Chapter 40: A punishment to kneel

The grand gates of the royal palace came into view as Amelia returned from University.

For some reason, she felt like a heavy, sadistic aura looked over the place.

Even her driver, Uncle Harrison, had been looking at her from the rearview mirror as if he knew something was about to happen, but when she asked him who he was, he went silent.

Amelia bit her lips, taking a deep breath, ready to face whatever. She looked out of the window at the setting sun, which captured her gaze for some time before she remembered once hearing a mother telling her son that one shouldn’t look at the setting sun but the rising sun.

It was a hoax, obviously, but for once she wanted to believe it.

The car stopped before the staircase of the doors of the royal palace, and Amelia stepped out.

She immediately felt the looming, dangerous aura thick enough to be cut with a knife.

Her gaze shifted to the last stair near the door, and there he was, King Cyrus Valentino.

His gaze was dark, cold, unapproachable, holding a strange, viciousness as he looked at her today.

Amelia was about to ascend the stairs when Cyrus’s cold voice stopped her.

"Stop right there," He said.

She paused in her tracks. There was a hint of anger in his voice that seemed to simmer in her skin like magma full of hatred and something she couldn’t pinpoint.

Her gaze shifted to Miss Quinn, Fabian, and Trevor, who stood beside him and looked at her with concerned faces.

"Kneel," Cyrus’s Valentino’s words were loud and clear, and needed no repetition.

For a moment, Amelia was confused. She didn’t know what sin she committed.

"Sir, is it really necessary? At least hear her out," Miss Quinn vouched for their princess, and Fabian and Trevor stepped ahead in her defense.

"Miss Quinn is right, sir. At least learn about the circumstances," Fabian said.

They talked about her, vouching for her or blaming her, but Amelia felt like a spectator in her life who didn’t know what was going on. 𝗳𝚛𝚎𝚎𝘄𝕖𝕓𝕟𝕠𝚟𝚎𝕝.𝗰𝕠𝐦

"There is no need for any reason. I warned her about severe punishment if I saw her near her lover. Imagine being informed that my wife is in the arms of another man by my rival," Cyrus said.

Amelia’s memories immediately took her back to when that mysterious man held her hand from behind to stop her from rubbing it, and she sighed.

King Cyrus said she was seen with her lover boy. It meant he was talking about when Alpha Killian held her hand and almost hugged her from behind.

However, it was true that she sinned with that mysterious man who appeared out of nowhere, around whom her body had grown a mind of its own.

And thus, without reasoning, she smiled before nodding.

"Your majesty, this is not necessary. Please listen to her," Fabian said when he saw the Princess agreeing.

"It wasn’t what it looked like. But for now, I have nothing to prove my loyalty to you. I’ll take this punishment," Amelia took a deep breath.

"Your orders are my destiny," She said before she got on her knees.

Everyone gasped, but no one dared to say anything.

"She’s a princess now, sir. Such punishment will disgrace the royalty and the palace. Your grandfather won’t bear it," Miss Quinn interrupted again, but one cold look from Cyrus was enough to shut her.

Trevor, usually the quietest, pressed his lips into a thin line.

"She returned from the hospital recently, sir. Let’s take it inside," he said.

Cyrus smirked. He just kept looking at the girl before him.

"This is how you healers operate, don’t you? By turning my people against me," He said to Amelia before turning to his people.

"I don’t remember the time I gave you the freedom to question my authority," He said.

The statement alone was enough for everyone to lower their heads.

Cyrus looked at the girl who said nothing and kneeled with her hands placed before her.

She didn’t plead or cry, not even for the chance at forgiveness or an opportunity to explain herself.

She just stated that what he said was wrong, but the lack of evidence was the reason she was doing it.

Her back was straight, like a warrior, and Cyrus took a deep breath before turning around and walking inside the palace.

"Not a single drop of water, food, or any facilities shall be offered to her. Anyone who dared to go against me will go against my authority," Cyrus commented and went straight to his office.

Time passed.

He didn’t know how long he had been working on the files of the rogues.

They allowed the rogues who wanted a chance at redemption to attend the same University as those alphas, just with a different building, but for some reason, these days, the attacks were increasing.

He wondered if he should have someone do a thorough check on the rogues studying at the University, but his grandfather was against the idea for the time being.

Since the king’s trials had not commenced yet, he had no full authority to check the rogues without the stamp.

Cyrus looked out of the window, the strange weather making him narrow his brows.

Suddenly, his office window opened due to the heavy winds, and he stood to close it.

As he walked to the window, his gaze fell on the kneeling girl on the ground before the palace doors.

The rain had started pouring heavily, and the heavy winds were blowing, but she stayed unmoving on that cold, hard stone.

Her gaze was forward, her back still straight, her hair sticking to her body while her dress did nothing to shield her from the piercing raindrops.

He had been observing her from the moment she stepped out of the car to the moment he punished her.

He had expected her to retaliate, show some resistance, or even defiance. But she showed nothing. She was silent, unyielding, and resilient.

Water was starting to collect around her, forming a small pool. Her lips were trembling, her body probably shivering from the cold. However, she still didn’t flinch from her position.

Cyrus hated it. He hated that Patrick, who had been helping Dominic with Forest security after the incident, captured Alpha Killian touching Amelia, stopping her, and her body touching his.

He hated it that Patrick got a chance to say he was probably being cuckolded in broad daylight and that he should expect his wife to run away from him again.

Besides, how could he forget that Amelia’s first instinct and plan after marrying him was to run away?

It was still unclear to him why she changed her mind when her sister had already made all the preparations, but he hated that she had become the reason for his rival’s making fun of him.

He wanted to tell Patrick that nothing was going on between them and that Alpha Killian was a friend worried about her, but the nation knew about her love for Alpha Killian to the point of obsession and possession.

The mere fact that she got a chance to be with that lover boy, even for a second, made him fill with hatred towards Alpha Killian.

He knew she wasn’t at fault, but why could she not resist him? Did she still love him?

Cyrus clenched his fists.

He hated the healers, but what he hated the most was how resilient Amelia looked. Even drenched from rain and shivering from cold, her unmoving, proud form looked nothing less than a queen bound by chains.

She wasn’t moving, but she could still move something inside him.

She wasn’t flinching, but something inside him was flinching.

She was unyielding, but something inside him was yielding, and he hated all of it.

She wasn’t supposed to matter. He married her to restore the peace for the time being, so he could attack the healers once he became the king, yet this girl...

With his jaws squared and his fists clenched, he walked to the intercom and pressed the button.

"Bring her inside," He gave the orders.

Fabian, who was busy sorting the documents and heard the announcement, didn’t waste a second and jumped from the window of the first floor to rush outside, followed by Trevor.

They lifted her quickly, wrapping her in a blanket as she looked barely conscious. Her body shivered as they held her, and Cyrus, who saw his people getting soft for this mere healer, looked away, his gaze still dark.
