Reborn Young Miss: Phoenix Burning Red-Chapter 479: Break Free (1)
Adrienne couldn’t believe it. She couldn’t believe Alistair was dead. It also wasn’t lost to her that the way he died was the same as Ayla in her previous life. Alistair had pushed Ayla to fall to death, and it was hauntingly familiar to Adrienne.
She looked at her husband lying on the stretcher as the ambulance drove them to the nearest hospital to treat his injuries. Lennox received quite a bad beating from Alistair. Adrienne looked worried, as she had never seen her husband in such a vulnerable state. Not when he was still bound in a wheelchair, not even when he was recovering from surgery, but now, seeing him on the stretcher, she felt a wave of fear and helplessness wash over her.
Adrienne knew Lennox faced Alistair to keep her safe. The hold she had on his hand tightened as she looked at his swollen eye and bruised face. Her entire body trembled at the thought that Lennox had managed to free her from the clutches of her dark past, but she couldn’t help feeling guilty for the pain he had endured.
Lennox sacrificed and risked everything he had for her sake. She knew he would do whatever it took to keep her safe and happy, but it pained her to see him like this. Adrienne wept silently as several emotions washed through her. She couldn’t bear the thought of him suffering any longer because of her.
When they finally arrived at the hospital, Adrienne was surprised to see Gavin and Myrtle waiting for them. Myrtle immediately rushed towards her and engulfed her in a tight hug. Myrtle was slightly trembling as she held on to Adrienne while Gavin ran to see Lennox as the latter was taken inside the hospital.
Gavin, his face filled with concern, took one look at Lennox and clenched his fists. He couldn’t believe the extent of Alistair’s brutality. Lennox was like a brother to him, and seeing him battered and bruised ignited a burning anger deep within Gavin’s chest. But he knew he had to remain composed for everyone’s sake. It would do them no good if he didn’t keep his cool.
"Adrienne," Myrtle whispered, her voice filled with relief and worry. "I’m so glad you’re safe."
Adrienne clung to Myrtle, her tears staining Myrtle’s shoulder.
"I don’t know what I would have done if Lennox hadn’t been there," she choked out. "He saved me, Myrtle."
Myrtle held her tighter, offering silent comfort as they watched the medical staff rush Lennox into an emergency room. Gavin joined them, his jaw set in determination.
"I heard Alistair is dead. Is this true, Adrienne?" Gavin asked, his voice low and steely.
Adrienne looked up at him with teary eyes before nodding.
"Yes. I haven’t heard all the details, but apparently, Hunter found them in a tight brawl, and Alistair came out on the losing end and fell over the balcony." She whispered, her voice barely audible above the ambulance’s wails.
Gavin led them inside the hospital before the media managed to spot them and hound them for details of Alistair Han’s death. He had no doubt it would cause a fiasco, considering everyone knew Alistair had been chasing Adrienne, and the news of his involvement with the underground criminal organization had come to light.
Adrienne was still filled with a mixture of emotions as they entered the hospital. She couldn’t shake the feeling that she was responsible for Lennox’s injuries.
Myrtle, seeing the anguish in Adrienne’s eyes, gently squeezed her hand and whispered, "You did the best you could, Adrienne. You did everything you could to protect yourself and those you love. I’m sorry I couldn’t lessen your burden."
As they waited for any news on Lennox’s condition, Adrienne wondered if she was finally free from her past and could finally lead a better life with Lennox. It never crossed her mind that something like this could happen—that there would be a day Alistair would die and she would be free from his madness and obsession.
A moment later, Hunter arrived and met them. Adrienne stood up and hugged her older brother, which Hunter returned.
"Are you alright?" He asked, ensuring she wasn’t hurt anywhere. Because of the commotion, he hadn’t had time to give her a good look.
"Yes, but Len..." Adrienne glanced at the room where her husband was being treated.
"Lennox would be taken care of," Hunter finished for her, his voice firm and reassuring. "We’ll make sure that he gets the best treatment possible."
Adrienne let out a shaky breath, her heart heavy with worry. She looked down at her trembling hands, still holding onto Myrtle’s.
"Thank you, Hunter," she whispered, her voice cracking. "I couldn’t have done this without you."
But when she saw men in police uniforms stationed outside Lennox’s room, Adrienne looked at her brother in confusion.
"What’s going on, Hunter?" She asked.
Hunter clenched his jaws, then took a deep breath. No matter Lennox’s intention, he needed to face the consequences of his actions.
"We’re just following the protocol, Addie. You have to understand that Lennox was the only one with Alistair when he fell to his death. We also found a gun on the scene. We need to figure out if Lennox was the one who did it or if it was an accident."
Adrienne felt a chill run down her spine at the mention of a gun. She looked at Hunter, her eyes wide with fear. Just when she thought she’d be able to live a peaceful life with Lennox, the universe had other plans. She couldn’t help but feel like she was trapped in an endless cycle of misfortune. Lennox had risked his own life to protect her and free her from the clutches of Alistair. And now, she couldn’t help but wonder if she had put him in danger.
As Hunter explained the situation to her, Adrienne could see the concern in his eyes. He was trying to protect her from the harsh reality of the situation, but she knew that she had to stay strong for both of them.
"You have to calm down, Addie. You and I must go to the station to give our statements, including Myrtle. If you want to help Lennox, we must prove that Alistair threatened you, forcing Lennox to retaliate. This is the best we can do for him." Hunter told her.
"Alright, we’ll go to the station and give our statements," Adrienne agreed, her voice barely above a whisper. She looked at Myrtle, who nodded reassuringly. "But what about Lennox?"
"You can go with your brother and Myrtle, Addie. I will stay here." Gavin answered. "I’ll call you if anything changes or we need your help." Adrienne nodded, grateful for Gavin’s support.
She hugged him tightly before joining Hunter and Myrtle to head to the station. As she walked away, she couldn’t help but feel worried about her husband. However, she was also willing to do her best to clear his name and bring him back home safely.
