Reborn Young Miss: Phoenix Burning Red-Chapter 488: Set in Stone (2)
Adrienne clapped along with the rest of the guests as Dylan celebrated his first birthday with his parents by his side. Tears shone in her eyes as she looked at her godchild. Dylan seemed happier and healthier than ever before. His laughter filled the room, bringing joy to everyone present.
Adrienne couldn’t help but feel a sense of happiness upon seeing Dylan’s wide smile as Gavin and Myrtle kissed him on his cheeks. Not only did Gavin and Myrtle manage to avoid death, but they also got the chance to raise their son in a loving and nurturing environment. Though Adrienne missed the days when she raised Dylan alone, she also knew he was better off now with his parents.
She found solace in Dylan receiving the love and support she had always wanted for him. Adrienne felt a deep sense of contentment as she watched him play and interact with his family, knowing that Dylan would be truly happy this time.
"Are you alright, Addie?" Lennox asked when he saw the tears in his wife’s eyes.
Adrienne nodded and wiped her tears dry.
"I’m just overwhelmed with happiness," Adrienne replied, her voice filled with emotion. "Seeing Dylan so loved and cared for, it’s everything I’ve ever wanted for him. I couldn’t be more grateful."
Lennox smiled, understanding the depth of Adrienne’s feelings, and they continued to watch Dylan with his parents.
"He might not be able to remember you, Addie, but I’m sure Dylan would want you to be happy as well." Lennox gently squeezed Adrienne’s hand. "You’ve done an incredible job, Addie. Dylan is lucky to have you as his mother, even if he can’t remember it."
Adrienne’s smile grew wider as she realized that Lennox was right—her happiness was important for herself and Dylan’s well-being. Dylan may not remember their time together, but Adrienne cherished each moment they shared. Deep in her heart, she knew that their bond was unbreakable, transcending time and space. She decided that no matter what timeline they were living in, she would continue to love and care for him just as she did in the past.
When Adrienne and Lennox returned home with the fifteen-year-old Noah, Adrienne excused herself and retired for the night. Noah looked at his mother worriedly before giving Lennox an inquisitive look.
"Is Mom alright? Is she sick?" He asked.
Lennox glanced at Noah and gave him a good look. He felt it was only yesterday when Adrienne brought him home and introduced Noah to him. Noah used to be shy and reserved, but he had grown into a confident and empathetic young man over the years. He and Adrienne raised Noah like their own and never made him doubt their love and concern for him.
"I think she’s just feeling a bit emotional tonight," Lennox replied, his voice filled with tenderness. "Seeing Dylan so happy brought up a lot of feelings for her. I’m sure she’ll be alright in the morning."
Noah nodded, mistakenly thinking his mother was reminded of her inability to conceive. He was aware that his adoptive parents had been trying for years to have a child of their own, but he never saw it as a reason to feel any less loved or valued. Noah often found himself grateful for the circumstances that brought him into their lives. Adrienne had been the one constant in his life, the person who was there for him through thick and thin. She had loved him unconditionally, just as she had loved his siblings. Noah couldn’t imagine his life without her, and he didn’t want to see her in pain.
Adrienne’s emotions seemed to settle as the days turned into weeks, and she found herself returning to her usual cheerful self. She immersed herself in her work, distracting herself from the longing that constantly bothers her. She and Lennox had sought the help of science to conceive.
The doctors had given them a glimmer of hope, but their efforts were met with disappointment month after month. Months went by, filled with doctor’s appointments, fertility treatments, and countless moments of waiting and wondering.
Adrienne began to question if motherhood was meant for her and if she was destined to only have a glimpse of it through her time with Dylan and Noah. It seemed that there were things in her past life she couldn’t change, and that included her fate of not being able to have her child.
"It’s not your fault, Addie," Lennox murmured against her hair as she broke down and cried into his arms. The embryo the doctors implanted in her womb failed to take, and Adrienne felt a crushing sense of defeat.
"Why can’t I just be a mother?" she whispered, her voice filled with anguish. "I’ve loved Dylan and Noah as if they were my own, but it’s not the same. I want to feel the bond of carrying a child within me, feeling their kicks and hearing their heartbeat."
Lennox held her tighter, his own heart breaking for Adrienne. He wished he could take away her pain.
"Addie, you are a mother," he said softly, his voice laced with sincerity. "You may not have carried a child in your womb, but you have nurtured and loved Dylan and Noah with every fiber of your being. Just because biology didn’t give you the chance to conceive doesn’t make you any less of a mother."
Tears continued to stream down Adrienne’s face as she listened to Lennox’s words.
"But you wish for us to have a child, Len. Didn’t you say you wanted to have a daughter?"
Lennox ran his fingers gently on her long, dark hair and smiled as he looked at her face.
"When you woke up from a coma, I anticipated that there were some things I needed to give up. Perhaps having a daughter is one of them. But that doesn’t mean our family is incomplete, Addie," Lennox continued, his eyes filled with unwavering love. "We have Noah, and he is more than enough for me. I don’t need a biological child to feel complete. I just need you."
"But Len..." Adrienne wasn’t willing to accept it, though.
"Don’t stress yourself too much, Addie." Lennox continued, his voice filled with sincerity. "If we never have a biological child, that’s okay. It doesn’t define our happiness. I’m alright as long as you are with me. I’d choose you over anything else in this world."
Adrienne looked up at Lennox, her eyes filled with gratitude and sadness. She knew how much he had hoped for a daughter and how much he had longed to experience the joy of raising a child from infancy. And yet, he was willing to give up yet another dream for her. She couldn’t bear the thought of him sacrificing his desires for her sake.
"But if you want to continue, we’ll keep trying. We won’t give up. Just tell me whenever you want to stop." He added.
Adrienne sniffed, her tears soaking Lennox’s shirt. She wanted to believe his words, but the weight of disappointment felt unbearable. Her heart ached for the child she longed to hold in her arms—the child she could call her own.
The pain seemed to overshadow every other joy in her life. She wondered if she was being punished for something she couldn’t remember—her past sins haunting her in the form of empty ultrasound images and negative pregnancy tests. It seemed to her that her fate of being unable to bear a child was already set in stone.
But as Adrienne grieved, Lennox remained steadfast by her side. He held her close, whispering words of comfort and love, reminding her they were together. Despite the pain and disappointment they had endured, she knew that they still had each other.
