Chapter 20: The man with the scythe

Amelia closed her eyes and took a deep breath.

She tried her best to navigate things better this time, but changing things around her to prevent herself from being tricked again came with a price.

Or why would an event that was supposed to occur after around five months happen now?

"Do you think closing your eyes will make the reality disappear from before you?" The man asked.

"Do you think we will spare you? We are here to help you see the truth, and we will go only after you see that," The man said.

His words confused Amelia.

What did he say? To help her see the truth? What kind of truth were they talking about?

"What–" she opened her mouth to ask them what they were talking about when the man drew his blade again, and Amelia’s pupils dilated before she jumped backward to dodge.

Though she was swift, her techniques were comparatively blunt, and the blade sliced her hand.

She winced in pain, holding the wound as it started oozing blood.

"Do you see it now?" The man asked and neared her before grabbing her neck into a chokehold.

He tilted his head, his amber eyes boring into hers, almost turning bluish.

Amelia’s eyes widened.

This wasn’t just a werewolf. There was no way a wolf’s eyes were supposed to turn blue.

And what kind of truth was he talking about?

"Do you see it?" The man asked before smiling creepily.

Without thinking twice, Amelia raised her hand and sliced the throat of the man who was choking her.

The man stumbled back, blood splurging from his wound, and the other six men immediately stood alert when he saw the man falling on the ground.

Amelia could sense something was wrong with this attack. This wasn’t a similar attack that happened after five months. Though he was the same leader who had led the attack last time, his eyes...

At some distance, Aaron narrowed his brows.

"What the hell? What are they doing? I didn’t ask them to go so overboard. Is that a real sword they are using?" Aaron asked.

"For a healer, she is countering good," Derrick said.

Ryan, who was the least bothered by the fight, just rolled his eyes, but what Aaron said next made him freeze in his place.

"He sliced her hand," Aaron said.

Ryan immediately closed his phone and turned around.

He used his binoculars, his gaze turning dark immediately.

"That’s a real sword! Have you guys lost it?!" Ryan growled at his brothers. He was about to tell them to stop whatever this nonsense plan was when he saw Aaron’s phone ringing.

Aaron picked up the call.

"What is it?" He asked.

"Sir, it’s me. I am sorry we couldn’t come to complete your task," the man on the other side said.

"You couldn’t come? What do you mean by that?" Aaron asked, his heart beating against his chest as he looked at his brothers with similar expressions.

"Sir, we were coming to the forest to pretend to attack the girl when we felt someone sneaking on us out of the blue. Someone hit our head and made us smell something. We just gained consciousness, and I thought of informing you first," the man said.

The three Alpha’s stood there in utter shock when they saw Amelia slicing the neck of one of the men.

The realization dawned upon them.

This was an actual attack and not a planned one. And it meant Amelia’s life was in danger for real.

"What are you waiting for? We are alphas!" Derrick growled when they saw Amelia barely holding up and having multiple wounds on her body.

They were about to turn into their wolf form when, out of the blue, they saw a man with a scythe move toward Amelia.

He came like a whirlwind and stood tall before Amelia when she fell on the ground, his scythe looking like a grim reaper’s final call for the assassins.

He wore a black hoodie covering his face, his familiar scent catching Amelia off-guard a little.

Her fast heartbeats and blood dropping in her eyes made it hard for her to see anything.

"I’ll protect you,"

These were the only words the man said before he started fighting.

He moved his scythe like a hell’s hunter, his speed like nothing Amelia had ever seen. It was even hard to keep up with his pace as he moved.

’Do you think I will let you die so easily after all the efforts I put into you?’ A voice echoed in her head, and Amelia looked around, frightened.

Someone was still following her.

Seeing the man-slaughter of all the spies, Amelia felt a weird fear settle in her heart. Was this the same person responsible for the voice in her head, too?

Didn’t she see a man with a creepy smile earlier? What if he was the same man?

Dread started to spread in the body, making her fingers tremble with anxiety.

She stood with great effort before stumbling back as she tried to run away from the man and towards society.

However, she had run for only a few meters when she felt something cold press against her abdomen, causing her to freeze in place.

Amelia looked down at the blade of the scythe around her abdomen before she was pulled back, and her back hit something hard.

"Don’t run from me, Princess," the man said, his familiar voice making her heart skip a beat. The spark her body felt again made it impossible for her to move.

"T-thank you," She whispered, tears welling in her eyes, and the man chuckled.

He snuck his hand around her abdomen, not allowing her to turn as he leaned towards her ears, making her heart beat fast for a different reason this time.

"I didn’t do it to get a ’thank you’. I did it because..." The man took a deep breath before kissing her neck softly.

"You are mine, Princess. The moment you placed your hand on my body, you were mine," He said before nipping at her ears.

A shiver traveled down Amelia’s body, and she was about to turn around to see who it was because she was sure she felt his presence in the University too, but when she turned around, there was no one.

She was standing alone, and everything almost felt like a dream, like a scene from her last life. The only difference was that no one came to save her in her previous life.

The pounding of her heart, the thick scent of blood, and her wounds was clear indication that what she felt and saw was real.

Amelia couldn’t move for a few seconds, and she kneeled on the ground, the stark reality that she was this close to death today hitting her straight.

She closed her eyes, tears rolling down her cheeks. The sound of people walking towards her caught her attention, and she opened her eyes, her gaze meeting with the three troublemaker alphas.

They looked at her like they were looking at some alien, and she sighed.

Amelia placed her hand on her knees before standing, almost stumbling with her next step.

Aaron rushed forward to help her, but Amelia raised her hand to stop him mid-way.

"Please don’t tell anyone about this," Amelia said before walking towards the University exit.

"Hey, we...uh... we wanted to apologize to you. This... this was our plan," Aaron rushed behind her.

Amelia stopped for a second.

She knew she was gaining attention at University, which would backfire on her sooner or later. But she didn’t expect anyone to retaliate on her first day.

Then again, those in power or who want to be in power never cease to take a chance to show their opponents their place because they think only they are allowed to breathe and live with their heads held high.

The thought alone made Amelia scoff because, given Hannah’s reputation, she knew she must be thinking of something, too.

"It wasn’t you," Amelia said, not wanting to extend the matter.

"Hmm?" Aaron asked, confused.

Amelia looked at the three brothers briefly.

"These assassins weren’t yours. You don’t have that kind of spy in your pack. Besides, as hateful as you guys are, you won’t want to jeopardize the reputation of your pack just wanting to eliminate a healer," Amelia said before she looked at Aaron.

"There was a reason I hated you," Amelia said.

The three brothers stood rooted in their places.

Aaron wanted to retaliate and ask her why she hated him so much when he didn’t even remember crossing her, but after what he did, he didn’t know if he deserved to say that.

He looked at the trail of blood that Amelia was leaving and couldn’t help but press his lips into a thin line.

As Amelia was walking towards the exit of the pack, Alpha Killian, who had come out for a smoke in the last lecture because he couldn’t get Amelia out of his head, smelt blood, and turned to his left.

To say he was surprised by the sight would be an understatement.

"Amelia?" He asked, horrified.

Amelia looked at him briefly before signaling for a taxi.

Alpha Killian wanted to run towards the taxi, but she sat quickly, and the cab left.

He rushed to get his car and followed the taxi when he saw the alphas of Ashborn pack coming from the same direction, and his gaze darkened.

Did they bully her?
