Chapter 226: Fusion and Discovery

"Watch and see, lad," Bjorn said through the comm, his voice carrying that thick Viking accent that had grown familiar to Tatehan over the course of the battle.

Tatehan was in the middle of dodging a plasma blast when he glanced over at Bjorn, his visor tracking the Viking’s movements even as he fought off three soldiers who were trying to flank him from the right.

Bjorn reached down and grabbed a sword from one of the dead soldiers scattered across the battlefield, the blade still crackling faintly with residual energy. He hefted it in his left hand, testing its weight, and then he raised it alongside the axe he was already holding in his right.

And then he brought them together.

The moment the two weapons touched, a burst of cloudy dust erupted from the point of contact, swirling outward in a sudden, violent explosion of light and energy. The dust obscured the weapons for a fraction of a second, and then it dissipated just as quickly, revealing what Bjorn was now holding.

It was no longer a sword and an axe. It was something new, something fused actually. The blade of the sword had merged seamlessly with the head of the axe, creating a hybrid weapon that looked both brutal and elegant, its edge glowing faintly with the combined energy of both weapons.

Tatehan was stunned. He almost stopped moving, almost forgot he was in the middle of a fight, because what he had just witnessed was one of the coolest things he had seen on Mars.

"Fusion?!" Tatehan said, his voice rising slightly in disbelief as he threw a chakram that took out the soldier charging at him. "You have the ability to fuse anything?!"

Tatehan had witnessed a fusion only once since arriving on this planet and that was when he had fused two cores into one which had granted him an ability.

Then, seeing the cores fuse, seemed really cool to Tatehan. It had even left him in some sort of shock. Seeing two things combine into one right in front of your eyes was just pure magic!

Bjorn laughed, the sound deep and amused, as he swung the newly fused weapon in a wide move that cut through two soldiers at once, the blade cleaving through armor like it was made of paper. "Not anything, lad. Just weapons. I can fuse any two weapons together, combine their properties and make something stronger."

Tatehan’s mind was already racing, analyzing the implications of such an ability. Just weapons. That was still insane.

If it was just fusing anything, that would have made the ability very overpowered. It would have made Bjorn a mini god on Mars.

Imagine if it was full fusion, that meant he could go into the wastelands, take some bunch of creatures and fuse them into something more horrendous and powerful.

And if he had upgraded the ability in level, very high, he could take two houses and fuse them into one.

Or he could even take two humans and fuse them together to become one. That would be crazy.

Imagine fusing a short man with a tall man...

Or fusing a dying old man with a healthy man?

That felt kinda gross to think about.

Or fusing a scrawny man with a bulky hefty man, someone like Bjorn.

It would be mind-blowing!

But that was not it.

All this possibilities Tatehan had just imagined in his mind was with a different ability, fusion but wayy different than Bjorn’s.

Bjorn’s ability was fusing weapons, not objects but weapons. Only weapons.

The tactical applications alone were still staggering. You could take a broken weapon and fuse it with a functional one to repair it. You could combine two different types of weapons to create something that had the strengths of both. You could turn a collection of mediocre gear into something devastating.

"After we’re done fighting," Tatehan said, grinning beneath his helmet as he blocked an incoming strike with his armor and countered with a punch that sent the soldier flying, "you should help me fuse a lot of weapons. I’ve got a whole collection I could give to you."

Bjorn laughed again, the sound slightly breathless now as he drove the fused weapon through a soldier’s chest and kicked the body away. "Aye, we’ll see about that, Knight. Might cost you, though."

Tatehan shook his head, still grinning. He still found it crazy that this man:this jovial, laughing, weapon-fusing Viking, was the same person who had sat across from him at the summit looking like a block of stone, hostile and unwelcoming. The transformation was jarring. But in a good way.

Crazy stuff!

As they continued to fight, cutting through the remaining soldiers with brutal efficiency, Bjorn’s voice came through the comm again, this time more serious.

"We’ve killed hundreds of them now, aye?" Bjorn said, his tone shifting into something more tactical. "The fighters trying to block the base are falling apart. It’s time to tear into the place and take whatever weapons or good stuff we can find before reinforcements arrive."

Tatehan nodded, even though Bjorn could not see him. "Agreed. But we need to make sure it’s safe inside first. No point charging in blind if there’s an ambush waiting."

He activated his comm and switched channels, his voice cutting through to Lyra. "Lyra, you there?"

There was a brief pause, the sound of distant combat filtering through the connection, and then Lyra’s voice came back, pretty clear in a loud and hullabaloo battle as this.

"Yeah, I’m here. What do you need?"

"I need you to use your ability to check inside the base," Tatehan said, his eyes still tracking the battlefield, his chakrams spinning as he deflected an incoming strike. "Make sure it’s safe. See what’s in there."

"On it," Lyra replied without hesitation.

Tatehan watched as a black hole opened near the entrance to the base, the swirling void appearing out of nowhere, and Lyra stepped into it, disappearing from the battlefield in an instant.

A few seconds later, another black hole opened inside the base, and Lyra stepped out of it, her gun raised, her eyes scanning the interior.

And then she froze.
