Chapter 49: Chapter 49: Star Survival 9

After more than an hour, Nan Chu finally found a suitable place.

She discovered a small pond, which was formed by underground water seeping through.

Nan Chu first cleaned out all the previous water in the pond, then cut some branches to cover the pond to prevent animals from drinking from it.

She then began setting up camp. During the two-hour search for a campsite, Nan Chu gathered a lot of vines and tree bark, which could be used as rope.

Nan Chu found a fallen tree and used the space around it to set up her shelter.

After more than two hours, Nan Chu had finished building her shelter.

Once it was set up, Nan Chu took out pine branches to repel mosquitoes.

Nan Chu stood at a distance, eating mangoes.

Yu Miao and Hu Liang also chose to search for freshwater first and planned to set up their camp nearby.

Both of them moved in a similar direction and discovered a pond around the same time.

This pond was also stagnant water, but the two started cutting the nearby trees to build a shelter.

Xue Yifan and Hou Ming chose to find a suitable place to set up camp first, planning to search for food and water only after the camp was built.

Zhai Xueying, Lai Yuzhu, and Wu Jun decided it was better to find food first, only setting up their camp once their food search was successful.

After eating the mango, Nan Chu took her water bottle and went to the small pond to fetch water.

On her way back from fetching water, Nan Chu spotted a Redback spider.

The Redback spider is one of the most dangerous animals in Australia and one of the top ten most venomous spiders in the world.

Nan Chu said, "Go around, there’s a Redback spider ahead."

The cameraman heard her and pointed the camera towards it, indeed capturing the Redback spider.

Nan Chu and the cameraman went around the spider and returned to the camp.

Back at the camp, Nan Chu boiled the fresh water she had collected and once it cooled, stored it in the water bottle.

With both water and food secured, and while it was still daylight, Nan Chu went back to cut more pine branches.

Though she had driven away the mosquitoes, she knew they would return at night.

Because during summer, it doesn’t get completely dark until after eight in the evening.

Mosquitoes were more abundant at night, so Nan Chu piled all the pine branches onto the fire. The smoke helped reduce the number of mosquitoes.

The other guests also used pine branches to repel mosquitoes.

With two previous recording sessions, the guests’ survival experience had grown.

One peaceful night passed.

At dawn, Nan Chu got up and practiced a set of martial arts forms, then sat down for meditation and breath regulation.

After finishing her meditation, Nan Chu went to the small pond to fetch water.

Just as she boiled the water, the cameraman’s walkie-talkie buzzed. He handed the walkie-talkie to Nan Chu.

"The survival competition begins!"

The other guests were roused from their sleep by the cameramen.

They were utterly bewildered—what competition?

"All guests must reach the island’s highest point where the red flag is planted by 11 o’clock. Those who don’t make it won’t receive any supplies for the next episode."

[Whoa, the production team is really stirring things up.]

[Looking forward to all the guests starting from scratch next episode.]

[Sister Nan will definitely make it before 11. Didn’t you see she’s already set off?]

[While the other guests are still bewildered, Nan Chu is running fast. Her speed is not slow at all.]

[As expected of our Sister Nan, truly impressive.]

[My husband has also set off.]

[Jun Jun, hurry up!]

[Nan Chu is moving so fast, yet the cameraman, carrying all the equipment, can easily keep up.]

[Cameramen are the strongest, like those who film at the Olympics or in survival shows...]

[Cameramen only take up photography once they have no rivals left.]

Nan Chu had departed for quite a while when the other guests finally started to leave.

Zhai Xueying was the slowest. She started late and, unfortunately, the path she chose was hard to traverse, overgrown with shrubs and uneven.

Nan Chu took only a few dozen minutes to reach the highest point of the island where the red flag was planted.

The first to arrive, she received a 150ml bottle of mineral water, nothing else.

Taking the water, Nan Chu headed back.

Xue Yifan was the second to arrive and also received a bottle of mineral water.

Hu Liang was the third to arrive, receiving a bottle of mineral water as well.

...

...

By 11 o’clock, Zhai Xueying and Hou Ming had not arrived.

Unluckily for Hou Ming, he had chosen a route through the Red Forest and encountered a saltwater crocodile.

Because of the crocodile, Hou Ming had to turn back and flee, and afterward, he was too scared to move.

[Hou Ming is really unlucky.]

[The ones who didn’t make it just chose the wrong paths. Had they taken any other route, they could have made it.]

[Luck plays a big part.]

[Nan Chu is really impressive, reaching the destination in just a few dozen minutes, whereas other guests took over an hour.]

[Nan Chu was even practicing martial arts in the morning, she seems to have a bit of skill.]

On her way back, Nan Chu also foraged for food and found some edible wild vegetables.

These wild vegetables could be cooked and eaten back at camp.

By the time she was cooking the wild vegetables, it was already noon. The sun was high in the sky and very scorching.

After eating, Nan Chu returned to her shelter to rest.

Nan Chu quietly cast a little wind spell to cool herself.

Zhai Xueying and Hou Ming returned to camp during the hottest part of the day, feeling slightly dizzy.

A sign of early heatstroke.

They drank some water and quickly went to rest.

Around four o’clock, Nan Chu left her shelter and went out for a walk.

Sister Zhuang had specifically instructed her not to rest too much during the recording—she should explore more so that the broadcast would capture more footage of her.

More exposure would help her gain popularity and secure more work.

Her primary job was acting; Sister Zhuang hoped she would land more roles in dramas rather than variety shows.

Nan Chu gathered a lot of firewood and also found some wild chives.

However, Nan Chu didn’t pick the wild chives; if she brought them back, grilling them like that wouldn’t taste good.

On her way back, Nan Chu ran into Lai Yuzhu.

Lai Yuzhu saw Nan Chu and called out, "Nan Chu, are you out collecting firewood?"

"Yes." Nan Chu nodded.

Lai Yuzhu asked, "Nan Chu, did you find a water source?"

"Yes, Sister Yu Zhu, would you like to fetch some water?"

"I would." Lai Yuzhu nodded.

Lai Yuzhu then followed Nan Chu back near her camp, and Nan Chu led her to the small pond.

After Lai Yuzhu collected water, Nan Chu kindly reminded her, "Sister Yu Zhu, remember to boil this water before drinking."

"I know that much," Lai Yuzhu said, pulling a face.

[She’s not an idiot; she knows not to drink raw water in the wild. Saying that on purpose—what was her intention?]

After the past two survival broadcasts, Lai Yuzhu had gone home and checked the other contestants’ public perception.

Nan Chu had the best reputation, especially after killing a wild rabbit in the last survival show.

Lai Yuzhu was a bit envious, so even Nan Chu’s well-meaning reminder was overinterpreted by her.

Nan Chu heard Lai Yuzhu’s innermost thoughts and gave a fake smile, "Sister Yu Zhu, if there’s nothing else, I’ll head back to the camp."

"Alright." Lai Yuzhu nodded.
