Reborn Young Miss: Phoenix Burning Red-Chapter 386: Betrayal (2)
Adrienne knew it wouldn’t be easy for her husband to accept the truth, and she wondered how Lennox would deal with it. Even though she made every effort to help him learn the truth about the car accident that killed his father, the outcome of the investigation surprised her. She sought Katherine’s help to find a reliable investigator to help her locate some people related to Lennox and his father.
Lennox joined her on their bed and turned off the light beside her, with her back facing him. As the moonlight streamed through the window, casting a soft glow on their faces, Lennox finally broke the silence.
"I never thought it would come to this," he whispered, his voice filled with sadness and determination. "But I won’t rest until I find out the truth about what happened that night."
With a reassuring squeeze of his hand, Adrienne hummed in agreement.
"Just know that I’ll be on your side, Len."
"Have you collected enough proof? Are you certain about this, Addie?"
Adrienne rolled on her side to face her husband, seeing the uneasiness on his face. It broke her heart to see Lennox like this, but there was no turning back now.
"Don’t look at me like that, Addie. I’ve already considered that someone might have conspired against my father. Lennox’s voice wavered, his eyes searching for any sign of doubt in Adrienne’s expression. He continued, "But if we don’t uncover the truth now, who knows what they might do next?"
"Do you want to see the report now?" Adrienne asked.
Lennox nodded, his hands trembling slightly. He knew that whatever was written in that report could change everything they thought they knew about his father’s death. As Adrienne handed him the tablet with the report from her nightstand, he took a deep breath, bracing himself for the truth that awaited within its pages.
"I tracked everyone who worked with your father on the same project. I figured something must be feeding someone information about the project and your father’s next plans." Adrienne spoke cautiously, trying to maintain a calm demeanor despite the seriousness of the situation.
"I’ve compiled all the evidence and testimonies, and it seems that some questionable activities were happening behind the scenes." She added.
Lennox’s heart raced as he began scrolling through the report, his eyes scanning each name and detail meticulously. The information was overwhelming and thorough. A knot formed in his stomach as he dove deeper into the document.
"There’s a pattern here," Lennox muttered, his voice laced with disbelief. "Several people on his team had some history with my two uncles and Aunt Alyssa. Also, these three names keep popping up; they took the same days off throughout the project. Do you think they could be working together?"
"It’s possible, but Len, you must see who had access to your father’s schedule." Adrienne reminded him. She leaned in closer, pointing to a section of the document. "Look here; it seems only a select few had the authority to modify his calendar. We should cross-reference these names with the ones you mentioned earlier, but
"But what, Addie?" Lennox frowned before following her gaze over the document. His heart went cold, seeing three familiar names on it. Two were his father’s personal assistants, and the other was Butler Cheng.
"No, this can’t be..." He said it in disbelief.
Butler Cheng had practically raised him when his parents were at odds and had been fighting for his custody. Lennox couldn’t comprehend how Butler Cheng, who had been like a second father to him, could be involved in something so sinister. The realization hit him like a ton of bricks, leaving him confused and betrayed.
Even after the accident, the old man cared for him and never left his side. Lennox struggled to reconcile the image of the caring and devoted Butler Cheng with the sinister actions against his father.
"I do not doubt that he’s loyal to you, Len," Adrienne said solemnly. "But I cannot say he shared the same sentiment towards your father."
"What do you mean, Addie? How could he be involved in our accident? He wasn’t even there!"
However, before the accident, the phone logs showed Butler Cheng making calls from Richard’s study to the Qin family’s ancestral home. Whoever he was talking to was surely the mastermind behind the car accident.
"That’s not the point, Len. It’s possible he played a role behind the scenes, manipulating events to his advantage while maintaining a facade of loyalty towards you."
Adrienne knew how hard it was for her husband to have a clear mind to deal with this information. She had seen how close he was to Butler Cheng, making sure the old man wasn’t exerting too much regarding his work. Lennox relied on him for a long time, and Butler Cheng knew his preferences regarding food and other trivial matters.
The old man was also very helpful to her regarding running the household. He was the person to go to for advice on managing the staff and handling any household issues. He had welcomed her into Lennox’s home warmly, and he also treated his siblings well. Adrienne had always appreciated his loyalty and dedication, but now she couldn’t help but worry about how his relationship with Lennox would end after this.
"I heard that before your grandfather gave him to you, he’d been your youngest uncle’s personal attendant and confidante."
Lennox fell silent for a moment. He felt conflicted about what to do next. Harvey Qin had been missing for over three decades now, and the Qin family presumed him dead.
"That’s true, but he never mentioned Uncle Harvey to me, not even once. " He covered his face with both hands.
Adrienne sensed Lennox’s distress and reached out to comfort him.
"It’s understandable that you’re concerned about the impact this situation might have on your relationship with him," she said gently. "Perhaps it would be helpful to have an open and honest conversation with him about your feelings and any worries you may have."
