Chapter 150: Chapter 150: Following Your Heart

She seems to have lost a lot of weight.

Her chin has become sharper.

Thinking back to when Candace Ford once complained to him about losing her appetite and being unable to eat because of pregnancy, feeling terribly uncomfortable.

Is Raine like that too?

He calculated the time when she became pregnant.

It was before the divorce.

There was a period when he gradually spent more time at home.

Occasionally during work, he would think of her smile and laughter.

The former workaholic, rarely putting aside his current tasks, canceled various dinners and gatherings, and began returning home early.

At that time, he never considered what his purpose was for coming home so early.

Looking back now, perhaps it was because there was someone dear to him at home.

If there were no beloved person, home would merely be a place to live, whether or not you return, what would it matter?

It’s a shame he realized too late.

And then, suddenly knowing she had met privately with Finn Wyatt, many things overwhelmed him at once.

At that time, he never expected that he, usually rational and calm, would completely lose his mind because she secretly met another man.

Only after so long did he understand that he was just jealous.

Later on, the developments became increasingly uncontrollable...

Sighing softly, Jonas Hawthorne gazed at the sleeping face of Raine Sinclair, until at some point, he unconsciously leaned in and kissed her forehead.

Raine.

I’m sorry.

As he stood up, a tear silently fell, landing at the corner of her eye.

When Raine Sinclair woke up groggily, she discovered the tear marks at the corner of her eye.

She touched them with her hand, somewhat puzzled, "Did I cry?"

But upon careful reflection, she realized she hadn’t had any dreams.

Or perhaps she dreamt something and forgot?

Sitting on the bed in confusion for a moment, Raine Sinclair then got up and walked outside.

Upon returning to Jonas Hawthorne’s room, she found that he was already gone, and the nurse was changing the sheets on his bed...

Her heart skipped a beat!

Raine Sinclair felt as if she were tightened up, immediately rushing over to grab the nurse and ask, "Where’s Jonas Hawthorne? How is he?!"

"Ah? Dr. Lawson, you..." The nurse turned around, seeing it was her, just about to remark on her waking, but was interrupted by John Franklin walking past the door.

"You’re late."

Four simple words, carrying a sense of regret and sorrow.

This tone instantly made Raine Sinclair associate it with an extremely bad outcome!

She felt as if she’d been struck by lightning, almost petrified in place...

Her legs felt as if filled with lead, unable to move the slightest bit.

She stood there dumbfounded, her mind momentarily void.

The nurse was about to explain, but John Franklin signaled her to stop.

Though puzzled, the nurse obediently left.

With no explanations, Raine Sinclair completely immersed herself in thoughts, "Did he... just leave like that? But he was perfectly fine just now!"

"Sudden heart pain," John Franklin explained.

He wasn’t lying, just that his words were on a different wavelength from Raine Sinclair’s understanding.

And, unaware as Raine Sinclair was, she thought Jonas Hawthorne had died.

Unforeseen, tears silently fell from her eyes.

"How could this be..."

She shook her head incredulously, taking two steps closer to Jonas Hawthorne’s sickbed, which had been fitted with new sheets, erasing any trace of his presence and warmth.

John Franklin stepped forward, patted her shoulder, and comforted, "Don’t be too sad. We gave our best efforts."

He had tried to keep Jonas Hawthorne, but who’d have imagined that workaholic only had thoughts for the company, who could stop him?

Fortunately, Jonas Hawthorne’s health was recovering well, still vigorous and strong, two days of coma with willpower restored, not a problem for a while.

Besides, the Hawthorne Family’s mess indeed couldn’t do without him.

Raine Sinclair had been harboring a final glimmer of hope, but with John Franklin’s comfort, she couldn’t hold back anymore, bursting into tears!

"Second brother! How could he die? Before I left, he was perfectly fine! How could this be?!"

Hearing this, John Franklin paused briefly, counter-questioned, "Who died? Who?"

"Ah?" Raine Sinclair’s crying halted, slightly befuddled, "Wasn’t it Jonas Hawthorne who died? Didn’t you say I’m late, you also tried your best?"

"You are late! Jonas Hawthorne just left. I tried to keep him for you, but he insisted on leaving, there’s nothing I could do." John Franklin said, adjusting his glasses.

Raine Sinclair blinked damp lashes, then carefully asked again, "Are you sure? Jonas Hawthorne really didn’t die?"

"Sure!" John Franklin swiftly nodded, with a look of disbelief, "Are you doubting second brother’s medical skills?"

"..." God knows how much Raine Sinclair felt like punching him upon hearing this!

Clearly, there’s nothing wrong, yet couldn’t he speak straightforwardly?

Made her think wildly, guessing all day, even thinking he really died!

John Franklin quickly noticed the little sister beside him went silent, upon turning back, her face was stormy like a Yaksha.

Warning bells instantly echoed in his mind!

"Raine, you... okay?" John Franklin raised an eyebrow.

Raine Sinclair took a deep breath, stubbornly turned her neck to look at him, angrily said, "Why didn’t you say he wasn’t in trouble earlier? Do you think watching me like this is fun?"

"Who’d have thought you’d be so pessimistic?" John Franklin felt no hint of guilt, instead saying, "Though, your reaction earlier was indeed a bit amusing. Knowing Jonas Hawthorne died, you instantly were overwhelmed by deep sorrow. Raine, would you have such a strong reaction for someone you don’t care about?"

Appearing as someone who saw through all, leisurely picking apart secrets buried in everyone’s heart.

Raine Sinclair frowned, instinctively retorting, "What deep sorrow? I don’t want him to die because of me, I don’t want to owe him!"

"But Raine, you know what? In life, you’re bound to owe something. Whether it’s affection, kinship, or friendship. Every day in the hospital, I witness countless separations by life and death." John Franklin retorted.

"What on earth are you trying to say?" Raine Sinclair asked indifferently.

John Franklin then laughed, turning slightly to rub her little head, indulgently said, "Second brother just doesn’t want you to regret. In life, none of us knows whether tomorrow or accident comes first. No matter what you do, follow your heart, do what you truly want to do."

Raine Sinclair fell silent.

Following one’s heart...

Yet, she never truly understood herself.

Once thought she could give her life to love, now avoiding all costs.

Once believed her choice was the most correct, now collapsing before faith without a single remnant.

While pondering, sudden urgent voices of the nurse echoed outside, "Dr. Franklin, Mrs. Hawthorne is awake!"
