beside Alaric.
Once he had raised his head, Alaric wasted no time walking through the portal.
He fully knew what he went back to do, and with everything he had, he planned on never going back.
...
Back at the House of Lorik.
The Duchess had woken up from the slumber and had deployed soldiers to surround the entire region and search for the girl in black, identified to be Hina.
Meanwhile, Alaric’s unconscious body was laid on the ground, right behind Ava, who had just defeated Hina in a battle.
Or at least was defeating her.
The fact Hina could heal infinitely was a huge advantage for her and a nuisance to Ava.
Standing to her feet, her injuries healing up, Hina uttered, her voice barely audible.
"You can be such a pain in the ass. Stop being selfish and hand him over to me!"
Ava was calm and collected.
"Why are you resorting to this? Believe me, I don’t want to have to strike you down. Just surrender; I’m sure when Lord Alaric wakes up, he’ll find a way to fix all this."
Hina suddenly laughed.
"Lord Alaric isn’t waking up any time soon; you can count on that."
"Huh? What are you talking about?"
"He is in a safe place now, a place far greater than this shithole we call a world. Now that you know he’s not coming back, do you still intend to fight?"
Ava sighed.
"He still hasn’t made enough profit this month from the baron sales. Lord Alaric is most definitely coming back."
Hina frowned, "Listen here, I just told you what the damn goddess said, and you still—"
"Do you despise me that much that you would wish I did not return?"
A familiar voice spoke out from behind Ava.
