Reborn With a Money-Making System: Ruined Actress to Nation's Treasure-Chapter 78: The Man They Call Mr. X
"Mr. Brixton, the president of Goldenline Bank is on the line," Lando’s secretary informed him over the phone.
Lando answered simply, "Put him through."
Within seconds, the call connected to Raul Crestwell, the president of Goldenline Bank. His voice carried a slight tremor when he spoke. "Mr ... Lan?"
There were plenty of rumors floating around about him; people outside Zentra liked to whisper that he was called Mr. X. But in reality, Lando had been using the name Mr. Lan from the very beginning. Only a few people close to him, like his secretary and assistant, knew his real name.
Still, because the company needed an official figure to list as the President of Zentra, his most trusted subordinate took that position on paper. Everyone, however, knew that man was nothing more than a puppet working under the mysterious Mr. Lan.
"Mr. Crestwell," Lando said calmly. "I believe you already know what this is about, and why I wanted to speak with you directly."
"Mr. Lan, are you serious?" Raul’s voice shook even more this time. "Why are you suddenly trying to withdraw all your money from your account? Please, reconsider this, Mr. Lan. There must be some misunderstanding between us."
Lando tapped his fingers lightly on the table, staying silent for so long that Raul began to panic. How could he not panic?
Lando wasn’t an ordinary client, he was an elite depositor with an account worth billions of dollars. If he suddenly withdrew all his money, the bank would lose its cash stability.
On top of that, other billionaires would start wondering why someone like the owner of Zentra suddenly stopped trusting Goldenline Bank. They might think the bank was facing an internal crisis and rush to pull their own funds out too.
Investors would also think twice or ten times over before putting money into Goldenline Bank’s stock.
In short, Lando could trigger a terrifying domino effect, one that could destroy the entire bank. That’s why Raul, the president of Goldenline Bank, called him the second he heard the news.
Yet just a few moments earlier, the bank had said they needed at least a week to resolve Helcia’s issue.
What an irony.
"I’ve heard some rumors," Lando finally said, his voice calm but icy. "That your company isn’t as trustworthy as it claims to be or worse, that it’s been protecting someone who committed violence against her own child."
He let out a low sigh. "I don’t like that, Mr. Crestwell. If this news ever reaches the media, your bank might not survive the fallout."
"W-what do you mean, Mr. Lan?" Raul stammered. "I don’t know anything about this. Please, explain the situation to me. I promise I’ll handle it immediately."
"You don’t know?" he asked, pretending to sound surprised. "That’s surprising, considering the person you’ve been protecting also happens to be one of your priority clients."
Raul replied, "I ... really don’t know anything, Mr. Lan."
"Addison Davenport," Lando said evenly. "She’s the wife of Gideon Davenport, someone who’s also been one of your top clients for a long time. Lately, I’ve heard from a close acquaintance that his wife was forced by Addison to take out a one-million-dollar loan against her will. But the bank, apparently, didn’t care about the victim."
"Oh my, Mr. Crestwell." Lando’s tone shifted slightly, almost like a gossiping middle-aged woman who had just heard some juicy news. "I really don’t tolerate bullying, and I certainly won’t support those who do."
He added, "Besides, this acquaintance of mine is ... special. He’s like a brother to me, so when he told me that his wife suffered because of your bank’s negligence, I realized I can no longer trust you to handle my money."
The moment he heard that, Raul grew even more panicked, so much that he nearly dropped the phone from his hand. "May I know your acquaintance’s wife’s name, Mr. Lan?"
"Helcia," Lando said softly, his voice lowering as he spoke her name. "Helcia Orszebet. She’s Addison’s stepdaughter, and I believe your bank has already received a report from her lawyer stating that Mrs. Davenport forced her to take a loan from your bank."
"Please ... give me a minute, Mr. Lan," Raul said quickly.
Lando rolled his eyes, clearly annoyed that Goldenline Bank hadn’t even bothered to escalate his wife’s case to the higher-ups until next week just a few moments ago.
While waiting for Raul to reconnect, he picked up the pen Helcia had given him and started writing something on a sheet of paper. ’Basta—’
He stopped midway, realizing he shouldn’t write something unpleasant using such a precious pen. With a faint sigh, he crossed out the word and wrote something else instead: ’What a horrible person.’
Not long after that, Raul reconnected with him. "I see the problem now, Mr. Lan," he said, clearing his throat. "It appears there were indeed ... irregularities in the approval process for that loan. Mrs. Davenport seems to have used her internal influence to push it through without the proper review."
Lando’s eyes narrowed slightly. "I believe she also has some sort of close connection with one of your higher-ups, because ... this whole thing is strange, Mr. Crestwell. How could someone like Ms. Orszebet, who has no business background at all, received such a massive loan?"
"Let’s be honest," he continued. "Everyone already knows she’s Gideon Davenport’s illegitimate daughter, and the rumors about her rocky relationship with her half-sister are everywhere."
Before their marriage, Lando had never met Helcia in person, but he’d heard plenty of gossip about her.
Some said she was mute because she rarely spoke. Others claimed she was a devil disguised as an angel. And a few even went as far as to call her a future temptress, just like her mother, a woman who supposedly climbed into rich men’s beds for power.
When Lando’s father asked him to marry her, he honestly didn’t expect much. He thought the marriage would be nothing more than a formality on paper, and he wouldn’t bother to get involved in her life.
After all, he simply wanted her father to stop bothering him about his single life. 𝕗𝚛𝚎𝚎𝐰𝗲𝗯𝗻𝚘𝚟𝚎𝗹.𝕔𝐨𝕞
However, when they finally met for the first time, he was taken aback by her beautiful smile. Instead of marrying a quiet, expressionless woman, his wife turned out to be a chatterbox, an adorable chatterbox.
