Adrienne entered the banquet hall with a tray of empty wine glasses in her hands. She struggled to navigate the crowd while keeping her head low. If anyone recognized her tonight, she would be doomed. 𝓯𝙧𝙚𝒆𝙬𝙚𝒃𝙣𝙤𝒗𝓮𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢
Ahead of her was Leigh. They were keeping a safe distance to avoid drawing attention to them. Her two guards were dressed as bodyguards with a small ribbon pinned on their lapels for the Gu guards to recognize them as a bodyguard of one of the guests tonight. Adrienne found it ridiculous as anyone could put a small red ribbon on their clothes and enter the banquet hall easily.
Despite the Gu family’s outstanding wealth, they refused to follow the norms and kept their security lax. If it were Lennox’s Jinxiu Garden, a guest must undergo several security measures before entering the manor or meeting its residents.
When she saw the exit of the banquet hall leading to the servant’s path, her eyes lit up. Adrienne rushed, but she hadn’t expected someone would obstruct her way.
"Ah, I thought she had more drinks for us, Alistair. We need to wait a little longer for the refill." The man next to Alistair said. His face was already red, indicating that he was already drunk.
Alistair didn’t respond to the man and chose to set his eyes on Adrienne’s form instead. Adrienne felt uncomfortable under his gaze, and she started to panic inwardly. Of all people, why did it have to be this man? It would be better if she and Alistair never got involved with each other.
After a long silence, the man noticed that neither Alistair nor the maid said a word. He furrowed his brows in confusion.
"Come on, man. You’re not thinking of hitting on a maid, are you? You refused many women before. Don’t tell me this is your type of woman?"
Alistair shot him a fierce glare. "You are spouting nonsense."
He then turned his attention back to Adrienne’s trembling form.
She was white as paper, and her strength had barely returned. Adrienne knew she wouldn’t make it this far tonight if it weren’t for the adrenaline rush. She could feel Kalista and Leigh’s eyes boring on her. Perhaps they were also wondering if Alistair had caught her.
"You can leave. Don’t bother to return." Alistair told her with a blank face.
Adrienne nodded slightly and dared not lift her face to meet his gaze. She didn’t know whether or not Alistair recognized her but dared not to stay longer before them.
She immediately left the banquet hall with Kalista and Leigh on her tail. She didn’t know how long it had taken her, but Adrienne heaved a deep breath when she stepped out of the mansion for the first time.
Kalista discarded the tray from her hand before putting Adrienne on her back.
"You’ve done well, Miss. You can leave the rest to us now." Leigh told her.
Adrienne started to feel dizzy again and shut her eyes. She was too disoriented to see what was happening but could hear several grunts and shouts from a distance.
Irina, who had been waiting for the trio to escape, had defeated several men easily. This time, she didn’t have to worry about Adrienne. Their backup team finally arrived, making it easier for Kalista to take Adrienne away.
Adrienne felt disgruntled as she felt herself being loaded into a car. She assumed that they must have escaped the Gu family’s premises, because she heard Kalista’s relieved sigh. She opened her eyes and saw Lennox’s familiar face as he held her body against him.
"Len? What are you doing here?" She asked. Adrienne wanted to break free from his hold to sit up properly, but she couldn’t move.
"Bringing my wife home, what else?" Lennox replied. However, there wasn’t a hint of amusement in his tone or eyes as he looked at Adrienne.
"You were careless this time, Addie. How do you expect me to face your brother if he finds out I failed to protect you during his absence? He will skin me alive, Addie."
"I know, and I’m sorry." Adrienne laid her head against his shoulder and sighed. "I won’t do it again. Please don’t tell my brother."
Lennox felt a headache hitting him. He wanted to scold Adrienne more, but seeing her willingly draw closer in his embrace, he could only pinch the bridge of his nose. He supposed this talk would need to wait until Adrienne was in the right mind to discuss it with him.
"Go, and proceed with Addie’s plans. Tomorrow, deliver that bastard to me. I will make sure he regrets targeting my woman!" He gave his order, which was answered with a resounding yes from his subordinates.
Irina was the first to leave, while Kalista and Leigh remained to clean up the trails they left behind.
When he heard from Leigh that Adrienne was drugged for real, Lennox dropped everything he was doing and rushed to the Gu mansion. He’d been waiting patiently outside the walls of the premises. If Adrienne couldn’t leave alone, Lennox was prepared to infiltrate the place and ruin everything in sight.
Lennox glanced at the woman in his side. Usually, Adrienne was cold and indifferent; she looked unperturbed despite the danger looming nearby. However, right now, she seemed unusually pale and weak. Ares Gu was truly courting death!
Who knew what would happen to her if he hadn’t insisted she bring Irina and the other guards with her tonight? Just the thought of Adrienne being harmed was enough to drive Lennox insane!
She passed out when the car drove away from the Gu mansion to bring her back to Jinxiu Garden. His heart ached to look at Adrienne. She looked delicate and small in his arms. As Lennox kissed her crown, his entirety was filled with the need to protect her from her enemies. He promised that as long as he was around, Adrienne would never have to suffer any loss ever again.
