The Magma Serpent reared back, lava dripping from its fangs, its very presence warping the air around it. This was not like the others. This thing was on an entirely different level.

Kaden barely had time to brace himself before it struck.

The snake lunged forward, its massive obsidian jaws snapping shut with a thunderous boom that sent shockwaves through the cavern. The heat alone was enough to scorch the air, making it feel like Kaden had stepped into the heart of a sun.

He barely managed to dodge, rolling to the side just as the creature’s fangs embedded into the molten ground. The impact caused a violent explosion of lava, sending fiery projectiles in every direction. Kaden shielded his face, feeling the sting of searing heat against his arms.

This was bad.

The smaller lava serpents had been dangerous, but this? This thing was a walking natural disaster.

Kaden gritted his teeth, already calculating. The snake in front of him had clearly stepped into the D-grade already. The difference between early E-grade and late E-grade was already staggering. A D-grade beast was on a completely different level.

Thanks to his stats, he might be able to withstand an attack or two from this snake but thinking of slaying it in its territory would be a fool’s dream. He did not want to be that fool and pay the price with his death.

This time perhaps fleeing was the best option.

Kaden did not want to take any risks unnecessarily. He spun on his heel, bolting toward the jagged path he’d come from. Every instinct screamed at him—this wasn’t a fight he could win, not here, not now.

The Magma Serpent hissed in fury, its molten form slithering after him with terrifying speed.

The ground shook violently as the beast gave chase, lava bursting from the cracks in the ground with every earth-shattering movement. Kaden’s heart pounded, his breath ragged as he dodged and weaved through the treacherous terrain.

Faster.

His body screamed from the accumulated heat, his muscles aching from exhaustion, but he pushed forward. The rocks and bursting geysers blurred past him, the burning air scorching his lungs. He wasn’t going to die here.

But the serpent wasn’t letting up.

A shadow loomed over him, and Kaden’s eyes widened. Shit—!

The Magma Serpent lunged downward, its massive fangs poised to snap him in half. Kaden threw himself sideways, barely escaping as the snake crashed into the ground, sending lava rocketing into the air like a volcanic eruption.

He hit the ground hard, rolling across the cracked obsidian. The moment he stopped, he sprang back up, adrenaline numbing the pain. He needed to keep running.

A violent tremor nearly knocked him off his feet. He looked back just in time to see the Magma Serpent rear back, fire building in its throat.

Oh, hell no.

The entire area lit up in an instant, turning into a sea of fire as the beast unleashed a torrent of molten flames straight at him.

Kaden reacted on instinct, channeling every ounce of strength into his legs as he launched himself to the side, just as the wave of fire exploded behind him. The world around him consumed by a wall of fire and smoke.

BOOM!

The force of the explosion sent him flying, tumbling through the hissing and seething cracked ground before he slammed into a rock wall.

For a moment, there was nothing but pain. His vision blurred, his ears ringing from the impact. Everything felt heavy. He groaned, trying to move, but his limbs barely responded.

A few seconds passed before his senses started to return. Slowly, he forced himself to his knees, shaking off the disorientation. This was not good. Maybe it was time to become a raven and fly away.

Then it struck him. Wait, why hasn’t that thing burned me yet? It was just a couple of seconds of break but in a fight like this seconds could make all the difference. It was very weird that the snake was not on top of him right now, wanting to devour him alive.

He immediately looked back to see that the beast was nowhere to be found. Kaden quickly climbed onto a near mountain and tried to see what was happening. After he reached a certain height, he got a good vantage point.

He could clearly see the distant landscape beneath him, the rivers of molten lava snaking their way through the jagged terrain, the plumes of fire and smoke rising into the infernal sky. He could also see the huge gaping hole in the ground where he had encountered the snake.

He looked closely and there it was, sloshing around in the magma as if it was taking a leisurely swim.

Kaden narrowed his eyes. Something was fishy. That thing did not chase him and went back to its cave? Something did not add up. He took some time to heal himself and when he was fully recovered, he decided to do something daring.

He dashed out of the volcanic region as if he was leaving the area, only to return the next minute in his raven form.

Most often D-grade beasts like this did not bother with insignificant F-Rank beasts. They did not have a requirement for food or water like the lower ranks did. Their body worked differently. So the chances were this bastard wouldn’t care all that much about a raven flying by.

Kaden soared through the sky in his raven form, the blistering heat making it difficult to stay airborne. Even as a bird, the air currents above the volcano were turbulent, throwing him slightly off course. But he adjusted quickly, his sharp eyes locked on the lava below.

Sure enough, the Magma Serpent was still there, coiled lazily in its molten pool, its massive form barely shifting. It wasn’t hunting him anymore. It wasn’t preparing for another attack.

It was waiting.

And then he saw it, in between its coils, visible occasionally when the magam bubbled, was a familiar egg sac.
