Chapter 51: The Great Slime

The viscous tentacle wrapped tightly around Neros’s arm.

The knight reacted instantly.

He drew his sword with his other hand.

SHING.

The blade sliced through the gelatinous mass. The tentacle fell to the ground.

"Don’t cut it!" Max shouted.

Neros turned his head toward him.

"What?"

Max pointed at the giant slime.

"That’s not a normal slime!"

He frowned.

"You can tell by the size."

The mass Neros had cut began to move.

The gel trembled. It swelled.

And then—

It took shape.

A new slime appeared on the ground.

This one was smaller, and its color was a deep red.

Dorian opened his eyes in surprise.

"I see..."

He tightened his grip on his staff.

"It’s a reproductive slime."

Max looked at him.

"Reproductive?"

Dorian nodded.

"When you cut it, it splits."

He pointed at the red slime.

"The separated parts create new creatures."

Then he looked at the giant slime.

"Normally they can merge again whenever they want."

He paused.

"But they don’t separate on their own."

The giant slime made the ground tremble. Its surface began to churn.

And then—

Dozens of tentacles shot out in every direction.

"Watch out!" Varis shouted.

The dwarf jumped back.

Dorian’s support magic shone over him.

His body became lighter.

A tentacle brushed past his beard.

Varis spun around.

He dodged another.

"Now this is a proper fight with a beast!"

Meanwhile, Moon lifted off the ground. Wind swirled around her feet. Her wings fluttered with excitement.

A tentacle passed beneath her.

"Close one!"

Max looked toward Varis.

"Hey!"

The dwarf turned his head.

"What?"

"Do you have explosives?"

Varis blinked.

"Explosives?"

Max frowned.

"Gunpowder? Oil? Anything flammable?"

Varis thought for a moment.

"In the back of the carriage there’s oil for starting campfires."

He raised an eyebrow.

"What do you want it for?"

Max smiled.

"I have a plan."

At that moment—

The red slime began to change.

Its surface twisted.

Its edges stretched.

And then it took shape.

The shape of a goblin.

The slimy creature ran toward the carriage.

Straight for the horses.

"Hey!" Varis shouted.

Moon raised her sword.

"You’re not touching them!"

The blade shone.

Cold flames shot forward.

The ground in front of the carriage froze.

The slime goblin was trapped in the ice.

But then—

The monster jumped.

Its body stretched in the air.

The gel opened like a net.

Moon barely had time to react.

The viscous net caught her.

It dragged her against a tree.

THUD.

She stuck to the trunk.

Her wings trapped.

Her arms immobilized.

"Moon!" Max shouted.

The slime net tightened.

Moon cried out.

"This is disgusting!"

Max pointed at her.

"Moon! Fire is its weakness! Breathe fire!"

Moon blinked.

"Huh?"

Then she opened her mouth.

"Oh!"

A burst of flames shot out.

The fire engulfed the net.

The gelatin began to bubble.

It turned black.

Then it charred.

CRACK.

The slimy structure shattered into pieces.

Moon fell to the ground.

She quickly got up.

She shook her wings.

"That worked!"

She smiled.

Now she felt more confident.

She looked at the giant slime.

"I’m coming for you!"

She ran toward the center of the battle, dodging the monster’s attacks.

Neros was there.

Blocking with the flat of his blade.

He struck the tentacles to push them away, careful not to cut them.

Moon inhaled deeply.

And breathed fire.

The flames struck the giant slime.

The gelatinous surface lit up.

But—

Nothing happened.

The slime kept attacking.

Moon’s eyes widened.

"Huh?"

She breathed fire again.

The result was the same.

"Why isn’t it working?"

A tentacle shot toward her.

Neros blocked it.

THUD.

He shoved her back with his shoulder.

"Stay behind me!"

Meanwhile—

Sophie stood beside Dorian and Varis.

Several seals floated in the air, forming a glowing barrier.

Tentacles slammed against it.

THUMP.

THUMP.

Sophie took a deep breath.

