Chapter 52 - A Date with Danger

Wang Li wasn't sure what was worse—being summoned by the Sect Master for mysterious reasons or being ambushed by Mu Qingling the moment he stepped out of the inner court.

"Alright, spill." She crossed her arms, eyes gleaming with curiosity. "What did the old man say?"

Wang Li sighed. "Something about a trial and a coming threat."

Mu Qingling's lips curled into a smirk. "Ooooh, a trial? Sounds like the perfect chance for you to show off. Let me guess—you're going to do something reckless and make every girl in the sect swoon again?"

Wang Li groaned. "You say that like it's my fault."

Mu Qingling leaned closer, her playful grin widening. "Oh? So you're saying you're not aware of how all the junior disciples whisper about you? Or how Lan Yue's been watching you a little too closely? Or how Lin Ruoyan always seems to 'accidentally' run into you?"

Wang Li felt a headache coming on. "Can we focus on something important? Like, say, the giant looming catastrophe?"

Mu Qingling waved him off. "You stress too much. In times of crisis, it's important to relax." She suddenly grabbed his wrist. "Speaking of which, I've decided you're taking me on a date."

Wang Li nearly choked. "A what?!"

"You heard me." She winked. "Before you get dragged into another deadly encounter, you owe me a proper outing."

Wang Li blinked. "Why do I owe you?"

Mu Qingling grinned. "Because I got you that fancy dagger from the Treasure Pavilion. And because I said so."

Before he could protest, she dragged him down the sect's winding paths toward a secluded lake hidden within a bamboo forest. It was one of the few places disciples could relax without constantly training.

The setting sun cast golden light over the water, and the air was thick with the scent of blooming lotuses. Wang Li had to admit—it was peaceful.

Mu Qingling sat on a rock, kicking off her boots and dipping her feet into the cool water. "See? Nice, right?"

Wang Li sat beside her, still a little wary. "So... this is a date?"

She laughed. "Don't sound so scared! It's just a little fun. We can spar later if you really need to feel productive."

He shook his head, amused despite himself. "You're impossible."

She smirked. "And yet, you're still here."

They sat in comfortable silence for a while, watching the ripples dance across the lake. For once, there was no urgent battle to fight, no sect politics to navigate. Just the two of them, a quiet moment stolen from the chaos.

But Wang Li knew better than to believe peace would last forever.

Especially when Lin Ruoyan suddenly appeared, arms crossed, staring at them with narrowed eyes.

"Well, well. What do we have here?" she drawled.

Mu Qingling grinned. "Oh, just a little bonding time. Want to join?"

Lin Ruoyan scoffed. "Please. Like I'd let you steal all of Wang Li's attention."

Wang Li groaned. Here we go again.

Lin Ruoyan stood at the edge of the lake, her arms crossed, her fiery red hair catching the last rays of sunlight. There was a sharp glint in her eyes—not quite anger, but certainly amusement mixed with challenge.

"You two seem to be having a good time." Her tone was light, but Wang Li could sense the underlying mischief.

Mu Qingling smirked. "Jealous, Ruoyan? You know, if you wanted some alone time with Wang Li, all you had to do was ask."

Lin Ruoyan scoffed. "As if. I just didn't expect you to be the type to get all cozy by a lake."

Wang Li sighed, rubbing his temples. "Please don't turn this into some kind of competition."

Lin Ruoyan ignored him, stepping closer. "Since we're all here, how about a little wager?"

Mu Qingling raised an eyebrow. "Oh? What kind of wager?"

Lin Ruoyan smirked. "A spar. One round, right here, right now. If I win, I get to take Wang Li on a date tomorrow."

Wang Li nearly fell off the rock. "Wait, why am I the prize?!"

Mu Qingling burst out laughing. "Oh, I like this. But let's raise the stakes. If I win, you have to admit that I'm better at swordplay than you."

Lin Ruoyan narrowed her eyes. "Fine. And if Wang Li wins?"

Both girls turned to him expectantly.

He sighed. "If I win, you both owe me a favor. No questions asked."

Mu Qingling's grin widened. "I like it. But don't think we'll go easy on you."

Lin Ruoyan cracked her knuckles. "I wasn't planning to."

Within minutes, the peaceful lakeside had transformed into a makeshift battlefield. The air buzzed with spiritual energy as Mu Qingling and Lin Ruoyan took their stances, their auras flaring with excitement.

Wang Li stood between them, rolling his shoulders. "Alright, no holding back?"

Mu Qingling winked. "Oh, I plan to make you sweat."

Lin Ruoyan smirked. "You won't last five moves."

Wang Li exhaled. Here we go.

The moment the match started, Lin Ruoyan lunged forward, her movements like flowing fire, while Mu Qingling circled from the side, her strikes sharp and precise.

Wang Li barely had time to dodge as a gust of wind from Mu Qingling's sword sent ripples across the lake. He twisted his body, narrowly avoiding Lin Ruoyan's flaming fist.

They're serious!

He parried Mu Qingling's strike with his dagger, using the momentum to flip backward. But before he could recover, Lin Ruoyan was already closing in, her palm glowing with condensed qi.

Thinking fast, Wang Li stepped onto the surface of the lake, channeling his spiritual energy to stand atop the water.

Mu Qingling laughed. "Oh, fancy tricks now?"

Lin Ruoyan smirked. "Let's see how long you last."

She stepped forward—and suddenly, Wang Li moved.

With a burst of speed, he feinted toward Mu Qingling before pivoting toward Lin Ruoyan, his dagger grazing her sleeve. Before she could counter, he twisted midair, deflecting Mu Qingling's sword with the flat of his blade.

Both girls staggered back.

Wang Li exhaled, grinning. "That's one move."

Mu Qingling huffed. "Alright, now I'm serious."

Lin Ruoyan's eyes gleamed. "Same here."

As the duel raged on, laughter and battle cries echoed over the water. It wasn't just a fight—it was fun, a moment of reckless joy between three people caught in the chaos of cultivation.

And for once, Wang Li didn't mind being the prize.
