Chapter 129: Molten venom

"Out of all people, I didn’t peg you to be the crying type,"

Someone’s words brought Amelia out of her thoughts, and she wiped her tears quickly, sobering her expression before she stood and dusted her clothes, facing the person who walked inside the laboratory.

"What do you want?" Amelia asked, her voice sharp, almost cutting.

Realising her mistake, she cleared her throat.

"I mean, what are you doing here?" She asked, reforming her question.

The man looked at her with a smirk before walking to her.

"Would it sound awkward if I say I am trying to figure you out?" he asked.

Amelia glared at the man.

What was with him suddenly acting like this? She was sure she had never crossed him or done anything suspicious before him.

"Don’t disturb me if you are here for some fun," Amelia spat the last word.

She didn’t know why she was feeling so irritated. It was almost as if her energies, which had been tolerant of people around her earlier, were running thin, and now she didn’t want to entertain anyone who was disturbing her peace.

"I am just kidding. It was Ethan who asked me to deliver a message to you," Cameron said.

His words made Amelia raise her brows.

The council head’s son? What did he want from her?

"He said he wanted to have a chat with you. Since the entire council would be here to see the King trials, he would wait for the invitation," Cameron said.

Amelia continued her work, forcing herself to focus on the experiment and not on the things around her.

Ethan wanted to talk to her, but about what?

Remembering the last time how he defended the council and Hannah and even stood by her father against her decision about the land, she didn’t think they had a good encounter.

He had indeed mentioned that he would verify the authenticity of the papers published under Hannah’s name earlier.

Could it be something related to it?

Amelia wondered and was about to turn when her mark suddenly burned.

Her eyes glowed for a fleeting second, and she turned to her right in instinct, where the window was.

"Watch out!" Amelia rushed forward, using a speed she didn’t know she was capable of before today as she pushed Cameron out of the way.

The duo landed on the ground with a thud that was followed by the shattering sound of the window that pierced Amelia’s skin as she had jumped on Cameron to save him.

"Damn!" Amelia winced in pain.

"Hey, are you okay?" Cameron tried to stand to help her see how badly she had been hurt.

He was a student council leader, not to mention the cousin of the council head’s son. How could he let a girl get hurt to save him? The thought made his brows furrow as he cursed under his breath.

It was a mistake. He had let his guard down.

But how the hell did Amelia sense it? And that speed at which she came to him...was that even supposed to be normal for a healer?

Cameron was about to help Amelia up when, to his surprise, rather than staying put and treating her wounds like any sane healer would do with no supernatural powers, Amelia rushed out of the laboratory.

The man’s pupils dilated.

He rushed out behind her, but the girl was nowhere to be seen.

It was almost as if she vanished into thin air.

"Where did she go?" Cameron murmured.

The sound of the window breaking had caught the attention of the people on the lower floors, and they rushed to see what had happened.

Cameron pushed past all of them when he saw a trail of blood, hinting at where Amelia might’ve gone.

Amelia, who didn’t know what had poisoned her mind and why the hell she was running in that direction, gulped, breathing heavily.

It was almost an instinct, like her body knew where to go without her brain needing to tell her anything.

She kept running at a speed that she didn’t recognise until she found a man who was packing his belongings.

A metal bow and a stack of arrows in the box.

The rustling of leaves caught the man’s attention, and he looked up, his pupils dilating when he saw who it was.

"You attacked me," Amelia’s voice came out colder, darker, deeper, more laced with venom than she had intended.

The man froze in his place.

Maybe Amelia couldn’t feel or see it, but he could.

The girl who was supposed to have normal hazel eyes was now glowing with a pair of golden eyes.

"I... I..." the man stammered.

He stood from his place, ready to run, but staggered back, falling back on his butt.

He crawled back from Amelia as she kept stepping forward, her eyes dripping with molten venom.

"You–" The man didn’t know what to say to Amelia.

Amelia looked at her mark, which suddenly started to glow blue, and a laugh left her mouth.

She didn’t want to laugh or smile in this situation. She was facing the man who nearly killed her by attacking her with that metal arrow, which could’ve hurt her seriously.

Then why was she laughing?

Amelia’s brain was confused about how her body was reacting.

"Who asked you to do it?" She asked.

The man gulped.

He shook his head, an indication that he wasn’t going to tell her who his boss was.

Amelia hummed. She tilted her head slowly before sniggering.

"Will your boss save you and your family if anything happens to you?" Amelia asked.

Cameron, who finally reached some distance after following the blood trail, was about to step ahead and confront the attacker when he suddenly felt rooted to his place.

He tried to step ahead, trying to move his foot, but to no avail could he move.

The more he tried to walk ahead, the more strenuous his body felt, like someone was churning him.

His wolf forbade him from moving.

But why?

He looked ahead at the healer girl who was confronting her attacker alone.

He felt bad.

Ethan hadn’t asked him to keep a lookout for her. Rather, his brother was genuinely worried about her. He was worried about her because of something the council head said to him that was still a mystery among other council members.

Cameron opened his mouth to get Amelia’s attention, but no words came out of his mouth.

It was almost as if Amelia and he were in a completely different zone, separated by a barrier that he couldn’t cross.

"You will kill me? Do you think you’ll stay alive just by killing me? There will be many like me who’ll come to kill you, hurt you. You don’t deserve to live," the man said.

Amelia’s brows furrowed.

She thought about his words for some time before nodding.

"And that’s the reason, every person who would come to hurt me will have to die," Amelia said before she clicked her tongue.

"You asked if I’ll kill you. Nope. I won’t do that. I won’t dirty my hands like that, on a scum like you. You are too proud of your work, aren’t you? What did you say? I deserve to die," Amelia pouted her lips before she took one more step towards the man.

"Well, that made me sad," she said before she licked her bottom lip.

She looked at the man, straight in the eyes, before smirking.

"Die. Kill yourself," She said, a silent whisper in the chaotic nature that was followed by a sudden burst of thundering and lightning.

The man, who had been looking at Amelia in a daze, like in a trance of hatred, suddenly grabbed his hand between his hands before twisting it with a jerk.

The lightning in the sky almost blinded Cameron as it fell right before Amelia’s foot, burning the man to ashes within a few seconds.

Everything happened so quickly that until the sound of deafening thunder reached Cameron’s ears, he couldn’t process what exactly had happened.

He looked at the back of the girl, still bleeding from the shards of glass still engraved in her skin, who turned around with a neutral expression, as if someone just didn’t die at her feet.

What the hell was this all about?

In the hidden zones of the Rocky Mountains, the hooded figures who had gathered once again at the mention of their leader watched everything unfold before them, and a ray of hope shone in their eyes.

It was finally happening.

They all looked at the broken rock through the crystal globe and saw it healing once again with beaming eyes.
