Reborn Young Miss: Phoenix Burning Red-Chapter 457: Trouble in Paradise (1)
"I’m not sure," Adrienne replied, staring into the distance. "They said my father is also missing, Myrtle. They don’t know where he was or what happened to him."
"I have a bad feeling about this, Addie." Myrtle voiced her concern. "I don’t want you to go through all of that shit all over again."
Lewis attacking Adrienne, causing her to fall into a month-long coma, had left everyone in a state of shock and panic. It was too traumatic for them even to consider the possibility of Adrienne experiencing it all over again. They all knew Lewis blamed her for everything that occurred to the Jiang family.
"Reschedule my appointments for this week, Myrtle. I want to stay at home in the meantime." Adrienne said. She understood why Myrtle was worried and didn’t want to subject her and her family to more pain and suffering.
Myrtle nodded, agreeing with her plan. It would be best if Adrienne lessened her public appearance just in case her father was planning to attack her again. It was a difficult decision, but Adrienne knew it was necessary for her safety.
Adrienne upheld her word and went to see Elise’s remains at the morgue of the hospital. Myrtle came with her but decided to wait outside.
The person in charge inside the morgue gently lifted the white cloth covering the dead body on the table. Adrienne couldn’t believe her eyes as she saw Elise’s lifeless form lying there.
Elise’s face was pale and lifeless; her usually vibrant eyes were now closed and lifeless. Her face was swollen and bruised, and her hair was tangled in a mess as if she had been dragged along the road. It was a gruesome sight that Adrienne couldn’t unsee, but she had to remind herself that it was her sister who had met such an untimely fate. Who would have thought she would lose her life like this?
"I’ll give you some private time, Miss Jiang." The other person in the room said this before leaving the morgue. 𝕗𝐫𝚎𝗲𝘄𝐞𝕓𝐧𝕠𝘃𝕖𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝚖
There was a long silence within the room as Adrienne stared at Elise’s lifeless body. She didn’t feel any pity or sympathy for Elise. In her past life, Elise almost tricked her into selling her body at Elysian to become a plaything of wealthy businessmen, but in this lifetime, the one who walked that path was none other than Elise.
Of course, Adrienne knew the man Elise had recently seen. That man pretended that he came from old money and had deceived so many women in the past that it was only a matter of time before his true intentions were exposed. However, Adrienne never expected that Elise would lose her life in the process.
"You wanted to take everything from me. You wanted not only to ruin my life but everything I hold dear. Now, you pay the price, Elise. You aren’t the innocent person you pretended to be."
Adrienne’s heart was filled with anger as she stood over Elise’s lifeless body. She felt that Elise died too soon for her liking. Elise should have suffered more for the pain she caused. Adrienne’s desire for vengeance was not yet satisfied.
Adrienne lowered her head. Her face looked calm, but the fire of revenge burned brightly in her eyes. She wanted nothing but to revive Elise from the dead, only to inflict upon her even greater suffering.
No matter how much she convinced herself that she was doing just fine, deep down, she knew that her desire for revenge was consuming her. Her memories of her past life kept playing whenever she closed her eyes. Adrienne felt she would only be content and satisfied once she had exacted her revenge.
So, for Elise to die like this without her permission had awakened a primal rage within Adrienne; she felt an overwhelming sense of injustice as if the universe had robbed her of the opportunity to make Elise pay for her transgressions. She was even denied seeing Camilla and Elise suffer. Even Ayla’s death was beyond her control. Her enemies were dying one after another as if some unseen force were taking them out.
Adrienne was too exhausted to deal with anything else when she returned home that night. She collapsed onto her bed and covered her eyes with one arm. Her husband won’t be home anytime soon, and she was glad she had a moment to sort out her thoughts and process the day’s events in peace.
An hour later, the door creaked open, and Lennox stepped inside. Adrienne removed her arm and glanced at her husband. Lennox said nothing but sat on the edge of the bed with his back facing her.
"I heard what happened today from Myrtle," Lennox said, breaking the silence.
Adrienne sat up and glanced at her husband with concern.
"Elise is dead, and my father has gone missing. Tell me something I don’t know, Len."
Lennox remained silent. Half his face was covered in darkness as he stared into the distance. It was impossible for Adrienne to know what he was thinking.
"I have nothing to do with your sister’s death, Addie," Lennox said after a long silence. Adrienne wasn’t sure whether to believe him or not.
"And my father?" She continued to probe. "Where have you taken him, Lennox Qin?"
Lennox remained silent, avoiding eye contact, which only fueled Adrienne’s suspicion that he was involved in her father’s disappearance. She couldn’t shake the feeling that he was hiding something from her.
Lennox shut his eyes for a moment and took a deep breath.
"He’s being kept in an underground fight, Addie. His creditors wanted to retrieve the money he owed them. They won’t release him until the debt is paid in full." He finally said, but Adrienne knew he wasn’t telling her everything.
Lennox wasn’t lying, but she was certain he had omitted some important details. She could see it in his eyes.
"Is he alive?" She asked, "Please don’t tell me you are planning to kill him, Len. This isn’t something you should do. You promised me, remember?"
