Chapter 45 - The Celestial Serpent’s Tomb—A Gamble with Fate

Wang Li regretted his decision almost immediately.

The moment he agreed to Lan Yue's plan, she whisked him away under the cover of night, dragging him to the sect's teleportation array. No time to rest, no time to process—just straight into another dangerous adventure.

"You could've at least let me pack," Wang Li muttered as they stood within the array's glowing runes.

Lan Yue smirked. "What do you need to pack? Your sense of humor? Don't worry, I brought everything we need."

"That's what I'm afraid of," he grumbled.

Before he could complain further, the array activated. A surge of energy swallowed them, and the world twisted.

When they landed, Wang Li's stomach lurched. He barely had time to steady himself before the sight before him stole his breath.

The Celestial Serpent's Tomb.

A vast ruin sprawled before them, bathed in eerie silver moonlight. Jagged obsidian pillars jutted out from the ground like the fangs of a buried beast. Mist coiled around ancient stone pathways, whispering secrets long forgotten.

In the distance, a colossal serpent skeleton lay half-buried in the earth, its ivory bones gleaming ominously. The skull alone was the size of a small house, its empty eye sockets staring into oblivion.

Wang Li gulped. "You sure we're in the right place?"

Lan Yue strode forward confidently. "Oh, absolutely. If we weren't, we'd already be dead."

"...Comforting," he muttered.

As they ventured deeper, the air grew colder, thick with spiritual energy. Strange glyphs glowed faintly on the walls, their meanings lost to time.

"So," Wang Li said, trying to ignore the creeping sensation of being watched, "how exactly do we find the key?"

Lan Yue pulled out a small jade compass, its needle spinning wildly. "According to this, the key is somewhere near the serpent's heart."

Wang Li squinted. "You mean inside that thing?"

"Obviously," she said with a grin.

"Fantastic. You know, I love breaking into ancient cursed tombs. Great hobby."

"Less complaining, more moving," she chided.

As they approached the massive skeleton, the ground suddenly shifted.

Wang Li barely had time to react before a thick chain shot out from the ground, wrapping around his ankle.

"Trap—!"

The moment he shouted, the ground beneath them cracked open, revealing an abyss lined with sharp, jagged stones. The earth gave way, and they plummeted.

Wang Li hit the ground hard, the impact knocking the breath out of him. He groaned, rolling onto his back.

"Ow."

A second later, Lan Yue landed gracefully beside him, barely winded.

"You okay?" she asked.

"Define 'okay'." He sat up, rubbing his bruised ribs. "Where are we?"

A quick glance told him they'd fallen into an underground chamber. Bioluminescent fungi clung to the walls, casting an eerie blue glow. Strange murals adorned the stone, depicting serpentine figures bowing before a celestial deity.

And at the center of the room...

A stone pedestal.

And on that pedestal, floating above a silver array, was a single black jade key.

Wang Li exhaled. "Found it."

Lan Yue's eyes sparkled. "That was fast."

"Too fast," he muttered. "Which means—"

The moment he stepped forward, the chamber rumbled.

A deep hiss echoed through the air.

From the shadows, a massive spectral serpent slithered into view, its translucent form flickering like ghostly flames. Its eyes glowed an eerie green, filled with ancient malice.

Lan Yue sighed. "And there it is."

The spectral serpent coiled around the room, its massive fangs gleaming.

"Intruders..." a deep voice rumbled. "You dare desecrate my tomb?"

Wang Li raised his hands. "In our defense, we didn't mean to fall in here."

The serpent's tail lashed out. Wang Li barely dodged, rolling to the side.

"Negotiation failed," he muttered. "Plan B?"

Lan Yue drew her sword. "Simple. We kill it."

Wang Li groaned. "Of course you'd say that."

The serpent lunged.

And the fight began.
