Refusing to Remarry: Mr. Hawthorne, You Are Out-Chapter 24: Do You Like Raine?
Raine Sinclair put away her phone and turned around, only to notice something was off with the two men behind her.
"What are you guys talking about?"
Why does the atmosphere feel so tense?
"..." Mason Sullivan choked on the breath he’d been holding back, desperate not to let Raine Sinclair know what they were actually arguing about. He pretended to fuss with the hair on his forehead and changed the subject, "Nothing! Just... talking about random stuff!"
Leon Grant glanced at him, then said to Raine Sinclair, "We were talking about your childhood."
"Huh?" Raine Sinclair was stunned for a moment, then gave Mason Sullivan a look of utter disdain. "You weren’t telling him about one of your embarrassing moments, were you?"
"When have I ever done anything embarrassing? Don’t go spreading nonsense!" Mason immediately stopped her, terrified she’d actually bring up things from the past!
Unfortunately, it was already too late. Raine Sinclair blurted out, "Not embarrassing? Who was the one beaten up by three neighborhood kids, searching the ground for his teeth, and in the end I had to come help teach them a lesson!"
When she was little, Raine Sinclair was pampered at home, never letting herself be wronged, and she was fiercely loyal!
Seeing her little brother bullied, of course she had to step up for him!
And to little Mason Sullivan, Raine Sinclair was practically a fairy godmother descending from the heavens—not only did she save him, she made sure he got his revenge!
Those kids who bullied him never dared mess with him again...
From that moment on, Raine Sinclair became something special in his heart.
Talking about these memories privately is one thing, but Raine Sinclair brought it all up out in the open—and in front of his rival, no less. Mason felt even more embarrassed!
"Come on, that was ages ago! All right, let’s go order food! I’m starving!" Mason hurriedly dragged Raine Sinclair toward the private dining room, terrified she’d blurt out even more, like how he peed his pants at five!
If Leon Grant ever found out, how could he show his face in the future?
Raine Sinclair was having a blast, "Doesn’t matter how long ago, I still remember! It’s your fault for being so dumb as a kid."
"Say one more thing and I’m not speaking to you!"
Leon Grant watched the two joke intimately from behind, his eyes darkening with a hint of heaviness, before following them in.
During dinner, Raine Sinclair received a call from Silas Linton.
The moment she saw the caller ID, she hesitated.
Silas Linton played a big part in her marrying into the Hawthorne Family.
And Silas had always treated her like his own granddaughter...
Even after the divorce, Raine Sinclair still respected Silas deeply.
After thinking it over, she greeted Leon Grant and then stepped outside to take the call.
"Grandma?"
"Raine! You finally answered your grandma’s call!" Silas Linton’s voice carried a touch of sorrow.
Raine Sinclair felt a twinge of guilt, "Sorry, I’ve been busy these past few days, just trying to sort my feelings out, so..."
"Grandma understands. Sigh, it’s all my foolish grandson’s fault, hurting you!" Silas was full of remorse towards Raine Sinclair.
Such a good girl—for her to join the Hawthorne Family as their daughter-in-law was a blessing!
Too bad some people just didn’t know how to cherish it!
Being the grandma, she really worried herself sick!
Hearing these words, Raine Sinclair’s eyes instantly turned red, "Grandma, it’s just that fate wasn’t on our side."
At this point, no one is to blame.
Blame it on fate being ridiculously cruel.
Silas sighed again, then gently steered the conversation back, "Raine, Grandma hasn’t seen you in so long. Are you free this afternoon? Can Grandma come see you?"
"..." Raine Sinclair was about to refuse.
After all, she and Jonas Hawthorne were already divorced; from now on, she had no reason to keep contact with the Hawthorne Family.
But Grandma had called herself, and even suggested coming to see her...
Silas sensed her silence on the other end, sensing trouble, her tone growing soft and pleading, "Raine, don’t worry, Grandma just wants to see you, really. I won’t try to convince you to come back."
She’d spoken this far, nearly begging...
Raine Sinclair couldn’t bring herself to refuse.
"Grandma, I’ll come see you tonight, okay? I have a few meetings this afternoon."
"Good, good, good!" Silas was so happy she said "good" three times in a row. "It’s settled then! Tonight, Grandma will cook a few of your favorite dishes!"
Raine Sinclair’s nose tingled with emotion; after promising, she hung up the call.
She didn’t go back to the room right away, and leaned against the wall with a sigh.
Unbeknownst to her, silent hostilities had already started brewing in the dining room.
Ever since Raine Sinclair left, Mason Sullivan’s gaze hadn’t left Leon Grant for a second.
He just watched this guy gracefully eating a plate of fish, and started picking at him, "Raine loves fish. Aren’t you going to save some for her?"
"Really?" Leon Grant raised an eyebrow coolly, then smiled. "What a coincidence, I love it too."
Mason Sullivan was sipping his soup and nearly choked to death at those words!
"Cough cough cough!"
He stared at Leon Grant as if he were a monster!
As the stalemate lingered, Leon Grant suddenly asked, "Do you like Raine?"
If the last thing nearly made Mason choke, this one went straight for the jugular!
"Wh—what did you say?" he stammered in disbelief!
What the hell is Leon Grant up to?
They’d barely even met a few times and he’s already asking this kind of question?
Compared to Mason’s shock, Leon Grant was totally calm.
"You like Raine." This time, it was a statement.
Mason blinked and didn’t answer directly, instead retorting, "Raine? That’s quite a familiar way to call her."
"Why, is there a problem?" Leon Grant raised an eyebrow.
That one sentence stumped Mason; after a long pause, he mumbled, "Maybe calling her Ms. Sinclair is better!"
Just then, Raine Sinclair pushed open the door and walked in, catching the last sentence, "Calling me what?"
Before Mason could reply, Leon Grant jumped in, "Calling you Ms. Sinclair is too formal. From now on, let’s just use first names, Raine."
Raine Sinclair paused but didn’t object, "Sure."
All that Ms. Sinclair, Mr. Grant stuff is way too stuffy anyway.
Mason, seeing how readily Raine agreed, was biting back his frustration so hard his molars nearly cracked!
This Leon Grant—really knows how to get his way!
When Raine Sinclair sat back down, Leon Grant immediately pushed the whole plate of fish over to her.
She looked up, puzzled, as Leon Grant explained, "Mason said you like fish."
"Oh..." She replied in a daze, wondering what exactly Mason had said while she was out of the room?
When she checked on Mason, his expression seemed a bit... crazed?
Actually, Mason was beyond crazed; he wanted nothing more than to sock Leon Grant right in the face!
He’s seriously using my words to suck up to Raine?
And right in front of me?
This is just too much!!
Leon Grant, on the other hand, was unfazed as he continued, "Raine, you hadn’t finished telling us about Mason’s childhood embarrassments, had you?"
