Chapter 52: Salvageable Weapons

Chapter 52

Of all the people he could have met in the... or rather, around the strange... whatever he could call the weird-looking place he was currently staring at, it had turned out to be the very last person he had expected to see. Their transportation was indeed random.

A smile calmly settled on his face, replacing the subtle frown he had earlier, as the earth his feet were trapped in slowly began to loosen and the chains unwrapped around his body.

It only took a few seconds for his body to come completely free, and thereafter, Kuran slowly walked to him, offering him a hand, the gleaming smile still on his face.

"We should head inside; there are two others here with me."

Nodding his head slightly, Megumi took the boy’s hand, and together they began to head toward the mud wall, which had caught his attention earlier. The boy let go of his hand along the way, and upon reaching the wall, he gently placed his hand on it.

Slowly, the wall began to move, the strange mud beginning to tear apart, and a hole appeared in the place where he had placed his hand. In the next few seconds, a hole big enough for both of them to pass through was made in the wall.

Megumi couldn’t help but think as he saw what was happening.

’So whoever possesses the earth ability is the second person he is referring to.’

As he was staring keenly at the mud wall, Kuran took a step forward and then gestured that they both head inside. The boy looked up at the sky—a clear blue hue—and then glanced around the area as he walked in.

Megumi followed behind him, stopping just past the path that had been opened up for both of them. The first thing that caught his attention was the two towers standing some meters apart from each other, their spires greatly reaching to the sky.

He was now able to see just how tall they actually were, reaching a height of about fifty meters. They were round towers built of weathered grey stone, with narrow slits at the sides for windows, and vines were creeping around the weathered walls of the towers.

All around them lay a desolate ruin, the few buildings in the area shattered with debris scattered all around the place. The buildings were all ashen and looked like they had collapsed from the outside.

And further to the sides stood weathered grey walls built around each other to form a fence, though they seemed like they could barely hold on any longer. It led him to guess that the mud wall was most likely due to the fact that the northern wall had already collapsed... or was destroyed, rather.

"Well, here we are."

Kuran said, gesturing to one of the towers—the one that stood to the east—and then he proceeded toward the entrance of the building. Megumi followed behind him.

He pushed open the heavy wooden door with a bit of strain and proceeded forward into the first floor of the tower.

Inside, the tower was dimly lit by the light allowed in through the narrow slits around the tower, and before them stood a staircase that spiraled upward, where Megumi could see nothing else but darkness.

Megumi eyed the boy standing in front of him for a moment and then cautiously asked,

"I guess... the two others are up there?"

Kuran nodded his head.

"Yes, the others, Lady Ryu, and there’s also a good friend of mine—Xi Silver, from House Xi of Kitsuboma, though I’m certain you haven’t heard of them. They’re both on the top floor and are waiting for us as I speak."

Megumi furrowed his brow at the boy’s last words, to which he simply smiled.

"Well, you have my shadows to thank for being quite the swift messengers. Though, they only know you as something... or someone who doesn’t pose a threat, so you should expect a bit of shock from both of them when they see you."

Megumi inclined his head, his gaze shifting to the spiraling stairs.

"Thank you."

Kuran simply waved a hand gently before taking a step up the first stair.

"It’s my pleasure."

Megumi followed behind as they ascended the spiraling stairs. He caught sight of old tapestries hung on the walls, depicting scenes of battles with sticky webs clinging to them.

At least looking at them—even for a brief moment—had kept his mind preoccupied as they passed the dark parts of the stairs until they finally arrived at the top floor of the tower.

It was a small chamber with a pointed ceiling and a single tall window to the side, and in the middle of the chamber, seated on the dusty wooden floor, was a girl with clear blue eyes and golden-brown hair, her knees kept together and her hands tightly hugging them.

By her side was a boy with ruffled black hair; he was staring at the floor... or at his shadow, rather, with eyeglasses perched on his face. He looked up at them as soon as they entered the chamber.

Megumi locked eyes with the boy and watched as his eyes slightly widened, and then he straightened himself, proceeding to lower himself in a simple bow while kneeling.

Megumi promptly waved a hand at him and nodded.

"Please don’t... While we’re here, I would prefer that you remain less formal with me, at least until the test is over."

Kuran suddenly glanced at him, causing him to furrow his brow, but it seemed he wasn’t the only one who had a reaction. The boy and Hime both had strange looks on their faces as soon as they heard what he said.

He quickly tried to calm the situation.

"Did I say anything wrong?"

The other two looked away while Kuran nodded his head.

"No, Megumi... It’s not that you said anything wrong; it’s just that none of us here know how to not be formal... or even a little less formal, based on how you put it."

Megumi’s face turned solemn as he glanced at the two children sitting on the floor, and with a smile, he shrugged his shoulders.

"Well, how about we simply remain comrades from this point forward, fellow aspiring exorcists, am I right?"

There was a brief silence between the four of them, and then the two sitting on the floor nodded their heads while Kuran simply smiled at him.

Then he turned around and walked toward the edge of the room where an old, large wooden box lay. It was the only thing inside the chamber, and slowly he opened it, creaking noises echoing throughout the chamber.

A cloud of dust erupted from inside the box, stirring up in the air and causing them a little difficulty in breathing. And after the dust settled, he calmly pulled the box over and allowed its contents to fall onto the wooden floor.

Subsequently, the heir of Kitsuboma bent down and began to pick up some of the things that were on the floor: swords, polearms, stilettos, and some scraps of broken shields.

Hime’s eyes widened while Silver simply tilted his head as he gazed at the box. He was clearly surprised, but not as surprised as Hime was.

And as for Megumi, he stood completely still without a particular thought on his face, and after a while, glanced at the sky through the single window that was in the room, a single thought in his mind.

’Just how long have they been here?’

Meanwhile, Kuran looked up and shrugged his shoulders at the looks of surprise on the faces of the other two.

"Well, I didn’t quite sit idly by when I first arrived here..."

Then he picked up the weapons and began to walk back to the three of them.

"... And Adept Hakuro never said we couldn’t use weapons... well, compared to our soul relics, these things are pretty useless."

And upon reaching them, he dropped the items on the floor.

"... But we still have salvageable weapons... at least. Now all we need is a plan for how to find the rest of our comrades."
