Reborn: The Tyrant's Obsession-Chapter 339: What was love to her?
Ella realized that nobody mentioned Adrian’s elder brother in the King Family. Even the servants here were well-trained so they would never misspeak randomly.
But when she realized that, it was too late. The man had released the reins despite her refusal.
And when the gentle horse had stomped forward violently, Ella knew that what had to go wrong had already gone wrong in that moment.
And all of it connected back to Lilith who brought the horse, lured Adrian away with the idea of the race and of course, bribed the servant.
Ella sneered. What was worse was that the servant confessed his one-sided truth while she was about to lose her life in the woods.
It wasn’t far-fetched. In her previous life, almost all the servants stirred trouble for her because of Lilith. They worshipped the ground Lilith walked on.
In this life, people might have seen her in a better life.
But if she were to be compared to Lilith, then nobody, including Adrian’s grandparents, would pick her over Lilith.
All the effort she has put, all the care she has shown for still won’t be enough in these people’s eyes.
To them, she would never be worthy enough to stand beside Adrian.
A bitterness spread inside Ella’s heart gradually. She stood there, unresponsive to their words and doubts.
What can you change after all?
No matter how hard you try, in the end, that would amount to nothing.
So, why even bother trying?
Why bother trying to change their hearts?
Why bother trying to win them over?
Why bother with anything at all?
There was an undeniable coldness that claimed Ella’s heart and for a moment, her expressive and bright eyes had a trace of indifference and frost.
Right at this moment, a broad back covered Ella’s view.
A cold and huge palm enveloped over her own, covering it in warmth.
The trance broke and Ella’s eyes returned to normal. She glanced at Adrian’s back in a reverie.
’Thump’
’Thump’
’Thump’
Love... What was it to her?
Him.
Him. Him. Him.
Ella closed her eyes and inhaled a deep breath.
When she opened her eyes again, they were bright and sparkly, just like usual.
"What do you mean by that, Adrian?" Old Master King rose to his feet, "You are shielding her as if your grandmother is bullying her. Do you have no regard for your elders?"
Adrian’s eyes narrowed. His mouth moved but before he could utter a word, he felt a pinch on his palm.
It was barely felt, like the gentle scratch of a kitten.
When he tilted his head to the side, the girl freed her hand from his grasp and stepped forward to stand in front of his grandparents.
"Grandpa... Grandma... Actually, Adrian and I did not tell you something just now..."
The old couple exchanged a brief glance.
Lilith’s eyes narrowed, "Miss Yu, are you going to deny what happened? Are you saying that the Old Madam and Old Master have judged the situation wrongly?"
A strange silence settled over the living room. Everyone knew how complicated the situation had become just with that one statement.
If Ella said anything other than what the old couple believed in, and if her words turned out to be the truth then the old couple would be humiliated for judging the situation wrongly.
If she did not do it, then she would be admitting that the entire thing was her fault.
But with that, what would she say now?
Lilith smiled as she looked at Ella, not losing the slightest of her poise.
Ella on the other hand trembled and clutched onto Adrian’s wrist.
Adrian’s face darkened immediately and he stepped forward to support her.
The old couple saw the situation and stepped forward.
"Ella, what’s wrong with you?" Old Madam King walked over.
Ella meekly escaped Adrian’s clutches and leaned over on Old Madam King.
Adrian looked at his empty hands and then at Ella, his brows tugging together in confusion.
Ella met his gaze and from an angle nobody could see, she winked at him.
Adrian blinked. Once. Twice. And then, he stayed put in his place.
Ella’s eyelashes trembled, "Grandma, I... I almost died earlier... It gave me a bad scare..." her voice was barely above a whisper yet everybody could hear her, loud and clear.
Old Madam King’s heart softened seeing the girl who seemed so weak and delicate.
She was a part of the King Family. Even her own grandchildren rarely showed their vulnerable sides to her.
But Ella on the other hand was different from them. Just a normal girl, still not used to their ways.
As Old Madam King supported the girl’s hand, she frowned, "Girl... I still remember how healthy you were when you first met me. Since when did you become so sick and bony?"
"Grandma, it doesn’t matter really. I am fine," As she spoke, her wrist hung weakly in Old Madam King’s grip.
Ella looked over from the Old Lady’s shoulders, and glanced at Old Master King with teary eyes, "Grandpa, sorry to let you down too. I am just weak. In the future, I will do better..."
Lilith’s eyes narrowed, "Miss Yu, you..."
"Girl, it’s not like we are blaming you," Old Master King said with a helpless sigh.
"That’s right," Old Madam King nodded.
Lilith’s voice was drowned in their immediate responses.
Ella ’weakly’ pulled back from Old Madam King’s embrace and leaned ’delicately’ onto Adrian’s arm with a very understanding look that said—I don’t want to crush Grandma.
Adrian immediately wrapped an arm around her waist, supporting her properly.
Ella smiled at them, "Grandma, can you bring over the person who was helping me out with the horse?"
Lilith’s eyes shifted slightly when she heard Ella’s request.
She immediately gazed across the old couple before looking at Ella, "Miss Yu, do you still think that the Old Master, Old Madam and the rest of us have misjudged the situation?"
"Of course not, how could that be? It’s true. I was the one who triggered the horse. My brash actions led to the situation over there," Ella said softly.
’Silence’
Nobody expected Ella to utter such words, directly admitting her fault.
And for a moment, there was only silence in the place.
Until Ella opened her mouth again, "But... I have some doubts and I want the horse trainer to help me with them..."
Lilith was about to speak when Ella turned to Old Madam King, her little face turning downcast as she let out a series of weak coughs, "Grandma... can I not request that?"
"Of course, you can," Old Madam King immediately nodded and looked over the old Butler.
Soon, the horse trainer walked into the grand living room.
The moment he spotted Ella, he dropped to his knees with a ’thump’.
Ella’s eyes narrowed subtly.
"Miss Yu, Miss Yu, please forgive me!" The man cried like he had sinned, "I shouldn’t have let you ride alone no matter how much you insisted. I should have stopped you despite being a mere servant. It was my fault for not being stubborn enough and stopping you..."
An awkward air settled over the entire place.
Basically, in the matter of a few words, the man declared Ella a complete nutcase.
His words were more along the line of: Ella cockily treated him like a mere servant and did not pay heed to his words. And she also was hopelessly stubborn.
Ella’s eyes met Lilith who simply arched a brow in response.
Well... Well... Such a nice play, all just arranged for her?
Ella’s lips curved up in the kindest smile ever as she slowly approached the horse trainer on unsteady feet.
Drops of tears rolled down her eyes, "Please... Please don’t kneel in front of me. You are probably a few years older than me, this makes me uncomfortable!"
As she spoke, she even helped him up by his shoulders, "Please..."
The man was stunned.
Ella’s words basically translated to: I respect people, I respect my elders even more. How can I ever mistreat you?
"You told no lie at all. It was indeed my brash action of riding the horse alone that the situation turned out to be like that."
The horse trainer was summoned there just then so he hadn’t heard her previous confession.
Hearing her admit to the wrongdoings that she never committed, his eyes widened in disbelief. And his face showed a hint of bewilderment.
As if... something went off with how things were written in the script.
However, Ella was not done there, "But... But I am confused about one thing."
The man was on the edge and he looked at her cautiously at this moment, "W-What?"
"You told me to tug the reins more harshly so I can command the horse. That is why I was so daring to try it by myself because I thought I learnt the secret and it would undoubtedly help me..."
Ella mumbled, sounding half innocent and half confused, "But why did the horse bolt forward crazily when I actually did that?"
The moment Ella said that, everyone’s expression changed drastically.