"I won’t let it get close!"

Dorian nodded, focused.

Support magic continued to shine over Varis.

The dwarf spun between the attacks.

His axe struck the tentacles without splitting them.

He simply knocked them aside.

Meanwhile—

Max ran toward the carriage.

"I just need a second!"

He jumped inside.

And started searching.

"Where is it...?"

He opened a drawer.

Tools.

He closed it.

He lifted a box.

Ropes.

He tossed it aside.

"This dwarf has a disaster in here!"

Then he activated the Echo Illusion Necklace.

The gem glowed.

Two copies of Max appeared outside.

The clones started running around the slime.

"Hey, slug!"

"Come get us!"

The tentacles changed direction.

They chased the clones.

Max kept rummaging through the carriage.

"Come on..."

He opened another compartment.

Utensils.

Knives.

A pot.

Max sighed.

"Does he seriously cook inside the carriage?"

He kept digging through the chaos.

"Where the hell does he keep the oil?!"

Max continued searching through the mess.

He pushed aside a bag.

Pulled out a frying pan.

Then opened another drawer.

Nothing.

He growled.

"This dwarf lives in a landfill!"

Then something caught his attention.

A boot.

It was lying in the corner of the carriage.

Max frowned.

"Why is there a single boot here...?"

He picked it up.

Something clinked like glass inside.

Max looked inside.

And smiled.

Inside the boot was a small glass bottle.

About three liters of oil.

Max pulled it out.

He raised it in front of his eyes.

Shook it a little.

The liquid moved inside.

He estimated the amount.

He smiled.

"Yeah... this is enough."

He jumped out of the carriage.

The fight was still raging around them.

The clones were still running.

The slime’s tentacles chased them.

Max ran toward Sophie, Dorian, and Varis.

"Sophie!"

The cat girl turned her head.

"Yes?"

Max raised the bottle.

"Do you have any explosive seals?"

Sophie blinked.

"Explosive?"

Max nodded.

"Something I can activate whenever I want."

Sophie thought for a moment.

Then she pulled out a sheet of paper.

She began drawing with magical ink.

"I can make one."

The ink glowed as she traced the symbols.

"But to activate it..."

She lifted the paper.

"...you have to touch the ink."

Max smiled.

"Perfect."

Sophie looked at him.

"Perfect for what?"

Max pointed at the giant slime.

The massive gelatinous body kept attacking with its tentacles.

"That slime is very tough on the outside."

He paused.

"But not on the inside."

Dorian’s eyes widened.

"...don’t tell me—"

Max nodded.

"Yep."

He raised the bottle of oil.

"I’m going to soak myself in oil."

He pointed at himself.

"Go inside the slime."

And he smiled.

"And turn myself into a human bomb."

There was a second of silence.

Dorian covered his mouth.

And started laughing.

"Pfff—!"

He tried to hold it in.

He couldn’t.

"HAHAHA!"

Sophie looked horrified.

"That’s extremely dangerous!"

She pointed at Max.

"You’re insane!"

Varis crossed his arms.

He looked at Max with respect.

"You are very brave."

He nodded solemnly.

"To think you would sacrifice yourself like that..."

Max raised a hand.

"Sacrifice myself?"

He pointed at his ring.

"I have fire resistance."

He shrugged.

"Don’t worry."

Sophie still looked nervous.

But she finished the seal and handed it to him.

"Just... touch the ink when you want to activate it."

Max stuck it onto his arm.

Then he opened the bottle.

Without hesitation, he poured it over his head.

The oil ran through his hair.

Down his face.

Across his clothes.

It dripped all over his body.

In seconds he was completely soaked.

Varis blinked.

"Wow."

Max closed the empty bottle.

He tossed it aside.

He looked toward the giant slime.

The tentacles kept slamming against Sophie’s barrier.

Moon and Neros were still fighting at the front.

Max rolled his shoulders.

Like someone preparing to dive into water.

"Well."

He smiled.

"Here I come."

And he ran straight toward the giant slime.
