Days turned into weeks, and Camilla could feel herself slipping deeper into depression. She had no one to turn to, no one to talk to, and no way out. Her only solace was the occasional visit from her lawyer, who kept her updated on the progress of her case.
As Elise said, since then, she has never picked up her calls or bothered to visit her. She couldn’t believe her daughter would cut off all ties with her to protect her reputation. Camilla had always been there for her, sacrificing everything to provide a good life for her daughter. It was a painful realization that their bond could be shattered and end like this.
Camilla’s state of mind deteriorated further. She refused to eat and barely spoke to anyone. The other inmates knew better than to mess with her, sensing the overwhelming weight of her sorrow.
Her meals remained untouched, and her weak body continued to waste away. The days blurred together as she became more and more isolated, her spirit fading with each passing moment. She lost the will to continue living anymore.
It wasn’t until one morning that a roaming prison guard found her lifeless body hanging from a makeshift noose in her cell. The news of Camilla’s tragic end spread throughout the prison and soon to the media, who covered the news with interest.
The news eventually reached Adrienne. She was snipping the leaves off her plants in the garden when her brother came to deliver the news before it went to the media.
"Camilla Yan is dead," Hunter said, with a mix of relief and contentment, knowing that the person who caused her adoptive mother’s death had died miserably and alone in her cell.
Adrienne lifted her dark eyes to look at her brother.
"Dead?" She asked, though her face remained neutral as if hearing her stepmother’s death didn’t mean anything to her at all. "How? What happened? Did the Ji family do something towards her?"
Hunter shook his head and sat on the bench across from her. They were in their mother’s garden at the Zhao estate. They could hear Noah and Scarlett’s laughter from a distance as the children played with Adrienne and Scarlett’s dog. Their laughter echoed through the air, starkly contrasting the somber news they had just received.
"No, they didn’t, but I heard Elise visited Camilla weeks before her passing. The prison guards said that Elise cut off all her ties with her mother and blamed Camilla for everything that happened in their lives. It must have taken a toll on Camilla and contributed to her declining health," Hunter said. "It’s heartbreaking to think that their once-close relationship ended on such a bitter note."
"Heartbreaking?" Adrienne scoffed and continued what she was doing before her brother’s arrival. The death of Camilla Yan was good news she didn’t expect to hear that day.
"Camilla Yan deserved it. She cannot blame anyone else but herself. She raised Elise like that. She’s the one who spoiled her rotten just to get her affection. Camilla Yan did all she could for Elise, and in the end, she was the one who paid the price for her stupidity. She was a horrible mother to Elise, and she deserved to die alone."
Her mother had died without anyone by her side in her previous life, and now it was Camilla’s turn to experience the same hell her mother went through. Adrienne thought Camilla deserved it. I
"That’s a little harsh..." Hunter frowned. He knew how cruel and heartless his sister had become after their mother’s accident many years ago. He thought having Camilla and Cayden sent to jail would somewhat lessen the coldness in Adrienne’s heart, but it looked like it didn’t.
"That’s the truth. I’m just relieved that the person who ruined our mother’s life is finally dead. I won’t feel guilty for not shedding any tears for her." Adrienne said it coldly.
"I know how you feel, Adrienne. I won’t lie and say that I’m not a little relieved, but I didn’t think she would end up dead like this." Hunter commented.
Adrienne remained silent, lost in her thoughts. She couldn’t help but wonder if things could have turned out differently if Camilla had made different choices. Things wouldn’t have spiraled out of control if she had been a better mother to Elise or had been more cautious in her dealings with the Ji family. But it was too late for what-ifs now. Camilla was dead, and there was no going back.
She knew that Camilla’s passing would bring closure to some of the pain and trauma that she had gone through, but it didn’t change the fact that she suffered from the aftermath of her mother’s accident for many years. What Camilla experienced couldn’t be compared to the helplessness she felt when she lost her mother in her previous life.
As for Elise, Adrienne wasn’t surprised at all when she heard Elise cut off ties with her mother to save her reputation. Elise must have been desperate, but being known as Camilla’s daughter and being linked to her mother was something she couldn’t bear. Adrienne always knew Elise was a selfish person, but to think she would go so far as to put all the blame on her mother was truly foolish, in Adrienne’s opinion.
"Camilla was unfortunate to have a cold-hearted daughter like Elise, but she could only blame herself for raising Elise the way she did. Anyway, Elise is Jiang, after all. You know the Jiangs don’t mind sacrificing one of their own for their own gain. Elise is the same, so I’m not surprised by what she’s done to her mother. To be hated and abandoned by her daughter was her karma."
Adrienne let out a sigh and rose from her seat. She wasn’t angry or sad. She was just relieved and content, knowing that the woman who caused so much pain and anguish in her life was gone. That was the only thing that mattered to her.
