Chapter 47: Not A Human?

Chapter 47

There was a clear expression of shock on Megumi’s face as he stared at the runes.

Name: Megumi Akira Fujiboma]

Race: Unknown]

Class: Sorcerer]

Rank: Awakened]

Abilities...]

He stopped at the runes describing his abilities as they went over every ability he had awakened since becoming an awakened sorcerer. He wanted to take some time to think about the runes he had seen earlier.

Not only had the system used his middle name, which wasn’t too strange, it failed to identify his race as a human being and saw his identity as a sorcerer as some sort of class. What was a class even supposed to be? Why was his race unknown?

’Could it be possible that I’m not a normal human being?’

He stroked his chin, his eyes staring emptily at the ivory floor of his room and his mind intently fixed on the set of runes that lay before him. He tried to make sense of it, minutes quickly flying by, and in the end, it all turned out to be futile.

He looked past the runes describing his abilities and read his system’s interpretation of the runes that came after them. They were just as much of a shock as everything about his system had been.

System: lvl 2]

Subsequently came perhaps the most pleasant news he had ever gotten since deciding to summon his system. His eyes gleamed.

Bound links: 1/2]

Targets: Yukine Fujiboma]

A pleasant smile curled up his lips, and with a gasp of relief, he dismissed the runes and lay down on the bed, his face facing the ceiling. Of course, he would normally be asking himself a lot more questions—at least in the past—but now, considering how hard he had worked himself, he simply decided not to burden himself with futile thoughts.

Little or not, after eleven whole years, he was finally able to summon the system at will, and not only that, he had also learned a slight pattern in how the system worked, and with it a clearer path to gaining power.

Just like him, the system was learning... or it was learning through him, rather. It had always been strange ever since the first day it appeared, nine years ago, back when he was still two years old. But the system did keep to its end of the deal, though, granting him tenfold increments of his target’s achievements.

And now, he could create links with one more person, gaining tenfold whatever abilities and powers they would gain in the future. He didn’t have a general grasp of what the system meant by worthwhile achievements, but through his journey with Yuki thus far, he at least had a basic knowledge of what it entailed.

A few minutes of silence later, the alarm on his communicator rang. He yawned and slowly raised his wrist, staring at the display of the device he was wearing with a glassy gaze.

’It’s dinner time already.’

With another yawn, he slowly slid down his fairly large, warm, and comfortable bed. Dressed in a simple red kimono with a black obi around his waist, he exited the confines of his room and entered the castle’s corridor.

He was able to catch glimpses of the chambers the other children had been assigned to, which were just as large as his. He admired the intricate engravings on the walls and ceilings. There were even some chandeliers hanging from the ceilings, shining dim golden lights upon the corridor, along with golden torches hung on the walls and grand sculptures of people—most likely fellow sorcerers standing next to them.

’How magnificent.’

He made a turn by the end of the corridor and was met by two large red wooden doors with two servants standing on either side of them. There were also intricate carvings on the face of the door, just as magnificent as every other piece of art he had seen so far.

The two servants bowed slightly and then proceeded to open the door for him. Slowly, the mental hinges of the door swung smoothly as it opened wide, revealing the marvelous grand hall of the spirit castle.

He walked in, his eyes gleaming at the breathtaking architecture of the castle’s grand hall. There were wooden beams etched with intricate carvings of dragons, along with red pillars polished to a warm sheen, holding up the sweeping curves of the roof. On the ceiling, two chandeliers hung, a cascade of crystal and jade, along with the hall’s lanterns, casting a warm light, illuminating the faces of the other aspiring sorcerers standing in the grand hall.

’Mmh, what is that smell?’

What caught his attention the most, though, was a long table standing in the middle of the grand hall, and on the wooden table, generously polished, lay a feast truly fit for a noble like himself: jade tea steaming in porcelain cups, plates of crispy Peking duck, platters of jade-green stir-fried vegetables, fragrant plates of rice, and many delicate pastries filled with delicious bean paste.

His gaze remained fixed on the tea for a while; his demeanor turned slightly sour.

’Why does there always have to be tea?’

With a sigh, he walked over and took a seat at the very end of the table with some of the children already seated. More of them were slowly coming in as well, and before long, the thirty or so remaining aspiring sorcerers were seated opposite each other across the large table, their mouths almost watering at the sight of the grand feast.

Under the supervision of one of the castle’s servants, a short prayer was said, and with little hesitation, every one of them quickly picked up their cutlery and dug into the exonerating meal, their taste buds igniting with joy at the touch of the flavorful feast.

The well-roasted bird meat and steak, the fragrant plates of rice, and the delicious pastries were all devoured in the next few minutes, with a few of the children filling their cups with tea and others taking small bites of the vegetables.

Megumi had his cup filled with fruit juice, savoring every sip of his drink as he glanced around at the table of aspiring sorcerers. All of them had pleasant looks on their faces... bright smiles and gleaming eyes.

And somewhere in the middle of the opposite side of the table, Yuki was seated, pouring herself some tea into a porcelain cup. Her gaze was distant, her eyes empty as she stared at the flowing jade-green liquid.

’This is the second time I’ve seen her with that look. What could be wrong with her, I wonder?’

He stared at her for a while and then slowly turned away, taking the last sip of his fruity drink and then dropping the cup on the table with a satisfied gasp. After a while, he stood up from his chair and glanced around the grand hall once again.

A quick system check, some good rest, and a nice meal... he had ticked almost everything in his box in wait for the next day, everything except for one.

His gaze trailed back to the children gathered around the table; his expression turned somber.

’I just have to make a few friends; what’s the worst that could happen?’

Still in thought, he heard the sound of one of the chairs move, and soon after, footsteps swiftly approached him. He snapped out of his daze and glanced to the side, a familiar boy with curly white hair now standing before him.

A smile appeared on the boy’s face as he waved a hand, looking at Megumi. He then cleared his throat and glanced around the grand hall, his gaze falling back on the other white-haired child before him.

"I guess this is our second meeting, Megumi... Uh, well, it was me who went out of my way to see you, but I hope I’m not being a bother."

Megumi smiled at him, waving his hand slightly. A perfectly forced smile, aimed at keeping his deep sense of dissatisfaction unknown to Kitsuboma’s heir.

’Just get on with what you want already.’

Seeing his gesture, the boy hesitated for a moment and then continued.

"In that case... If you don’t mind, could we perhaps have a walk by the garden? There’s something I want to talk to you about."
