Chapter 134: Know Thy Enemy (2)

When Gavin arrived at Jinxiu Garden, he expected to see his best friend in a foul mood. However, when he entered Lennox’s study, he found his best friend facing the window, looking at nothing in particular. Lennox looked calm, but distracted. Was Butler Chen lying when he gave him a call earlier informing him of Lennox’s episode?

"I heard about what happened. The client backed out from our contract signing and chose the Han Corporation at the last minute. Alistair Han must have pulled something to make them change their mind." He said, not bothering to greet Lennox.

Gavin didn’t expect that Lennox would ignore him. He narrowed his gaze and cleared his throat loudly. That effectively took Lennox’s attention, who then turned his wheelchair to face Gavin.

"You are here. Did you finish the meeting early?" His hair was messy and his black shirt was a little crumpled on its sleeves. There was a slight blush on his face. He looked like a teenager who got his first kiss with his crush.

Gavin felt a headache coming his way. He couldn’t fathom what Lennox was thinking at the moment. Lennox didn’t seem bothered by their sudden loss to Alistair Han and was preoccupied with thoughts of a woman. He’d never thought a day like this would come.

"No. I left because I heard you were throwing a fit earlier, but it seems evident that I am too late." He replied, before placing the folder he was holding on top of Lennox’s desk.

"What is it this time?" He asked, not beating around the bush this time. It was rare for him to see Lennox like this. Something must have happened before he arrived.

"What do you know about Addie’s relationship with Alistair Han?" Lennox met his curious gaze. "I want to know everything that happened between them."

"You should hear it from Miss Jiang then. There’s a limit to what we could find out about what goes on between them. Only Alistair Han and Miss Jiang could tell what really went down. Did you and Miss Jiang argue?"

Gavin knew that no other person could push Lennox to the edge right now except for Adrienne Jiang. Seeing that Lennox didn’t immediately answer him, it meant that Gavin was right. However, his best friend’s next words caught Gavin off guard.

"Addie rejected me." He muttered with annoyance.

Gavin blinked twice as silence descended upon him. He wondered if he heard Lennox right, but wasn’t this man before him so foolish to confess this early?

"You should have known this would happen. Did she say she wanted to break your deal?" He asked in response.

Lennox glowered at Gavin. Of course, he knew that, but words once spoken were like spilled water — there was no way he could take them back. Not that he was planning anyway.

"You think Addie would tell me willingly? I wouldn’t have asked you if I could get the answer from her. I want to know why Addie makes such a face whenever she thinks of that man."

"What face?" Gavin didn’t like to poke into his friend’s affairs, but this was Lennox. Any woman who could make this devil fall in love with her would gain such a terrifying ally and wealth. Aubrey would regret her decision later once she finds out that Lennox was more loaded with money than Jacob Qin.

What was known to the public was completely different behind the curtains. This was why Lennox was able to trick his relatives to this day.

"She has this expression as if he’d wronged her. Addie had a dead and lifeless look in her eyes when I mentioned his name. I feel like she isn’t targeting the Jiang family alone." Lennox explained. How could he not notice it? Though Adrienne kept her mask on, her eyes sometimes betrayed her unknowingly.

"She must have met him during her grandfather’s birthday banquet. I remember hearing that the Han family was invited. Of course, Huayi also received one, but I didn’t think it was important and chose not to attend. Do you want me to ask Irina to probe further?"

"No, we can’t do that." Lennox immediately replied. "Addie is already upset that I’ve given her Irina. She thought we were watching her rather than being concerned with her safety. If I hadn’t said I would take Irina back after she finished retrieving the children, she wouldn’t have agreed to take her."

Gavin removed his outer coat and placed it on the couch before taking a seat. He couldn’t believe he had to leave his meeting prematurely just to hear that Lennox was being rejected by a woman. If it was in the past, he wouldn’t believe it, but knowing Adrienne Jiang, Gavin wasn’t surprised at all.

It was said that a woman’s heart was the most poisonous, but this was the first time Gavin had met someone as shrewd as that woman. 𝕗𝐫𝚎𝗲𝘄𝐞𝕓𝐧𝕠𝘃𝕖𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝚖

From the moment they met her, he knew that Adrienne was extremely vigilant and had never fully trusted the people around her. She had even persistently resisted accepting a bodyguard from them for months. According to Irina’s earlier reports, Adrienne had just raised her personal funds by extorting money from her uncle. She also didn’t divulge much information to Uncle Mo and Mother Wang and mostly relied on her older brother’s help.

Adrienne Jiang had been so hard to grasp from the very beginning that even Gavin couldn’t understand her intentions. How could a weak, helpless girl suddenly change into a devious young woman overnight? He would never understand.

"What do you plan to do then? Even if you know what’s between her and Alistair Han, it won’t change her mind." He pointed out. A woman like Adrienne Jiang meant trouble, and Lennox should know what’s at stake by now.

"Right, but it won’t hurt to know your enemy. The more I know about Alistair Han, the better. I know he was one of the reasons why Addie rejected me, but I don’t plan to give up. I won’t lose to him."
