Chapter 11: An Abrupt End

Chapter 11

The woman lying right next to him... The mere sight of her brought back a great surge of emotions for him like she was someone he had known at some point, but he was also confused at the same time. It seemed that a huge storm was waiting to break from what he had come to learn at the soldier camp, but he was suddenly here a second later.

Whatever fate had in store for him, he was sure had been paved on a rocky path that he would forever have to walk on. But whatever the case, this was only another test, and everything happening just now, he was sure, was an illusion. If he ended up dying, then there was still a very likely chance that he would only end up back in the real world.

Not that either world could be considered real anyway.

" Megumi, it's time to wake up." She said in a calm, sweet feminine voice as she tapped him lightly on his shoulder.

With the slight touch, he felt, a strange feeling of warmth ran through his body as he widened his gaze and looked up to see her staring at him with a smile on her face. She looked very frail and her eyes seemed to be trembling and sunken no matter how bright they seemed. Her hands were pale, and her hair almost seemed like it was about to begin turning gray.

The smile that had gone across his face at his first sight of her quickly dwindled down into a stale gaze of sympathy as he looked her in the eyes. She looked at him as well, and her hands quickly traced upwards, running gently through his hair.

He quickly got from the bed and gently removed her hand from his hair, before trying to assure her in his calm, masculine voice,

" I'll be fine, mother."

" Of course you will." She said, leaning forward as she threw her hands around him.

She got down from the bed and went out of his room after that, leaving him to contemplate everything that had just happened. He quickly got dressed as he got up from his bed, and immediately headed outside the house.

The sun was up and birds were chirping vibrantly. He turned his head to look around and noticed that there wasn't any other building in the surrounding areas other than there. With his mother's current condition and the place he found himself in, he didn't know what to feel at the moment.

But he had business to attend to, and immediately after stretching for a few more seconds, he grabbed the sword and crossbow lying before him and ran off into the distance. Their house was not far from the forest, and on getting there, he could already hear the chatter of people in the woods.

Moving closer, he could see them, and they seemed to be coming from the opposite direction, all while dressed in adoring white attires. The few women who were with them were wearing yukatas, while the two men leading upfront were wearing lightweight, white yukata robes that reached past their knees.

There were soldiers, over a hundred, wearing uniforms with intricate designs of white and blue behind them. They marched graciously along the forest path with their spears firmly held upward while they continued to chant words that he fully understood.

*"May the divine ones weigh the hearts of the departed!"*

"Hear our humble plea, oh gods of old!"

"May your sacred will be done, as you grant us our deepest desires!"

"May those who defy your glorious wisdom be humbled beneath your majesty!"

"We vow to serve you, oh radiant gods, with devotion and reverence!"

"Until our mortal breath fades, and our spirits return to your realm!"

" What the hell?" He thought, quickly hiding behind one of the trees, watching them as they slowly marched past him.

He could feel a menacing presence that kept growing the closer they came, and it seemed to be coming from one of the few upfront. Now he knew why the soldiers he saw by the once river shore were there in the first place, and why they were there in the first place.

Clearly, shadows were dancing in daylight, and without even having to look at those shadows, he was able to find out what was hiding behind them. Gods, people, disciples, and sacrifices. The story he found himself in was at a climax, and somehow, he was sure he was going to find himself in the center of it all.

" I should continue hunting as I've planned, lest I go after them and end up getting myself killed." He thought, continuing further into the forest.

He felt as if he already had a mental map of the entire forest stored in his head as every place around it felt very familiar to him - what places he could find animals to hunt, and what type of animals there were, were all things he could remember very vividly, and he couldn't tell if he had been living here for a very long while, or only just arrived.

Moving carefully through the forest, and onto the open green grounds, he was able to spot two rabbits hopping amidst the shrubs. He was standing on top of the branch of a tree while looking down at them with keen eyes.

These creatures were very cautious animals, so even the slightest noise could be able to startle them. He only had one chance to strike, and would end up losing if it failed.

He leaped forward from the tree with his crossbow ready to fire, and just as he flew downward, the arrow from his crossbow pierced one of the rabbits, while the other one quickly took to its heels. Stretching his hand forward, he was able to get a hold of the other rabbit which continued to squeak as it tried to break free from his grip.

The move he made just now to catch them was a very risky one and should have gotten him hurt, but strangely enough, he didn't feel a single thing. He tied up the living rabbit and grabbed the other one by its hind legs as he quickly returned home.

He followed the open path that led to his house - the same one he had seen the strange army walking through and he felt odd knowing that he hadn't the sound of them marching back to where they had come from ever since then.

" Where could they have gone?" He thought, continuing onward.

He could see slight smoke particles running through the air the closer to his house he got, and his heart only continued to beat faster the closer he got. When moonlight trembles on a blade, then it would only be a while before the...

There it was, the loud chant of the army he had been expecting to pass by for so long was finally coming back, and this time, he froze completely. He could finally see a faint glimpse of the roof of his house and now knew where the thick black smoke was coming from.

There it was, the storm that had been waiting to break for so long. He could feel a a sudden sense of unease and rage building up inside him as he looked forward and a single tear fell slowly from his right eye.

They repeated the chance once again as they walked past, shoving him into the sides of the pathway while the leaders up front turned towards him with a sneer.

" Weeds in forgotten gardens, have no place amidst blossoming flowers." One of them said loudly.

Quickly dropping both of the rabbits he had with him, he quickly ran forward to see the house was almost on its way to burning down completely, and another sight lay just in front of the burning building - a lifeless body lying on the ground with a pool of blood around it.

His legs began trembling as he fell to his knees sobbing loudly. His eight-year-old sister was lying dead on the ground along with his parents, who were just to the side. They all had stabs to their hearts, with black flames furiously burning up their bodies.

He knelt there crying as he watched their bodies slowly disappear into nothing but ashes, and by the place where his sister once lay dead was a word written in blood...

*Brother*

" One, two, three, four, five, and a hundred more. Just wait, I'll kill the tropes first, then I'll deal with the remaining five."
